Lack of quality in the final third tonight. Several chances could have been finished with an Austin, Mitrovic, Murray, Long, Vydra type striker, and we just havnt got one.

Poll: Who will the other play off

He's not that great is he really.

Cows. Arse. Banjo.

He had three chances, he has to take one in three.

Just not a striker. Workrate alone isn't enough.

Armstrong looks very promising though.

Yeah, I agree. Haaland would have scored at least two of those chances. #AnnounceErling #SignAFùckingTenMillionPoundStriker

If Dykes ever plays another game for us the Beale hasn’t got a clue. There was a question the other day on here asking about our worst players. He is without doubt the worst centre forward we have ever had and by a long way. In fairness to Blackpool they were better than us in every position. They also played with purpose , pace and had a plan. Beaten by the better team

Dykes works hard but that's not enough, I've defended him for long enough but he's just not improving and not good enough. Time to give Bonne a chance whilst phasing in Armstrong I guess...

Poll: Who’s better?

Not really seeing any change from how we finished last season. Dykes has not shown any improvement from when he joined 2 years ago, just can't finish. Armstrong Sinclair looks a handful but unless we can bring a striker in we are going to struggle. Unfortunately there are no Hugill and Wells loan type players at this level available to us.

Woeful. If Beale has a plan I’m struggling to see it.

Trying to work out how we are supposed to pass the ball out when there’s a massive hole in the midfield.

agree re Dykes but I'm afraid we don't have a striker capable of more than around 7-8 goals a season in the Championship... we are in a spot of bother.

We cannot afford a 20 goals a season striker so need to spread the goal scoring around and everyone must contribute. The team that played last night is still a distance from the team that Beale will eventually field, although I am hoping he reverts to a back 3 again when Salter if fit again as we look too narrow and constantly exposed at the back. I honestly cannot envisage either Dozzell or Johansen making the first eleven when everyone is fit.

It is too early to hit the panic button yet. A fully fit squad, playing in the right formation, has enough about to do well in this league. We might not see it until September, but it is coming. Laird and Roberts showed enough last to give hope that the quality is there. Willock returning on Saturday is another piece of the puzzle to slot back in. With the return of Salter and and eventually Richards, and the ongoing development of Armstrong, we will kick on.

It was disappointing last night, but we could as easily won the game as lost it. Most games are determined on fine margins and with that little bit of extra quality. With a fully fit team out there, we will have enough more often than not, to make the difference in our favour.

Keep the faith.

Very good post, I think.

I wouldn't be so quick to write off JoJo or Dozzell either. We know the former can do it and I thought we saw a really good second half from Dozzell last night when he seemed to go more central?

Overall, I thought last night was better than last Saturday.

Dozzell noticeably improved when Johansen went off. He did play more central and when he got the ball he looked for a positive forward pass rather than sideways/backwards.

I really want to be more optimistic but I just think we will really struggle to get enough goals this season.
Holy junior said to me yesterday "buts its effectively the same team as last season", and I couldn't argue with that however there seems to be a real lack of belief when we get into the last 3rd at the mo.
I get the argument about goals coming all over the pitch and more players to come back from injury but in all honesty everything seems to hinge around Willock... If Willock is out we really struggle to do anything creative... maybe a set piece goal or a long range effort, but open play is so, so predictable.
We need a striker who will give opposition defenders a torrid time and only Armstrong seems to fit the bill at the mo.... Surely its too much pressure for such an inexperienced player? Roberts is a useful addition to the team but my Lids supporting mate has told me that he will only get 5-6 goals this season. I have written off Dykes and Bonne (not up to the Championship). I really, REALLY want to be proved wrong.

Should we read more into the Bonne admission from the squad last night? Anyone see him or hear of an injury?

He looked happy and up for it when on the pitch on Saturday?

Although he has no pace i think he maybe a more natural finisher than Dykes and if hes still around, with the runs and crosses of Laird last night you would hope that Bonne would be more of an instinctive finisher?

But maybe there's interest?

If there is, this could free up a bit of budget for i guess a young pacey 'Prem loan forward' that i know they dont want to do, but may have no other option?

Before you start slagging off a striker who works hard for the team but is not a finisher, tell.me who've have in the squad that is better.

Don't say Armstrong who has never scored a football league goal.

Your lad is right, it is effectively the same team as last year minus the goals from Austin and Gray. The lack of goals from Dykes and Bonne very nearly got us relegated before remember…

Scooters, Tunes, Trainers and QPR.

I guess the bigger question is how has our leadership team allowed us to end up in this position. We can’t afford to buy anybody so we are reliant on a top class scouting network and a first rate youth development set up. We clearly have neither = we have started this season with Dykes and Bonne as our main goal threats.

Scooters, Tunes, Trainers and QPR.

A striker who can't finish - that's going to end well. We know we don't have anyone better...and whose fault is that?

I just typed a long response to this thread and then though s0d it, it is what it is.

We will probably spend this season back in the lower half as we often have done in this division.
We are financially poor, have an old and small ground (which imo we cannot fill because of its condition and obstructive views) so should just accept this and hopefully enjoy some good games to go with a lot more like last night.

Well lets look at the facts, has he improved since he came here ? Does he score enough goals for the team ? Have you watched his movement in the box or lack of. ? Does he have a good first touch ? For your convienience the answer to all of the above is a resounding no. If running around not producing much and losing possession frequently is the answer we might as well have stuck with Big Matt Smith. Now I am not privy to what goes on in training with the strikers but if Charlie Austin when he was here couldn,t help to improve him I think the writing is on the wall. So we either persist with playing this very limited but big hearted player or maybe try something different, I know what I prefer
