The thing which I probably find most convincing is that CO2 is a greenhouse gas (as demonstrated by John Tyndall in 1859) and mankind is creating a phenomenal amount of it.

Lol, yeah that' what swings it for me too, closely followed by the literally hundreds of thousands of pages of peer reviewed, largely open-access papers you can read on it.

I think you should be more worried about Methane. Plants love carbon dioxide, vegetarians would be most miffed with no cabbages to munch on.

Of course the deniers are "religious" - or at least ideological. They are all right wing journalists or politicians, virtually none of them with a science degree. Climate change doesn't fit in with their quasi-religious devotion to "the market" so it has to go. Step one is to try to make it into a debate about opinions instead of observation of data.
Funnily enough Maggie Thatcher was pretty sound on climate change, but guess what, she had a science background.
But Kropotkin is right - there's no point trying to debate this stuff on here - you'll only get at best a load of unevidenced opinion thrown about as fact, an inability to follow basic rues of logic [see OP for example] a refusal to accept any rebuttal on the basis that its interference with their right to freedom of speech, and at worst a load of abuse.

How can you have a religion based on "denial".Religion is a positive statement of belief and very little of it is based on logic. The whole thing is just another left/right wing spat - if you're not with us you're against us.It's probably the most politicised non - political topic on earth. To my mind it all started when nuclear detente and the collapse of the Soviet bloc/communism occurred. No more anti nuclear marches and pressure groups, and very little funding. So where can we find another anti American cause?Voila. I seem to remember the Greens wanted to have all "deniers" chucked into jail.Mateys, only the Jews could get away with that bullshit tactic. And so it goes on,the insults fly like some malevolent confetti and the world just keeps on turning regardless. IMO of course.
"How can you have a religion based on "denial"
You kidding? Thou shalt not, thou shalt not, thou shalt not. Deny yourself sex, deny yourself money. Deny all other gods but the one god. The whole structure is based on "we're right so everyone else is wrong," and denial of all other belief systems. True, its not based on logic. Nor is climate change denial, I'm afraid.
You're right, it has become a left-right thing. Which is what gets my goat, cos not so long ago it wasn't, there were just as many Tory greens as Socialist ones. Still are a fair few in the more moderate parts of the Tory party. And I'll agree that some lefty greens are only too glad to find a reason to have a pop at capitalism. But IMO the big politicisation of this has come from the ideological right who took one look at the hippies in the Green party and decided they were against it. I've read climate change warnings from people of every political belief and many more from people of none, but I've never yet read a denialist piece from anyone other than a card-carrying right-winger - Lawson, Monckton, the Torygraph, the TeaParty, UKIP, you name it.
Slightly unfairly putting you in a "right-wing" bag, there Blob, but I suspect you're not a natural pinko.
You may be right about the politics starting with the end of the Cold War but the science predates it long-time. Man-made climate change through greenhouse gas emissions was identified by Arrhenius in 1890 odd and it was mainstream science in the 60s - I've inherited my father-in-laws textbooks on the subject and he's been dead 20 years.

"not a natural pinko"? I've heard he isn't even a natural blond.
I've outed this bloke as a Grammar Schoolboy before (bet his name is either Gareth, Toby or Quentin), but he seems to get by with a supposed wit based on unexpected and humorous combining or contrasting of ideas or expressions.
Don't worry, come the revolution, I've got dibs on putting the rope round his neck.

Well I like him. Just disagree with him on 99% of everything other than QPR.

I can officially confirm he is a natural blond

Hang about.I'm talking about denial and religious philosophy based on a direct reaction to some other doctrine,I suppose the nearest you come to it but not quite is the C of E.Annnnyway it's going nowhere constructive, like a snake digesting its own tail.No one has shown me any hard proof,100% proof of anything so I must remain skeptical - if it don't scratch a window it ain't money. The term "Denier" I find quite insulting actually, but hell I've been called worse....and that's just from Scotty. Just you revolutionaries beware, remember the lesson of Robespierre, you'll be the first ones up against the wall staring down the barrels of the Kalashnikovs with a surprised stare on your boats. I on the other hand will be basking in the glory of having bribed the leaders with "The Secrets Of Eternal Blonde Locks".No amount of ingratiation and promises of Man Love will save you.

Ah, Robespierre. Got rid of Catholicism and started a new religion called 'The Cult of the Supreme Being'. Nobody was quite sure if the 'Supreme Being' was supposed to be God or Robespierre himself.

The atmosphere is 99% Nitrogen & Oxygen. CO2 makes up about 0.04%. That's estimated to be about 10% of it's highest level many millions of years ago. There is no evidence that by doubling the CO2 to 0.08% would have any detrimental impact to the climate.

In the new Steven Erikson book the "Deniers" of "Mother Dark" are persecuted to help instigate a Tiste Andii civil war.
Think I may be digressing.
So what you're saying is "Deniers" are in fact the plucky and noble revolutionaries seeking to overthrow an evil and repressive empire? Well I'm beginning to see it all in a new light now Met. Always fancied ushering perfumed fops up the steps to the guillotine.
