When you realised there was no meaning to life and no God
at 22:37 6 Sep 2024

Yep it's all terrible and doesn't seem to chime with Jesus's teachings.

There's some great stuff in religious texts but it's all down to the people who appoint themselves as interpreters and preachers of it and how they cherry pick the bits that suit them.

Being a spiritual person is something entirely different. I like the idea of being in touch with your own higher (best) self. That doesn't eliminate the stuff that makes life fun. Just means among other things you are a decent person who thinks a bit more deeply about life.

I'm fine about it, whatever they want to believe or do with their time. Specially if it gives them solace.

Problem is that religions tend to tell everyone else what they should be doing and how they live their lives - cos they've got the higher power on their side telling them they're in the right. And who can argue with that? Women not being able to speak in public places, go out in public without a man - well it's god saying it, innit? Anyone less filled with bliss and the milk of human kindness were the nuns at my school largely making everyone's life a misery.

Same with porn but I won't go into that.

I'd forgotten that Francis. That's exactly the kind of thing that can be tightened up playing at a lower level but in a professional team.

Because they're both experienced professionals who play in positions where we're not particularly blessed (particularly Paal). Kolli needs the experience, isn't particularly effective defensively and plays in a position where we have a lot of options.

Also you can't compare them to Manning and Bright. From my memory they both practically downed tools from the beginning of the season. Paal and Dunne are both putting the effort in.

I agree. Even Harry Kane went out on loan before playing for Spurs. I don't see why Kolli thinks he's too good for that.

It's a pity because I thought he was going to be one of the few decent prospects for the club who was actually going to see it through with us for a couple of years before going onto possibly better things.

The thing is that it's always a gamble playing young players as they are prone to howlers as well as good play, and it's easier to take that gamble if they're committed to the club and therefore we will ultimately benefit from them getting that experience with us.

I'd rather Nourry played hardball. I think in the long term it's better that we're seen as a businesslike club.

Jack Draper storms into semi-final of US Open
at 09:41 5 Sep 2024

I'm not an expert but there have been some complaints about how they change the balls from tournament to tournament making it difficult to adjust. Also the timing of the Grand Slams means you're adjusting from clay to grass to hard court in a short space of time without really a chance to properly aclimatise and I'm guessing the ball reacts differently across different tournaments.

Emma was also a precocious talent, playing junior GSs at the age of 15, so playing against 18 year olds who whacked the ball.

I think she's trying to manage her injuries by not playing so much. Her power is one of her big strengths so she can't really dial it down too much but maybe she needs to learn to get more cheap points, get to the net more and finish it off earlier. As I say I don't know enough about it to really say more.

You would have presumed wrong.

Kournikova had to retire because of a back injury (herniated disk). She still plays in charity matches but couldn't manage the rigours of the tour.

Emma hasn't been able to reach earlier heights because she had three surgeries last year. From what the press writes about her she'd been sitting in a chair eating grapes and dangling her promotional jewellery off her wrist. In reality she's been building herself up to start playing again. I actually saw her myself at the National Tennis Centre last year having to play with children's balls to protect her wrists.

She only does 20 days promotion work a year which is easily fitted in around her tennis commitments. All tennis players do promotion work - as do footballers.

Her injuries are hard to come back from (two wrist injuries and an ankle injury) so she has to manage them carefully, hence not playing every possible tournament. She got it wrong this summer by not playing before the US Open (which she admits) but it's a balancing act with these injuries.

My son says there's huge wads of cash in basketball so it sounds more like he left us for greater things rather than any aggro with QPR.

The internet gremlins deleted my post.

Anyhow in short he's had massive potential for a while - final of junior Wimbledon at age of only 16, beat top ten players in men's game etc. But had niggling injuries which hampered him from reaching the top in the last couple of years although he did reach top 30 last year.

Should be top 20 in the world after this tournament.

Seems like a very nice lad - loves his grandad etc.

Likely to play Sinner - world number 1 - in the semis which I can't see him winning but it's been a fabulous tournament for him - hasn't dropped a set yet.

Palace cup tickets
at 19:34 4 Sep 2024

Maybe they're just thinking they've already rewarded loyal fans by paying millions of pounds of their own money buying/loaning in some really exciting new players.

I feel pretty good about the management team at the moment. It seems a funny time to moan about them.

You get next to nothing in the EFL Cup - £10,000 plus 45% of the gate receipts. Anything they can recoup from these tickets will be ploughed back into the club. As Stowmarket says, some of that reduction would go to away fans in any case.

I don't think you can compare a Premiership Club playing against much lower opposition with us playing against a Premiership Club.

The thing is though if you're paying those sort of transfer fees you'll also be paying masssive wages, surely? So if they don't go up from the Championship they could be in trouble I'm guessing.

Theatres do it too. I've bought tickets for £70 that ended up £200 on the week before for an in-demand show.

Yes, at times there are some totally batshit views but if we reach a consensus it can be relevant - like someone being a lazy arse. However, surely anyone could tell that SA can't shoot if they'd watched him play? Maybe they bought him largely as a disruptor/for his pace rather than as an out and out goal scorer?

Expiring contracts
at 12:02 1 Sep 2024

I think that's a mistake at his age. He could have continued to be invested in by the club and had a loan to develop that bit further. Also he's going to get a better chance of playing in the first team than at other clubs but it's almost always bad news when a family member interferes in your career, and the dad seems very chatty online.

Yes that was my big beef about him, the switching off thing for large parts of the game. Which you may suck up for a while if you're going to benefit later from the experience he's gaining but not if he's a loan player where you want them to hit the ground running.

Laird on the other hand just can't be bothered I think. Another one with lots of talent but jogs around too much of the time.

He's not even making the squad and is presumably not injured as he's played in the cup games. You just can't be carrying players and Laird, despite his undoubted ability, just doesn't put in a shift either. At least Lyndon works his socks off despite his limitations.

I thought he did okay just needs to impose himself a bit more. In the first half I hardly noticed him. True that he'll take time to adapt to the physicality and pace of the Championship. Celar also did for the first couple of games but I thought he looked more effectiive yesterday when he came on. Also Lloyd is used to having more time on the ball in the Development squad, you can tell he feels rushed but the intensity is so much higher in the Championship so it will take a while to adapt.

Me too.

He always makes me imagine someone who'd offer to come round your house and put up a few picture frames and do your flatpack wardrobe and wouldn't have any screws left over and only want a cup of tea in return and maybe a biscuit, although he shouldn't do really...

'Mark Warburton really liked penalty shoot outs. Not in a disrespectful way, far from it'

Almost as if he was in the room. Thanks for this line. LOL.
