They only turn up in numbers for games inside the M25 anyway so it’s not like thousands of diehards are missing out. They can still walk around Shepherds Bush in CP jumpers and spend the £38 on gear.

Smyth now on. I’m more worried about him getting injured on this Sunday league pitch than anything.

Just stuck it on. I was in Bulgaria not long ago and ended up going to their qualifier with Lithuania- they were atrocious.

Lavery who played against us for Cambridge just came on. That’s the level of the squad sadly. Bradley is a decent player and they put him in midfield to get him involved more than at full-back. The defence should be ok with Hume, Ballard, McNair and Lewis and Isaac Price is a kid who went from Everton to Standard Liege so presumably quite promising. Up front and central midfield they’re extremely weak.

It was a reasonably good chance but I never felt there was much chance of Ireland getting back into it and the last ten minutes or so was very comfortable once the subs had come on and we were closer to adding another than they were to scoring.

Transfer rumours 2024

Maybe a matter of principle if there are a few players in a similar situation hoping for payoffs. Or a stand-off where neither side blinked. Or possibly he’s not quite as keen to leave as he makes out.

Recent tournaments would suggest we’re clearly a top five side in Europe. For the little they’re worth the world rankings have us fourth in the world and third in Europe.

The other teams in this group will probably prove me wrong but I think there’s the makings of a plucky underdog kind of team there like the Ireland of old albeit with no stars. A shame Ferguson has faded but he’s very young.

Some good attacking options now and a proper goalkeeper but that central midfield is way off it unless I’ve forgotten someone who was missing today. Manager needs to be aggressive and play to the strengths of Ogbene, Szmodics and Idah/Ferguson.

I’m not disagreeing but it takes time to step up. If Grealish plays like he did today then you can’t argue about him being picked.

I love Eze as much as anyone and in time I think he can be a fine England player but he hasn’t shown a lot for England as yet. He’s a reasonably slow starter when he takes a step up (even if playing the likes of Ireland is hardly a step up from Prem football) and there’s maybe a bit of imposter syndrome in there which will go over time. Grealish played like the old Grealish before Guardiola made him a passing robot.

Thought Grealish was excellent.

Just smashed one into the top corner against 40,000 or so booing you and you don’t celebrate. Not for me, Clive.

Not up against much but nice to see a team playing to score goals. A bold strategy.

Watching Adomah toil as a late sub as Walsall seek an equaliser at an empty MK bowl. Life has been better.

He speaks well. Dealt with the ridiculous Greenwood question as well as one could. Nobody with an IQ above 80 cares if he sings the anthem. Such a weird thing in this country that we have to find an angle to attack whoever manages the national team.

Given the players with mysterious knocks it’s a good, interesting squad. Would’ve been easy to play it safe.

Guessing but you probably need to add him to your ‘network’ assuming you haven’t as you would to buy away tickets together.

More likely just email the Box Office and they’re normally good at sorting this stuff.

Palace cup tickets

Well yes obviously but in the context of it being 2024 where everything is horrifically expensive and any form of ‘entertainment’ particularly so I’m happy to pay £22.50 for this. £41.50 including the booking fee for Sheff U, £35.50 for Luton etc. I paid £37.50 to visit a zoo yesterday (was a good zoo but still), £16 for a Conference South game recently. Don’t get me started on the price of actually getting to any of these things.

It’s mad relative to the disposable income of the average wage earner I agree but less mad to me than those examples. Also Palace would have had some say in it I believe.

Is it? Think it’s about right. If I was picking between that and a midweek against Hull for £33 or whatever it is now a couple of weeks later I’d be doing the Palace game.

Think it’ll be close to full. Can’t remember the crowd for Everton a few years ago but it felt like it was rocking.

Blackburn Away
at 12:58 3 Sep 2024

Did a lunchtime kick-off at Blackburn 2/3 years ago and some things are best not repeated.

A good away game to introduce kids to though from the point of view of being trouble-free and even with some good form it’ll only be the true hardcore schlepping up there. Fair to say it’s not the most exciting of places for food and drink beforehand.

In fact it was my first away- 1-0 defeat, Shearer diving for a penalty.

Very early to judge. A poor start from Willock in a pretty mediocre team and he’ll never likely be the player he was pre-injury but I don’t think he’s necessarily going to be a dud signing.

Armstrong I’m still convinced assuming they play 4-3-3 or some variation of it is best suited on the left. Back in the 4-4-2 days he’d be effective with an old-fashioned gnarly number nine but not a lone striker or at least not ready to be one at this level. I still think he can have a successful career and if he’s on a long contract there could probably do with a loan if they think he’s a striker.

Dozzell- meh. Can’t see it, never have. Not sure Pompey fans will have much time for a ‘baller’ who doesn’t score/run/tackle in exchange for two swazzy passes a season

When the alternative was Armstrong they were probably just about right.
