Birmingham City...1976. We lost. Miserable Rangers turn out, got sussed boarding a bus to St Andrews, everything went from bad to worse. Lucky to get out of town in one piece.

Villa away in May 1977 as I almost got stabbed, had my scarf nicked and got back to Euston to find Liverpool and Man Utd fans brawling on the eve of the cup final.Closely followed by Bristol city for the march to the ground, getting trodden on by a police horse, pool balls and other objects being thrown at us by the wurzels,a 1-0 defeat and Stanley breaking his leg.

August 1978, Liverpool away opening fixture. 100 on the supporters club reserved carriages. No away end just the back rows of the main stand. Left early, got sussed on the bus, got followed, got asked the time. got a smack in the mouth. Got to Lime St looking for some protection from a local police officer who on learning of our predicament told us we shouldn’t have come then. All a bit too much for 16yr old me. Still surprised my Dad let me go.

Bristol city that day was bad. Being charged by police horses. Who thought it was a good idea for fans to use the same tea bar at half time. Stanley’s leg dangling can still picture it now.

Playoff final v Cardiff. Was at uni in Leeds at the time and had an exam two days later. Caught the train down to Bristol so I could meet my dad and catch a ride with him so we could feel like we were traveling down with the rest of the Rs fans. Thanks to the game going to extra time, by the time we got back to Bristol I could only get a train to Birmingham and spent the night in the station overnight. Basically zero sleep so when I finally got back to Leeds the next day passed out without being able to study for the exam.

Still would have been worth if it Williams had passed...

Yeovil was funny!

Walking through town and a bloke in wellies came up to me
"You must be pig"
"Why's that"
"All pigs got ring through nose"

Idiot.

Pubs did get lively, but we won the game..........

On the whole, going with a group of mates, the experiences back then were shared and there was always a laugh on the way, and comradery.

Luton away in that cup game was dismal though, I went up with silly Jim and that lot, got split up before he was attacked.

The game that really got to me in many ways was the 1-0 loss at anfield in the cup, after the 2-2 at hq. i couldn't be consoled, because that night i realised that wonderful team wouldn't win anything and get the accolades it deserved.

Honourable mention to tranmere, 8hr round trip on a ferry and called off.

Stoke away in the 75/76 season I think, all the qpr fans was locked in some sort shed by the police as hundreds of Stoke idiots wanted to get at us & wad in there for a while until police cleared the area,
Another one was Oldham away 66/67 only one coach load of us but was stormed by Oldham fans from all areas after the match, that was scary & eventually we was escorted out of Oldham after police managed cordon off our coach from fans

Forest away after god knows how many FA Cup replays, another aborted attempt at winning it, then a stampede of Forest fans and ripping my shin open on one of those spiky chain things they hang at shin height in pub car parks to take down unsuspecting drunks and away supporters.

That was a long journey home.

Forest away in the 80s. Absolutely bloody freezing. Coldest I've ever been at a game.

Lost 4-0. Nigel Clough scored a hat-trick in 4 minutes. Was still the fastest in the top flight until quite recently. We were rubbish. When we did get one in the net for a consolation it was disallowed.

Also, I travelled with a Forest supporting mate and had his smugness to enjoy all the way back to London.

Have had better days.

Leeds in the 6th rd. FAC. R's players all heading towards the tunnel before the final whistle to make sure they got away and we lost.

The grass is always greener.

I’ll say that game as well, wind was whipping the water off the Trent, my half time coffee slipped straight through my fingers at half time they were so cold.
Was also at Luton in 88 for the cup, horrible experience, been there loads including when away fans were banned but that night was something else.
Birmingham away 1986, a few days before the milk cup semi, only a 7000 crowd, Rangers fans fighting themselves, got lost in the city after being told like at was closed , it wasn’t and didn’t get home until midnight.
Stockport away league cup 1990, 0-0 draw, drove the wrong way down the motorway for about half an hour before realising, M1 had roadworks, got home at 5AM and had to be up for work at 8.

Christ that was the coldest. Went up on a supporters coach and had radio 2 on all the way waiting for the inevitable announcement that the match had like the rest of the country’s fixtures had been called. No such luck. Walk to the ground past various breakers yards was miserable and stood on the corner of the open terrace opposite the Railway Stand. The only time we had the chance to warm up was when we scored and by the time we had finished celebrating Archie Gemmill had slammed a 30 yarder into the top corner to restore their lead. Didn’t thaw out until we had got back to London.

Another worst game. Norwich away 1976. Joined the mass of Rangers supporters on the A12 to Norfolk all full of optimism. This was on paper the easiest of the three remaining games. What a miserable long journey back. The rest as they say is history.

leeds in about 2001? under olly, the 6-1 loss after being ahead, padula was meant to come on as sub but forgot shinpads and in the time he took, we were losing! anyway lsa coach going up caught fire!! we waited for a change of coach at scratchwood, poor ol goochy fell over a crash barrier as we moved from coach to safety, the coach sent was an emergency one with no loo, just a hole in the cubicle floor, so coming back in the freezing snowy conditions was fun! we had 3000+ there that day to see brian deane score four ffs....

I was at that one. I got in the ground early doors though so missed the trouble. Mocking the locals in the ground was hugely enjoyable.

I was also at that Luton cup game. Not a pleasant atmosphere and we topped it off by losing to a bloody own goal.

Brighton away a few years back over Christmas I think. Went with Brighton supporting relatives, had to get the stupid ride and drive bus to the ground, we were absolutely outplayed and Ned was harshly sent off. Then had to queue for a bus for ages to get back to the car.

Stockport in one of our 50+ third round cup exits in January 1994 was a pretty bloody miserable day. Andy Preece, Big Kevin Francis and sleet coming down sideways.

Started well with Barker scoring early on and thinking we would walk it.

I went to this game with a Brighton supporting colleague. Sat in the home end and had to stand up every time they scored to keep up some kind of pretence. Even had to applaud Knockeart in the hospitality lounge afterwards after he’d torn us a new one.

We had such an average team at the time and it was difficult to see any light at the end of the tunnel. Come to think of it, every time I’ve been to the Amex it’s been the same story.

Fortunately my Brighton colleague and his mates were sympathetic and we ended up having a good few pints afterwards. Probably because they’ve seen their club go through some seriously sh1t times.

Just realised fecking Keith Stroud was the ref! No wonder we had a very dodgy sending off.
Brighton had a top quality line up that day.... we certainly didn’t.

I think it was Bradford away, last game of the season, an early kick-off. We lost, maybe 3-0. Nothing riding on the game for us.

Spent most of the trip wondering if I'd lost my mind going.
