Seventies. Raw, no messing football. Could still be sh*t but great days out*

*rose-tinted specs could well be involved here

Sourhamptons toughest pub

What was the Shirley Warren pub ‘Tudors’ called before the Gregorys took it over and it changed name? There were some iffy places around that way.

Another ‘hotpot’ not for the faint of heart could be the ‘notorious‘ Juniper Berry, a licquorice-allsorts type of a boozer and one that was usually lively.

City Centre pubs were mostly best at weekends/match days as so many people were bombed out during/after the war, out to the new council estates springing up around Southampton’s outskirts. Some estate pubs were pretty much ‘tread carefully’ if you weren’t known.

Lord Louis and the Southerner worthy of a mention.

But if you put all car drivers in lock-down you wouldn't have '93 deaths per day' in vehicle accidents.

Relax the rules and allow Americans to start moving around again and watch the aggressive strain in the East finds its way across the States to the 'mild' West. It's a tough call but until a vaccine is available.......

Best lower league games

Yep '78 saw some big followings, estimated 15,000 at Orient, 10,000 at Luton and Fulham, were the standouts. Back in those days we could take thousands away one week and then the following week, just a few hundred if north of Brum! Forest and West Brom away in the cup mid-late 70s saw 10,000 away followings.

This one states 58,000

there's others out there, including one of their fan websites, if you want to dirty yourself looking, that state 59,000

I'm lucky enough to have done just about all of those away games with the big followings, we used to go everywhere particularly in the 70s and 80s, in recent times in the lower leagues, any London games were a good day out, Orient and Millwall were standouts.

The harsh reality for them is that traditionally it's always taken outsiders/neutrals to help them fill their ground. Highest capacity around 59,000, only ever got 2 crowds a shade over 50k in their greatest era. Most had disappeared a couple of years after that brief fling with success.

And, as we all know the difference between myth and truth, that was only because they let in thousands of servicemen based in the area for free and as our Saints-supporting grandads used to tell us, loads used to travel down unchallenged to fratton for a chance to see those famous names of the visiting teams they'd only ever read about in the papers.

these Red Bull rumours

Everton is just a district in Liverpool which they'll be moving out of in the near future and Grimsby play their home games in Cleethorpes. And while Millwall is north of the Thames on the Isle of Dogs they play south of the river at Bermondsey. I'm boring myself now.....

Geniuses from Southampton
at 21:40 12 Mar 2020

Southampton firm 'Gordon Brothers' were geniuses for their development of the first spinnaker sail, it was that good that portsea island named their most iconic structure after it. They must love us down there.

"Thomas “Dutch” Diaper (1839-1902) was one of the most successful captains of the mid nineteenth century. Together with William Gordon, of Gordon Brothers, Southampton sail makers, he is credited with the development of the first spinnaker sail which made it’s debut on the NIOBE under “Dutch” Diaper’s command in June 1865"

VAR decisions have probably evened out for us over the season but we'll always harp back to the Ings shout at Anfield for comparison. The inconsistents are the ball-grippers.

And then how much will Kat demand for her share?

With talk of a possible world recession to follow as a result of China's latest export, there won't be too many rushing in to spunk £millions on middling football clubs.

Chapel End next season
at 19:14 19 Feb 2020

The only way they could get your more boisterous element to relocate to the Chapel (and at the risk of alienating current ST Chapel holders), is first rename it (maybe this is why the present lot sit so quietly, they think they're in church), make that entire end rail-seating and make it clear that if you prefer to sit go elsewhere. Then increase the bar areas and make it so fans at that end can also go out and use the 'Fans Zone' for drinking and smoking at halftime.

And then make it cheap tickets, particularly for U22-25s.

If it was me, I'd also put on free buses to the stadium from the housing estates of Millbrook, Shirley Warren, The Flowers, Thornhill, Weston, etc. (but unfortunately, exactly the type of fan this club doesn't want).

*some reports suggest rail-seating could be introduced within 2 years.

Safe Standing
at 07:25 12 Feb 2020

You're right, it will be one seat out, one 'safe-standing' in, no likely increase in capacity.

I'd like to see it in the hope it would add a bit of atmosphere to the dead stadiums of England but as it will just as likely be the same crowd currently passively standing in seated areas, I have my doubts.
