I totally respect the varied and deep muso knowledge held by everyone on this forum. Therefore I was interested in suggestions you have for tracks where the lyrics tell a story or have a very specific meaning/philosophy.

My 8yr old girl is massively into music, real music, which is great. She hasn't a clue what X Factor or 1D is in fact and I intend to keep it that way! But where she hooks into songs is in the lyrics. She likes stuff that tells a story or has a clear meaning (and obviously the tune needs to be great too). Examples of stuff she likes now...

Rocky Raccoon - The Beatles
Children's Story - Slick Rick
Chuck Es in Love - Rikki Lee Jones
War Pigs - Black Sabbath

Your suggestions could help make a great playlist, thankee sirs!...

When I was a kid 2 Story Songs that really got me were Up the Junction by Squeeze and Godley and Creme's Under your Thumb (freaked me out).

The fact that no one has mentioned Ernie (The fastest Milkman in the West) by Benny Hill yet is a disgrace.

perhaps not for an 8 year old but i heard this one tonight for the first time for many years,

Martin - Tom Robinson band

Just want to tell 'bout Martin
Cause nobody I know's got a brother like him
As kids we could never be parted
The neighbours all knew us as the terible twins
At school some kids where always looks for a fight
And Martin never wanted a fuss
Ol' Big Mouth Brown thought he's push us around
Being three year older than us
So I smash him in the teeth with a cloakroom stool
Got six of the best and suspended from school

But it was worth with a brother like Martin
(Martin)
It was worth it with a brother like him

We used to nick motors for a joy ride
'Till we rammed a Black Mariah in this XJ 6
To give my brother time to get clear
I had to punch a few policemen before I was nicked
Got borstal for taking and driving away
And beating up the boys in blue
But Martin never missed a single visiting day
Hitched from Clapham to Crewe
With all me racing mags and the little bits of news
Smuggling in ciggies and a little bit of booze

No one ever had a brother like Martin
No one ever had a brother like him

Look, people get the wrong impression with Martin
I know he didn't mix much but he's no snob
The weekend I got out of remand home
He got Uncle Ruby to find me this job
And back at my Nan's he'd repainted my room
And bought me a brand new carpet
There was all me old records and books on a shelf
And a secondhand telly from the market
You can get a bit hard when you've been inside
But I hugged the old bastard and I almost cried

Cos no-one ever had a brother like Martin
No-one ever had a brother like him

Great thread. Someone beat me to Strange Fruit.

The Burford Stomp is about the Banbury Mutiny, during the English Civil War.

Thinking about it, pretty much any hip hop or folk track would fit the criteria!

I'm not sure how suitable it is for an 8 year old, but Metallica's 'One' is a great track and video, telling the disturbing story from Johnny Got His Gun.

"Mr Story Teller?"
"Yes?"
"Tell us a story."

The first verse of this uses names of London Underground stations to tell a story.

ATWA stands for Air, Trees, Water, Animals, and was a slogan used by Charles Manson and chums.

The story of how to spend £10

"You wanna buy a high like this with a tenner,
what do you spend it on?
On a drink? Well don't think Dom Perignon
Think Super Tennents, extra strong
But you wake up in a sink and you stink and your tenner's gone.

Spend it on a whole heap of lottery tickets.
A pound each doesn't sound steep,
and what if you win it, innit?
Nothing on the first nine,
a tenner on the tenth,
but where's that got you then,
you're back to square one again.

Spend it on some good weed,
sticky and potent shit,
one minute later you'll be sticking your nose in it,
two minutes later you'll be billing and smoking it,
three minutes later you've got shit all to show for it.

Spend it on running in the club with your fellas
spend a nugget on the way to warm it up with a Stella
You just want to find a live bird a ruffle her feathers
and see how far you can take this shit for under a tenner

Alright,
a pound for the bus fare,
a fiver to get in,
another quid to hang your jacket up inside 'cos your sweating
then it's like "you want a drink girl, 'cos you're looking nice"
She wants a Baileys, you're thinking about a water with ice.

Nah spend it on something that's isn't a silly mistake
think straight, go and buy the Louis Slipperz mixtape
Cos the first one was heavy,
and this is the next batch,
so "Oi, Louis mate, slip us a ten bag".

True Story.

Grand master of the Sabbath, John Fane
Told his coven gathered: "Kill King James"
Wax a figure of his image & wrap it in his clothing
Burn it slowly whist he is sleeping

Feed him with poison, bring the monarchy down
Our sin is rebellion, in black arts crowned

3 covens of 39
In 1591 that night performed a rite
A grand Sabbath with one aim in sight
To destroy the king of England

Create a storm, whilst overseas he sails
To bring his Danish bride to these Isles
They christened a cat in his name;
Threw it in a pond, no shame
A tempest was aroused, who should he blame

Hunt down those Witches, confess or die
Sink or swim, they're guilty - let's hang 'em high

3 covens of 39
In 1591 that night performed a rite
A grand Sabbath with one aim in sight
To destroy the king of England

Witchcraft spreading all around this Christian land
Find them; burn them to the ground
Their souls condemned

Their ill fated curse failed so the king held trial
The first great persecution of the British Isles
An imp sucks a spinster's nipple
A hare drains milk from cattle
A clergy fornicate at a black dog's ball

Pierce flesh with needles three inches in
If they scream they're guilty, guilty as sin

3 covens slaughtered that night
39 crucified, burned and hanged alive
Interrogated at our first witch trials
Sentenced by the king of England

Sure is a great thread.
Someone earlier mentioned a lot of Country music tells stories, well so does Blues. Off the top of my head:-
Walkin' the Blues - Willie Dixon.
One Whiskey, One Bourbon, One Beer - John Lee Hooker and various covers.
I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water - Billy Boy Arnold

Another from the Cab Calloway camp.- San Francisco Fan.

Midnight Rambler- The Rolling Stones

Pam's Moods - Kilburn and the High Roads [ Ian Dury ].

Doesn't Anybody Know my Name - a very moving anti war song [story] from the much forgotten gravelly voiced Canadian crooner, Rod McKuan.

There aint half been some clever bastards.

Great thread.

A lot of my favourites are storytellers. Two spring to mind:-

Tom Waits - 'Ol 55, Martha, Soldier's Things, San Diego Serenade.
Midlake - all story-based.
