Hi dude,
I'm a Napoli fan too and I love my city.
I suggest you to rent a room in a hotel near the historical centre, near "Piazza Cavour" (Cavour square). This is one of the most beautiful and full or interesting areas in the whole city (UNESCO international heritage). From Cavour ground station you'll be in Piazzale Tecchio (Campi flegrei station) in a few minutes. There are just 2 ground lines, you can't get wrong :)

If you'll stay in this area I invite you to try Sorbillo's pizza (the best in Naples, I think), there you could see many churches, many wonderful buildings, and an underground greek city under roman city under modern city, wonderful! :) You could search for "Napoli sotterranea".

Naples is a safe city, she (it's my lady :) ) has same problems of any big city in Europe but I never had any kind of problem.
