800 low paid, low quality jobs lost in a dump like Swansea. There seems to be an agenda to run Swansea, Llanelli and West Wales in general into the ground.

Aye! A case of the Tories punishing this part of the world because of its historical close association with strong trade union activism, strikes against Conservative governments, left wing tradition and donkey voting Labour Party loyalty. Oh and impoverished people living in poor areas never have and never will be Tory priority No 1.

And onto Labour who seem to be blatantly ignoring us!... Either because they think their vote/seats are guaranteed and thus Labour thinks it can take us for granted and prioritise marginal seat constituencies and harder to please volatile voters elsewhere? Or a more despicable and sinister tactic of "Keep em poor, keep em voting Labour".

People should remember the logistics of Swansea. Its pretty much out in the sticks and away from any business hubs or high density population.

Heavy industry and tourism is what really should be looked at for the area to take advantage of whats naturally on offer. Energy - ie water should be another too.

The fact that businesses are happy to pick up 800 jobs like these and just throw them to the Phillippines just so they can increase shareholder return tells you all you need to know about the value the business views them at.

Horrendous for those losing the jobs. But if you keep voting for the insular, narrow minded, cluless politicians with zero business acumen with no interest beyond Cardiff, then can you really complain? Leopards aint changing their spots.

Yep the suggestion on the news is that Manchester was chosen over Swansea because of better transport links.

Liberty Global have made that statement tonight...saying that the lack of investment in the transport links in the area is one of the main reasons for the closure.

Yep! No surprise that after watching a HTV current affairs program that exposed the disgraceful truth that Wales transport infrastructure has been ignored for over FIFTY YEARS!

It is exactly what the Leader of Swansea Council said. That Tory Rat Bag Cairns said it has nothing to do with it. What a joke that geezer is.
The Welsh Assemby are culpable as well. Still preparing the Cardiff Metro, electrification of the Cardiff Valleys and a billion plus pound bypass. All in the Bubble while we and the rest of Wales suffer lack of investment due to transport infrastructure.
BBC Cardiff trying to raise spirits by saying there are plenty of these call centre jobs available but the thing is 'where they are' . I would have a guess. They are 35 miles or so up the road, where they have excellent transport links.

Consumers must boycott companies that do this. For far too long consumers have been allowing companies to get away with ripping jobs out of communities to make a bit more profit.

Agree with most of that but Swansea is not out in the sticks. Cardiff is the boom city of Europe and we are only 35 miles or so away from them.
The problem is we have a joking train system eastward and westward. We have a tourist train northwards. We have an inadequate motorway that is about the have its speed limits reduced to 50mph. No regional airports with farm track roads west of Carmarthen and northwards of Swansea.
The docks are dead on their feet. An Irish Ferry is a no go and the rail links are so inadequate there are talks of taking Neath out of the inter city routes.
SW Wales has the potential to be a major link to Ireland. A deep water port in Milford Haven that could take freight to the Americas and NW Europe and Africa. Ferry links to Northen France and Spain would surely be possible with adaequate road links across the area.
All this would encourage investment across the transport corridors.
It will never happen though as there is not the will or the inclination as the rest of Wales is in managed decline.
Quick mention for Dai Lloyd the Plaid AM. He was first in to express concerns and to start asking questions yet again.

Exactly. Attracting investment costs money. Investing in services, transport etc costs money. All the money is being diverted to one place - Cardiff.

Just look how Europe shapes up. People, money, jobs etc all flow westwards to the big cities in the richer northern european countries. Same is happening in Wales, and in the UK generally.

Wales is sleepwalking into the third world with the way it views its politics and the way the WAG is run. But the easy out for everyone is to point the finger at westminster and blame them. Of course theres a little substance in that, but if they hold all the cards, whats the point in the WAG?

As for all the other stuff about freight and ferry links etc. Is the demand there for that? Not mocking your ideas as thats the sort of thinking which leads to action, but WAG doesnt give a toss about that. Nest feathering layabout slobs who woudl get eaten up in any sort of genuine industry and spat out.

If people want it bad enough, then make enough noise, cos at the moment the status quo apparently suits everyone as they are quiet as mice.

Westminster offer crumbs off the table, its not good enough, this part of Wales was getting European money because it merited it, it should have and should be getting a lot more UK money, a bona fide UK Government would distribute funds and resources to where its needed and look after its citizens equally, London centric policies will cause the UK state to break up .

Interesting thought, I used to work for a global company based in the enterprise park back in 2006, the were given significant grants, practically free rent.
As soon as those grants elapsed they moved their HQ to Bristol, fortunately I was in a position to move with them.
Very sad news for all concerned and their families, I wish them all the best!

Tommy, Richard Branson has virtually nothing to do with Virgin Media.

When Ntl and Telewest merged in 2006, they went to Branson and licensed the Virgin brand name. Like many companies with the Virgin brand name he doesn't own them.

Branded revenue from companies that bear the Virgin name has made him a billionaire.

I suspect many will likely be lost as well at the football club and businesses that rely heavily on it should we be relegated, May 2018 could be a really poor month for this city.

Three parts to this.

Firstly and most importantly, this is awful news for everyone affected. I hope that those on here and elsewhere in Swansea that lose their jobs are able to find new work as soon as possible.

Secondly, there needs to be a proper inquest into why these jobs have gone from Swansea to Manchester. What more could and should the city and the Welsh government be doing?

But finally. They are shedding more than 500 jobs from the UK as a whole. Barely a month goes by on this forum where we don't have a thread about people switching to Kodi and similar. Basically receiving streaming and tv services and paying a relatively tiny amount a year for that service. What the hell do you think is the result of doing that? It's the same with the supermarkets. Threads about how cheap stuff is in Aldi and Lidl, and then people wondering why Sainsbury's and Asda are merging and shedding doubtless loads of jobs.

We need to look at ourselves. We want everything cheaper and cheaper. We switch back and forth from provider to provider. Everything is about how much we can get and how cheaply we can get it. And yet we wonder why jobs are shifted to countries who pay their workers crap all and provide them with no in work protections. We have to make a choice. Either we want as much as possible as cheaply as possible, or we want jobs to remain in this country. Because wanting stuff more cheaply will only result in shipping jobs overseas, automation and unemployment. The people at the top won't lose their jobs - they can't be automated.

We have to look at what we can do differently. We can manufacture luxury products that they can't do as well in The Philippines, or Malaysia, or China, or elsewhere. We can concentrate on services that we have the intellectual capital to do better than others. Or we can accept that we should pay more for products and services made here and provided here to save local jobs. We can't have it all.

Maybe if the government hadn't put the whole country on austerity resulting in pay freezes for thousands we wouldn't need to shop in Aldi.

That's fine. I'm nòt saying people shouldn't. I'm just saying that when they then merge Asda and Sainsbury and lose a bunch of jobs, people can't complain.

Similarly if people pay £100 a year for something you'd have to pay Virgin or Sky £70 a month, don't be surprised when jobs are lost.
