I totally respect the varied and deep muso knowledge held by everyone on this forum. Therefore I was interested in suggestions you have for tracks where the lyrics tell a story or have a very specific meaning/philosophy.

My 8yr old girl is massively into music, real music, which is great. She hasn't a clue what X Factor or 1D is in fact and I intend to keep it that way! But where she hooks into songs is in the lyrics. She likes stuff that tells a story or has a clear meaning (and obviously the tune needs to be great too). Examples of stuff she likes now...

Rocky Raccoon - The Beatles
Children's Story - Slick Rick
Chuck Es in Love - Rikki Lee Jones
War Pigs - Black Sabbath

Your suggestions could help make a great playlist, thankee sirs!...

anything by Dylan, Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker (sex theme throughout mind you) and the best lyricist imho Morrissey.

In fact edingburgh university listed him as the only non poet lyricist to make their top 50 wordspeople (poets etc)

Trinity College Dublin recently granted them their arts award too.

All of those guys write real meaning lyrics.

Jack of Hearts by Bob Dylan was the first one that sprung into my head. Sounds like you've got a rather cerebral kid there mate. I actually find a lot of the longer story songs hard to concentrate on for a longer period of time.

For a shorter story perhaps I might suggest Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville in which the protagonist's dawning realisation of his role in his own downfall is delivered with a deliciously measured intensity.

"Tupelo Blues" by John Lee Hooker. RIP August 22, 1917 — June 21, 2001

Did ya read about the flood?
Happened long time ago
In Tupelo, Mississippi
There were thousands o' lives
Destroyed

It rained, it rained
Both night and day
The poor people was worried
Didn't have no place to go

Could hear many people, cryin' "Lord, have mercy"
'Cause You're the only one that we can turn to"

Happened a long time ago
A little town
Way back in Mississippi
In Tupelo

There was women, and there was children
They were screamin' an' cryin'
Cryin', "Lord, have mercy
You're the only one now, that we can turn to"

Way back down in Mississippi, a little country town
I know ya read about it
'Cause I'll never forget it
The mighty flood in Tupelo, Mississippi
Been years ago

Lord, have mercy
Wasn't that a mighty time?
Tupelo's gone

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

I agree! i'm dead certain the Jack of Hearts is a great story, but i can never quite work out what it is

Great stuff. We should use this for a Friday Music thread.

A little bit hard to avoid things young girls shouldn't be listening to, but here goes...

Dionne Warwick - Message to Michael (or almost anything else by Bacharach)
Gladys Knight & The Pips - Midnight Train to Georgia
Gordon Lightfoot - Affair on 8th Avenue
Gordon Lightfoot - The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Gene Pitney - 24 Hours from Tulsa
The Beatles - Norwegian Wood
The Beatles - Yesterday
Tarkio — Goodbye Girl
Eagles - Hotel California
The Seekers - Georgy Girl
Simon & Garfunkel - Homeward Bound

May be too difficult/sad?
Van Morrison - Madame George (fascinating lyrics, a mass of images, but by no means a specific meaning)
Don Maclean - American Pie, Vincent

Too young?
Peter, Paul & Mary - Puff The Magic Dragon

Leader of the Pack - Shangri-Las
Tell Laura I Love Her - Ricky Valance
The Browns - Three Bells
Nineteen - Paul Hardcastle
Camouflage - Stan Ridgway
mmm - Crash Test Dummies
Susan's House - Eels

Mostly cheesy efforts (actually now I look at them there is a lot of death and destruction in those songs but the first two I liked when I was about 8 or so)
