I wonder what the attendance was. The Gallowgate End rather sparsely populated. When did the roof disappear at the Leazes End? I noticed there were no railings at the front. You could just run on to the pitch-ax a few of them did at the end. Thanks for putting this up. A great trip down memory lane. |

Went to the first game at Wembley and a Gisnts game in NY. It’s not for me. Goes on too long and you can’t really see what’s going on. Also in both cases the game just petered out as the winning side wasted time. And it was bond jarring cold in NY and poured down at Wembley. Baseball is my US sport. Ticked up 5 parks now and I love it. |
| Forum Reply | First Cinema you saw a film in? at 10:49 4 Sep 2024
Somewhere in Brighton (we were visiting grandparents in Seaford) in 1964 or thereabouts for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It was the first film my mother had ever seen as well. |

Placed a £1bet at a work event in the 1998 World Cup- England to beat Egypt 2-0 and Shearer to score first. Collected £28. That was the last football bet I ever placed. Or ever will place, come to that. David Elleray, Alan Smith (the Arsenal one) and Garry Nelson were the guests. All really nice guys. That was a great day. |

The equaliser against Sheffield United was not a bad one to sign off with. He’s no Marco Van Basten but I always appreciated the effort he put in. Good luck to him. |

Lots of great drives in the Scottish Highlands but perhaps my favourite is the drive in up the A82 from Glasgow. Wherever you are going to end up, this is always the exciting prelude to any trip there. |

I couldn’t finish The Hobbit. Got about 300 pages in and realised I couldn’t care less about any of the characters. Don’t start me on Lord of the Rings either (I quite liked the films though). I disagree with the earlier poster who dissed War and Peace. One of my all time favourites. When I first read it I sat up to 3 am every night for a week. I’d then wake up the following morning with the book lying on the floor next to the bed and would have to go back 50 pages to where I remembered getting to. |

| Forum Reply | England vs some other team. Euros Semi Final match thread. at 15:50 8 Jul 2024
I went to all of the Wembley games in Euro 96. There are some weird parallels with that tournament, from my perspective. I am thinking primarily of how we started badly and slowly improved (in both tournaments). It has taken us a bit longer to hit our straps this time though (compared to 1996).Now we are in the semis and there has not been a really convincing performance yet (but I have to say Switzerland were well organised and only the new improved penalty taking got us over the line). Now we have to play top teams and if we can win those two games, it will be a testament to Southgate’s management. He can leave at the top and his knighthood will have been well earned. I think we can do it. I would be really fed up though if we lose to NL and Weghorst scores. |
| Forum Thread | Who is going down this season? at 10:57 26 Jun 2024
Looks like a strong league to me. My relegation tips are; Blackburn-escaped last season but time has run out for them Plymouth-second season syndrome Oxford-one promoted team usually goes straight down and they are it. |

The Golf magic article used the word ‘hole’ when in British English, that would be ‘scrape’. |

Rule 16.1.e applies. Free drop if it is ‘known or virtually certain’ that the ball has entered the rabbit hole. If this is not the case then stroke and distance penalty under rule 18.2 |

I’m looking forward to some Portillo moments. The Tories deserve a kicking for Brexit and the Lettuce. It would be funny though if Lib Dem’s become the official opposition. That would give Ed Davey 6 questions at PMQ’s and whoever ends up as Tory leader with 2. |

Don’t think Wilkins was capped while with us (although he should have been). Have to insert John Gregory instead. |

This was great stuff. I used to go there in the late 60’s (my mother would not let me go to HQ-all those nasty rough boys in Shepherd’s Bush). It was 2/6 through the boys turnstile, 6d. for the programme and 3d. each way on the bus from Boston Manor. I used to be given 4/- for the day, so had 6d. to spend on sweets. The crowd was around 4,000 or so except for one match against Aldershot (I think) who were chasing promotion. It was 10,000 that day. I used be right at the front of that big roofed stand. I was amazed when I went back years later (might have been a pre-season game) to see that it was no longer there. |
| Forum Reply | Serbia 🇷🇸 v England 🏴 Match Thread at 09:06 17 Jun 2024
Serbia were no mugs and we had to earn the right to play our game. We did enough, mainly because Bellingham was on another planet compared to everyone else. For me Foden was the biggest disappointment. I would have like to see Eze on for the last 15 or so. I didn’t see the point of bringing Mainoo on. Guehi was a big plus. I don’t think he out a foot wrong. The big thing is that it is a win. Our record in the first game in tournaments is apparently terrible. But Southgate had won the last two. I remember Euro 96-that started with a really dull draw against Switzerland. It turned out alright in the end though. Hopefully this time will be the same. |

I drove across Germany in 2016. No tolls, and in the quieter areas no speed limits either. I stuck to around 140kmh but it was quite something to see the Mercs and Beemers whizz by at 250. Keep your eyes on your rear view mirror. They also have the unnerving habit of driving right up your exhaust pipe when they want to pass. Where speed limits apply the speed cameras are everywhere. Also in the Netherlands. Have fun!! |
