Lambert Could Get Premier League Lifeline
Tuesday, 26th Sep 2017 20:37

Rickie Lambert could be heading back to the Premier League according to media reports, Arron Sanders takes a look at the news.

According to a report today from the Independent, new Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson is considering an approach for the former Saints hero Rickie Lambert following news of an injury to his first choice striker Christian Benteke.

Having worked with the veteran 35 year old during his time as England manager, Hodgson is eager to bring in some cover in his attacking area of the Eagles squad and with his options limited due to the transfer window being closed Lambert has emerged as his best option available.

The Liverpudlian has not had the best of fortunes since leaving St Mary's with spells at boy hood club Liverpool, West Brom and Cardiff not going to plan for the 35 year old former Southampton and Bristol Rovers goal machine.

Hopefully Lambert and Palace can get a deal done and he can have one last run in the big time, and he gets back amongst the goals (just not against Saints please Rickie).

The report states that Palace are confident of tying up a deal within the next couple of weeks and I for one hope it all works out for the big man.

It's a romantic notion, but he's 35 and his career since he left Saints hasn't exactly been glittering. Sadly, there's a reason he's a free agent - no Championship or even League One team have come in for him - and Palace are only in for him because with Benteke and Wickham both injured they're desperate. Sure I'd like to see him back to his best, and I genuinely hope it works out for him because I, along with every other Saints fan, love the guy. Unfortunately the reality is we had the best of him and it's all been downhill since Anfield.

Speed was never his forte rather his superb reading of the game, holding up the ball, making space for others and dead ball acuracy were. Sainst havent had this since Pelle (the B side to SRL's A side) so if he came back on a pay per play basis I'd be happy - the expectation on Saints to score is low at the moment and as most goals of late have come from set pieces having deadly SRL could well work. Certainly give supporters a lift. Great PR for Les etc.

Bring him in - if nothing else to teach Tadic how to take penalties.

I hope it happens, Ricky is the one lad who made his own luck through sheer graft and determination and fully deserves a lucky break now. Those Scouse barstewards ruined his career.

Yes, I know he wasn't forced to go there but there were already rumours at the time that Cortese was about to dump him so what options did he have?

Who knows he could excel at Palarse - not difficult you might say - and get another England cap or two especially if Roy kept the key to the manager's loo.
