Do we need to upgrade Fairwood Airport 23:08 - Aug 15 with 1987 viewsjackharris

I've noticed we seem to get our private jets to away games from Rhoose. Would it possible to somehow upgrade Fairwood to be able to fly to away games. We could train then fly! Catherine Zeta Jones and her ex Michael Douglas used to fly into there!

Very proud to be voted Planet Swans Poster of the Year 2017 by my fellow posters. Especially on a site that nearly had 20 million impressions last year.

It's something the Welsh Government should be doing rather than their purchase of Cardiff Airport.

Maybe then Edwina Hart could fly to Cardiff instead of closing off all the motorway junctions that delay her as well.

Pembrey is in better nick than Farwood. I pop in to both now and again and the state of Fairwood is shocking.

Are u sure that MD is Catherine's ex ?? Thought they were still married ?

I understand Pablo used Fairwood Airport quite a bit going back and fore to Spain for treatment although he does have Sergio Garcia as a brother in law who may have helped !!!!!!!!!!!!

Runways for commercial jets are about 10ft thick so they can take the weight, whereas Fairwood is some hardcore covered with tar macadam these passing Irish lads put on top.

Swansea should have a regional airport but there is no appetite to promote anything here by the WAG.
Some will say we are too small but I would respond by saying Southend, Bournemouth, Blackpool, exeter, etc, etc.
In short there is a big enough population to support a regional airport. It would need a subsidy in the first instance as initial support but as business grows in the area so would its airport.

There was talk of development at Pembrey wjth uk and euro connections.
But the again there was plans for a tram system linking Neath , Port Talbot, Cwmtawe and Swansea.
But it will never happen, why because The East is to have billions on links.
Swansea airport owner is a London business man who has run down the airport and done away with night landing.
Tata and Amazon had been looking into using the airport and i also believe at one stage looking at using Pembrey

I took a few flights to London on the old Air Wales service which operated Dornier 228s and ATR42s in the early 2000s. People are probably right to say Fairwood would need an awful lot of work. I suspect the runways are okay for smaller turbo-prop aircraft, but Fairwood is not licensed for night operations.

The fact that those regional airports are thriving whilst Cardiff airport struggles is a terrible indictment of the mismanagement of Cardiff. How can somewhere with the size and population of Wales be barely able to support a single airport? Those living down in Pembrokeshire take up to 2 hours to get to Cardiff but many would continue on another half hour to get to Bristol or go even further afield.
With management of this standard Wales will never be anything more than a struggling back water.

Northern Ireland has two, or is it three, International Airports with half the population of Wales.

sadly a non starter as the infra structure isn't there to expand.
Can you imagine the traffic along Gower Road if it was.
Airports need to be near motorway network.

Its a fight alright as here in the north west ,Manchester is a huge airport and getting bigger but Liverpool has fought its corner and has a decent transport system to the City and outlying areas,

Correct. In completely the wrong place.

On the M4 corridor is obvious but where would be big enough ? Even RHOOSE is in the wrong place. Instead of spending £100 m or more on improving the roads to that one they could use that money as a start towards a new airport anywhere between Swansea and Cardiff directly off the M4 easily accessible to the whole of the S Wales population. That's around 1.5 m which, as I mentioned previously, is equal to the entire population of NI which has 2(3) airports.

It takes me longer to get to my house in Ystradgynlais from Fairwood than it does from Rhoose. It would be great to see a Swansea airport near the M4 though but where is there any land big and flat enough?

The problem is the usual Cardiff centric policies. Any investment in transport infrastructure in Cardiff will only benefit them due to its geographical position. Critics will argue that it is the gateway to wales. It is however only one of many. All of which need upgrading. The transport in the main spine of wales and the western coastal region is a complete dogs dinner.
We will always be a backwater as long as all investment continues in the S E. It needs to be redistributed in future.

This would be a much better option than trying to start a "our airport is better than your airport" contest between Swansea and Cardiff.

Pembrey is in better nick than Farwood. I pop in to both now and again and the state of Fairwood is shocking.

There was serious interest in developing Pembrey into a trans Atlantic hub with a lot of Chinese and Russian money involved. Ryanair were keen to get involved too but for whatever reason it all seems to have gone quiet.
A pity because there would be many advantages to a scheme like that, built on an old brown grilled site and creating thousands of jobs. The local transport infrastructure could be improved and a rail link would be easily doable. But that would virtually shut Cardiff "international"* down for good. After buying the place the WAG would never allow Pembrey to happen

I wrote about this a couple of weeks ago. Gower World with a whole new resort attracting people worldwide. There's space down there and not much else. Sheep, hedges and few buildings and some underused wonderful beaches which need exploiting.
