It's finally done, but far too late. In the early days I was happy to give him a chance, but his arrogance and failure to adapt was his eventual downfall.

Throughout this whole sorry episode, I was surprised that a number of the players backed the style of play (inc Ramsdale and THB, KWP), when it clearly wasn't working. The table and stats didn't lie.

I am pleased he has gone. Do I think we will survive ? Not a chance, but it will give us a window to start planning effectively for next year.

If Martin was hoping to get a gig like Vincent Kompany, who also failed with this possession based style of play at Burnley (and was also about 6th choice at Bayern) he is more deluded than I thought. His CV is absolutely trashed and it wasn't that good to start with.

The only winner here, is Swansea. They managed to off load the arrogant tw*t and get paid at the same time.

It’s sad when a Southampton manager is sacked as that means the team are doing poorly.

The next appointment will determine the future of the club.
There’s a few ex Premier League clubs treading water in The Championship in front of half full grounds.

Choose very carefully Sports Republic.

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

They wont. It'll be some bizarre choice from the Swiss league that Rasmus has identified.

I wanted him gone as much as next person. The one thing i would say is the club bought terribly in the summer. As ever with this board they went for quantity rather than quality, so he never had the tools . That said we should have double the points that we have right now.

We will now be saddled with more players that we can’t move on. Watch the Tyler Dibbling money get frittered away

Well that’s us fvcked then.

I’ve no faith in Sports Republic what so ever.

The appointment of the under 21 coach and the statement about youth is worrying.

A couple of points on some of the comments on this thread,
.

Firstly players are always going to back the manager when he is in place, they have to do interviews and they have to be positive towards the club, no one can accuse them of not trying to play for Martin and when being interviewed they toed the club line.

Secondly I think some of the summer signings are better than we think, both Brereton & Archer were not used to their strengths, they run channels and we didn't play that way under Martin.

Perhaps they and a couple of the others will be far better in a different system, we have to give them a chance to see if they can

Agree,Nick.
We have some poor players, some good and some potentially very good.
The way we have played this season has not brought the best out of them.
The players looked confused, disconsolate and at times not fit.
We need a good broom to clear the place out and bring some new faces in.

What they really need to do is say to any prospective manager " we know that if we get relegated it is not your fault but we want a plan were we improve this year and if we are relegated stay and work to get us back up again" then we can hopefully plan for the tactics of the manager to carry on for the next season.
I am not sure SR will go for a proven PL manager but would any of those be prepared to go down with us and come back up, hopefully.
Personally I think Graham Potter would be best as his tactics are similar and it would not be a radicle change for the players. But would he come to Southampton in our current situation.

Speaks volumes of the recruitment when both our loan signings are not involved last night.

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

I am curious now, whether SR would have sacked Martin if we had drawn or kept defeat down to 1 or 2 Nil ?

If not, then I will accept (reluctantly) the result last night, if it was final act that got him sacked. I couldn't take it any more.

I am now looking forward to Fulham game and a good day out.

I am more relieved than pleased. Russell Martin was clearly deeply flawed as a manager and I would expect to see him return in either League 1 or the lower reaches of the Championship - where he belongs.

However, for me, the main issue is Sport Republic. Their track record so far on both footballing and business decisions is frankly woeful. Personally, I don't feel like giving them another penny of my money unless either something radically changes (eg Ankerson leaves)
or they demonstrate clear improvement (something I am not confident of).

5 nil at half time forced them to sack him.

They would never have made the decision on their own. The previous 15 games proved that.

Said it before and will (no doubt) say it again, but I would have total respect for the owners had they of stuck with RM until the end of season. Yes, I couldn’t stand the manager but if S.R’s policy is to play that brand of football and they stuck with it I could have accepted it.

To pull the trigger this late now is absolutely blöody ludicrous as they could, and should have done it months ago. This relegation is all on them at Board Level and for me they are more culpable than the loon that just got sacked.

Sports Republic are a problem

I was told by a very, very reliable source before the game that the club internally were fully aware of the mess they were in but didn't want to sack martin for a number of reasons.

The first and most important was cost, the second was that they didn't believe they could get the right manager in to replace him as they wouldn't find people who would want the job, and the third was they didn't believe anyone they currently had in the club was capable to take on the role as interim manager.

So given all of that i think if he'd kept the score low or got a draw he'd never have been sacked, and also makes me think the club have no idea who the next manager should be, which is a real worry

And the fact that he had disappeared down the tunnel before the halftime whistle, missing the 5th goal all together.

Well the costs are down to themselves. That's what happens, when you reward a Manager with a New contract after He finishes 4th with a squad that should have gained automatic Promotion...

Ah for the days of Les and the Black Box. We would not only have known Martin’s replacement, but the next two managers thereafter. God I miss those days
