We've let in 11 goals and don't seem to be halting this any time soon. We have no full backs (injured, sold, etc) yet a couple of decent wingback specialists - albeit looking sh.te as they are playing as full backs. We have a handful of good centre halves who could make up the third centre half to help Rio's ageing legs. Barton and Much out for a couple of games with hamstrings? Time to revert to plan A?? At least til Jamuary??
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

i like the 3 at the back system but it requires real hard work in training and on the pitch and sadly in the two games we used it in we didn't look like we had a clue how to play it without the ball

At this minute, I'd go with 4-2-3-1 with the following personnel:
Green Isla Onouha Caulker Yun/Traore Sandro Henry Phillips Fer Kranjcar Austin
Subs McCarthy Rio Yun/Traore Barton Mutch Hoilett Zamora Vargas
Clearly not all those will be fit, hence the 8 subs...
If Sandro is injured, play Barton. Henry deserves to start after his last two showings. If Barton is injured too, you can play Mutch. Mutch is also cover for Fer. Hoilett is cover for Kranjcar. Vargas for Austin or Phillips. You have options. It's a shape the players know well and we need to play with some holding midfielders given out apparent lack of fitness and disinclination of the midfield to track back.
It's not our best 11 but it's our best team, IMO, at this moment in time. I would expect Barton to displace Henry, but you have to create a culture of meritocracy on the squad, otherwise it all goes to sh*t.

Looks a good line up but I don't think Sandro will be fit to start, so how about Ferdinand and Henry as our holding midfielders?

Think 3 at the back makes sense for the personnel available and would hopefully make us more solid. We aren't blessed with goals so really need to keep it tight.
In that formation the only issue is not using Philipps and Hoilett as much. I'd go with: Green Isla Ned Rio Caulker Traore Fer Henry Nico Vargas Charlie
From there you can introduce Hoilett and Philipps from the bench who will cause problems with their pace and power. Vargas gives an outball into the channels which we may well need and with Fer as Nico there are two midfielders who are very comfortable on the ball which is important away from home.

I would try a return to the wingback formation.
With our list of walking wounded I would play the team that you suggest.
The key ASSUMPTION here is that the team have been coached and trained by Hoddle on the formation for the last couple of week!

Can't help thinking fitness and workrate override formation right now. Someone at Burnley was recently quoted as saying they treated each match like their last. And results last weekend showed 3 teams likely to be in the mix with us didn't give a jiff about the opposition or their reputations. Whereas, our starting mentality appears to be one of writing off games against certain opposition before we start. I just want to see Rangers have a good go regardless of formation and opposition. Looking forward to Southampton Saturday and hoping our run of form there continues........

If you play Rio you might as well count him as a midfielder. After 5 games I do think he could be helped by Ned in a wingback set.
So here is my contribution (5-2-2-1)
Green
Isla. Ned. Rio Caulker Traore
JB.or Henry..........Sandro(or Mutch)
... ..Fer............Nico
Vargas
Vargas. The hypothesis here is Nico will be able to bring out Vargas's running as he did with Ravel. Austin can come into games with Phillips . This way Austin can be saved. Vargas can play as a forward, or coming off the wing.

Finally, finally, people are starting to see the value of playing Henry from the start. Will Redknapp, though? Given our propensity to ship goals, we need Henry's steel in CM, from the start, as opposed to making a hasty change mid-game when Redknapp yet again wakes up to the gorgonzola like nature of our midfield.

The bastion of lies that is tribal football have quoted HR as saying he's a big fan of Dunne and that "if he plays in the next game I think he could do a great job."
Hopefully just an answer in relation to a question about Dunne being finished rather than an indication of selection. I really hope so anyway.

Everything we did in pre-season — the players we brought in, the players we sold — seemed to be with 3-5-2 in mind. To seemingly abandon the system after only one and a half games is very strange. Although we were pathetic against Spurs, against Hull I actually thought we looked ok and could see us improving under the system. What 3-5-2 gives you, and what Harry has said himself, is that you can get 2 guys up front together without getting outnumbered in midfield (if played correctly), against Spurs we had Matt Phillips and Remy (no hold up player, and one winger up front). What’s more when we did play Spurs we had a bunch of newbies thrown together and a serious lack of fitness. Given time, with Vargas coming in to add some energy, I think it would have won us some points. The only concern I have with our current personnel playing 3-5-2 is the left sided centre back. What you want is for your left sided defender to be capable of shifting out to left back if needed, whilst your holding midfielder should be skilled enough to slot into the middle of the 3. Flexibility is key. I have no worries about Henry or Sandro being able to perform the holding role, I have no concerns about the middle or right sided centre back (whoever they may be) but I do worry about the left side. He’s no longer at the club but someone like Matt Connolly would have been excellent in that position, a player comfortable on the ball and capable of filling in on occasion at full back, however it looks like his career has stalled and another one not to fulfil their potential. As it is, I think we have to go for the best 3 defenders and for me that’s Caulker, Ned and Rio. I’d work with Ned on doing a job on the left side of the 3 and see how he finds it. The pace Caulker and Ned would add to the team would also compensate for Rio’s ageing legs. I do take the argument though that we’re on a bad run and sticking to an understood formation, with players that no their role may be the right approach. Me, I’d roll the dice and stick to what I’d worked on during pre-season.
Green
Caulker Rio Ned
Traore Isla
Henry
Fer Nico
Vargas Austin

Apparently Dunne could be in line for a recall.

If he does decide to drop Rio (amazingly), I can almost guarantee it will be for Dunne ahead of Onouha. HR is that much of a tw@t.
