what a nifty little thread with some witty and interesting stories..cheers gentleman. Like some of you, i found the place friendly and warm but with a touch of pripyat about it.
You Could find a Franco Begbie character talking to a Malcolm Rifkind Type at one of the dock pubs.
Ive got some pictures o f the leith/transpotting /glue tour , i'll have to get the mrs to put some of them up.
Ive always though of juice terry lawson looking like nigel in eastenders
in many ways i feel like ive grown up with some of the characters in the book. I'll be camping out to watch this film.
Maribou stork would probably be my favourite. Christ on a bike ive managed to post on LFW without mentioning Emma Thompson..it feels nice.

Leith has changed a lot since the mid 80’s, Ted; lots of property development, but it’s still pretty er, “real” in places. Much nicer than it used to be, but still plenty of social issues in the area and despite the partial gentrification, it’s still the feels like it could handle itself in a ruck. Visitors often don't realise that despite being an overwhelmingly beautiful city, some of Edinburgh is rough as fu ck.
Watching Hibs play at Celtic once, we had a family sitting in front of us — Dad, Grandad and two kids aged about four and six. Before kick-off, they’re sharing out the sandwiches, the Grandad’s testing the kids football knowledge etc. It was lovely. The game started and I asked my mate to try not to swear with kids sat so close. About ten minutes later, the youngest kid says, “Dad, why are they booing (ex-Hibee) Pat McGinlay?”, to which his Dad replied, “Because he’s a fu cking cu nt, son”.
The least obsequious reaction to a request I’ve ever had was at in Glasgow, where I was going to watch Hibs on the Sunday, so went to Thistle v Accies on the Saturday. The pies were absolutely minging, but we were starving, and as we were debating whether to chance another pie, this kid appears walking around the edge of the pitch with a fruit bowl. My mate says, “Look, they’re selling fruit — go on, get us an apple”, I told him there was no way they were going to be selling fruit at a football match in Glasgow, and it must be for the boardroom, but I’d see what I could do. Get to the pie hut and balanced on top of the pie warmer is a small selection of apples and bananas:
Me: “Alright mate, can I have an apple…”
All three of the teenagers behind the counter start howling
Me: “What?”
The person serving me says, “Nothing pal, we were just saying what sort of cu nt eats fruit at the football!”
You don’t get that down at Fulham.
When I visited St Petersburg you weren’t allowed to drink alcohol in public places, but you were allowed to drink beer as the Russians don’t count beer as an alcoholic drink; I think the Scots have a similar blind spot when it comes to the c-word. I’m not sure they even see it as a swear word.

Can't wait for this either . The bit in Trainspotting when Born Slippy kicks in, still puts a massive smile on my face. I must have read most of Irvine Welsh's books about 2 or 3 times some more have to say I've even enjoyed the not quite as good ones. Re read Porno after Skag boys came out and forgot what a good book it is, but Glue is definitely my favourite - to me maybe the best book ever written.
