| News Comment | No Place For Ward Prowse in England Squad at 15:28:28
Has always been the way and is getting worse and worse. How many games did Alli and Alexander-Arnold play before they got their first cap? A handful at most. I remember Clyne struggled to get game time for England when he was at Southampton. As soon as he moved to Liverpool he was first choice right back! |
| News Comment | Saints V Tottenham Hotspur The Verdict at 10:36:46
We've seen these glimmers of hope before. The team and manager get it right and put in a good performance one week, the next they are all over the place and the manager reverts to form. There's still a long way to go. When we've strung 3 good performances together, then maybe we can start believing in Mauricio Pellegrino (and I really do want to). |
| News Comment | Eric Black Resigns From Saints at 14:09:43
The rumours I heard were he was popular but a bit crap at his job. We've all come across people like that! Then there was the whole Telegraph sting thing (the one that cost Alladyce his England job). Nothing came of it but it was highly suspicious. I think he should have gone last summer when Puel went, I think Saints can do better. So I'm pleased he's gone. Hope is back is ok though. |
| News Comment | Saints V Everton The Verdict at 13:28:04
Everton's goal was not a wonder goal, it should never have been a goal at all! Saints were too busy thinking about their half time oranges! They failed to clear their lines and then didn't close down Sigursson who had all the time in the world to place his shot and he nearly fluffed it. That aside it was a great game and a great team performance. Some of the attacking moves were sublime. PEH was immense and both Tadic and Boufal showed just what they can do when they can be arsed. Austin was the difference though. I was dreading making the 120 mile round trip for the dross that had been played, but I'm so glad I did. As SaintMark said one swallow does not make a summer. MP has to learn from this, pick plays on their merits and how they fit is system, He must not revert back to his favourite players . Austin and PEH both deserve a run of starts and Redmond needs to earn has place back. I'd say unchanged side against Citeh but Lemina has to come in, so Lemina in for JWP . |
| News Comment | Saints V Watford The Preview at 14:20:18
Interesting article from the Beeb about the influence of individual players: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40974299 Not only does it show that none of our players are not influential enough - no game changers. But it also shows Davis is our most influential and that Tadic is a waste of space! Apart from Davis, most of the comments on the message boards seems to suggest the fans already knew this! Time to drop Tadic and let Boufal show us why Saints bought him. Maybe he can be our game changer |
| News Comment | Saints Prepare To Batten Down The Hatches at 11:54:31
If £81 is being offered for him then Saints should bite their hand off. Give Celtic their cut then get in Ben Gibson, along with a creative and consistent attacking midfielder and a big strong target man to play off Gabbi. Finally give every fan going to the Watford game £100 and there would not be a single fan who would have a bad word to say about the bored! |
| News Comment | One More Piece Left To Put In Pellegrino's Jigsaw ! at 11:18:26
Sell / Release Gardos and buy Gibson. Make all the CBs fight for a place then sell the weakest/most uninterested in Jan. wonder what VVD would do in that situation! They should do something similar in midfield as well! I honestly can't imagine why I don't buy and sell football players for a living! :) |
| News Comment | Southampton FC Need Ryan Giggs ! at 09:43:39
Whatever happens Black needs to go, I'm amazed he is still there. Someone in the management team needs EPL experience but they should be appointed on merit of their coaching ability and how well they will work with the the new manager. Not their playing career, the languages they speak or who they play golf with. |
| News Comment | Puel On The Brink ! at 11:45:45
I think you're right, I'd even say the decision was mutually agreed some months ago - Puel knows his services are no longer required and is enjoying his gardening leave. I also think the club is playing for time, but everything hinges on Lander Holdings. Once they get the nod the club will roll out the new first choice manager at the same time along with announcements that no one is leaving the club this summer and pay rises for VVD and RB. If Lander don't get the nod, it'll be a whole different story with Puel, VVD and RB's departures all announced but no new manager. |
| News Comment | Saints V Stoke City The Verdict at 13:48:12
I cannot help but think we should have been competing with Everton for 7th. If I remember correctly, apart from spending a fortune on a manger, they didn't really bring in many players over the summer. They finished 11th last season, 16 points below us. This year 15 points above us. What difference that manager made to the two teams! A good manager will make the most of the players he has and play a system that suits them and gets them competing a winning. Puel rarely did that (City away, Inter at home and the EL Cup semis and final are the few exceptions). Yes they had Lukaku, yes well lost our 2 CBs mid way through the season. But if you really think about it there is not a lot of difference between the 2 squads. Some might even say we have the better squad. At no point at all were we ever in touching distance of them. I have nothing against Puel at all, but the spark isn't there. As the article and the comments say there is no enthusiasm from anyone associated with the playing part of the club - manager, team, or fans. I cannot see how Puel is going to solve that, if he could do he would have done it by now. Even if Les buys every player Puel asks for and lets him form a team to play his system I still cannot see us competing for long. His history in France is always 1 good season followed by 1 or 2 seasons where the results tailed off and the club finished lower than the previous season. And this was our good season! |
| News Comment | Saints V Manchester United The Preview ! at 16:22:36
I hope Mr Puel is reading this and goes for your squad. I would be inclined to start JWP ahead of Davis for a bit more creativity. Davis can come on an shore up the midfield when we're 2-0 up! I don't believe that will be the team we'll see tonight I can't help but think it'll be more along the lines of: Forster Pied, Yoshi, Stephens, Bertrand Davis, JWP, Romeu Tadic, Gabbi, Boufal After all some of them have had a rest and that line up is bound to work eventually. |
| News Comment | Saints Reportably Sounding Out Portugese Managerial Pair at 10:21:04
Saintmark,StRipper & LordDZLucan, a bad workman blames his tools! A good manager will work with what he's got and make it competitive. Puel is not doing that, he is playing the same failing team week in week out and keeping his fingers crossed. Earlier in the season Puel experimented and tried different things, sometimes they worked other times he got it wrong but that's life. Now he seems to be going through the motions. He has either been given his noticed, has decided he is leaving or he has lost all confidence in himself and the team. |
| News Comment | Was Saints Wembley Ticket Allocation Method Fair ? at 11:55:56
I think generally it was fair and expected, however not including away games is unfair. If anything you are showing more support by going to an away game than a home game. I did think League Cup games would count more as well. The membership thing is a bit of a con as well. If it hadn't been for the Europa bundle I wouldn't have bought it, but I'm on the database and they know how many games I've been to! All worked out in the end, got my tickets this morning when my 8yo's allocation came up. They had even managed to find some Category 2 tickets to make available! Buying tickets not to go to the Arsenal FA Cup game was the best £20 I ever spent! :) |
| News Comment | Saints V West Ham United The Verdict at 12:58:07
There were countless reasons why we lost the game - constantly giving the ball away, not winning any 2nd balls, not putting pressure on them until they got near our 18 yard box, not buying an experienced CD, not taking our chances etc etc The not taking chances is a theme of the season. We had 21 shots, 7 on target. We should be getting more than 1 goal for that effort! The not taking chances is now even more of an issue now our defence is questionable. Although Stevens looked (understandably) nervous at times, I don't blame him for the defeat. I don't blame Puel (I'm still not 100% convinced either way by him) either. I blame the entire team and management team - it was an abject display all round. The BBC review of the game started talking about relegation fights when it described our defensive performance. Something has to be done, and I've just seen Caceres is having a medical. How long since he last played? Can't help but think some straws are being clutched here! Why was Fonte allowed to leave without a replacement? What happened to that German in Moscow? Why was Sakho not pursued? The club needs to explain how this shambles was allowed to happen. |
| News Comment | Can Ryan Bertrand Be The Answer In The Centre Of Defence ? at 10:29:59
Whenever Yoshida plays for a long period the pundits start purring about him. He is a good defender, not the best but still PL quality. Also in the last couple of seasons his concentration has got better. So give him a break and stop lining him up to fail. We need Yoshi now more than ever! |
| News Comment | Dan's Report ! Will Claude Puel Be Saints Manager Next Season ? at 10:21:35
CP has shown he has the tactical brain to succeed in the PL, look at the results against Liverpool and Man City. Given time and support he could become one of our best managers ever. All he needs are some players to find the net, Les to open the wallet and buy some CBs oh and to stop bloody tinkering with the team! So lets give him another season and see if everyone at SFC has learnt anything from this season. |
| News Comment | Wembley Ticket Arrangements Announced at 09:53:22
The UEFA League bundle boosted me to the magic 5 but even after buying tickets for Arsenal and West Ham my 8yo son has only got 3 home games. Not going without him, so fingers crossed there's another category announced on the 13th! |
