First NFL Game

My old company had Texas roots and connections, we went and stayed at Hotel Drover in the Stockyards for a company meeting last year. That place is amazing.

Defence and special teams it's the Chicago way.

Even with the most hyped QB coming in that Chicago have ever had, good to see we're holding true to our roots.

But with all the time and resources spent on the offence this off-season that was a massive letdown. Game 1, and it's a win, so can't over react but shows what the learning curve is going to be like for Williams.

Or even more easily solved by saying kickoff will take place 30 seconds after the goal is awarded. If you're not back in your own half to defend then you do so at your own risk.

Dynamic Pricing
at 03:53 3 Sep 2024

The crazy thing about that though is that actual match day ticket prices are such a tiny part of their revenue now and decreasing. I suppose there's all the flags and other touristy nonsense that casual fans buy but even so. With all the TV money, the overseas tours, the global merchandise, why screw over the people that actually helped you make you who you are for an extra 1% of revenue when you're making more money than anyone would have dreamed possible 20 years ago?

As for the ticket gouging fiasco, it beggars belief that this has been going on for YEARS and nobody has shown the least bit of interest in actually sorting it out. I suppose they have an interest not to...

I'm afraid I have this one sewn up. $19 for a Coors Light at The Sphere in Vegas. Mind you even a bottle of water was $7

Buying a bunch of hotels works in monopoly, maybe Birmingham owners just got confused about what game they were playing?

I'm not going to judge them too hardly on Cannon. A player that theoretically is a higher level than we'd be able to get otherwise, only available to us because of the situation.

We took a punt on a high risk high reward signing which hasn't worked out so far. It happens. Not that different in principle to getting Sam Field or 1st time Charlie Austin because of their injury histories (worked out well) vs signing someone like Richard Ord for the same reason (categorically did not work out well)

Celar needs to get his head over the ball, that's two he's skied from ten yards out or less. Beautiful touch to create the chance though

If I recall correctly the Brentford owner also has a sports betting business which gives him access to their internal statistics/analytics package which is further advanced than anything available on the open market because that's something betting companies invest obscene amounts of money in due to what's at stake.

So while we may be behind from a time perspective, our ceiling in terms of the analytics is also lower than theirs. Which is a depressing thought.

I'm assuming at your job though there werent hundreds of thousands of people interested in knowing that and an entire industry built around generating advertising dollars by feeding the speculation, true if they can get it, made up if not.

That's the difference for me, there's no requirement for them to share this stuff, but you can make an argument that sharing some details is going to do less harm than not doing so and having people make up their own nonsense which is consumed as if it's the truth (but by the nature of pay-per-click journalism, likely to be more sensationalized)

Sports Bar in LA. - Mind Blown.
at 17:59 19 Aug 2024

Completely fair. I've benefited for sure but at the expense of the people actually putting in disproportionate time and money to support the team. And for what it's worth I 100% agree with you that this is to the detriment of the game.

The point I was trying, badly, to make was that I can actually see the appeal of this kind of thing to certain fans. It's not a replacement for the games but it's the closest some people can get....unfortunately there are so many more of those people than the ones that attend the games that somewhere along the line some people more concerned with their wallets than football made the decision that that is where the money was...

I'm going to be a dissenting opinion here.

I used to have season tickets at QPR, then moved to the US. I physically can't go to the games obviously and I'm extremely grateful I can now watch them at all which wasn't the case when I first moved out here.

Given the choice most days, I'll watch on my own, or occasionally meet up with the small number of other fans in the area at a pub, so totally aligned with the person who said that.

However... There is nothing quite like the feeling of being there, with thousands of other fans, all cheering for the same thing. At the game is best, but if you can't do that, maybe this is the next closest thing. Think about the times they show the England games with the big screens, or Wimbledon on Henman Hill (is it still called that?). Is it as good as being there? Of course not. But in some ways it is the closest you can get if you can't physically be there (price/location/timing whatever)

Scouting Analytics - Would this show up?
at 03:36 19 Aug 2024

"But my question is, would something like his failure to track a runner leading to a good chance (and in this case, a goal) show up in the regular analytics that tend to get compiled? Is that the kind of thing that is/can be measured? Genuinely curious - there are plenty on here who have more insight into scouting analysis, would love to know your thoughts."

Probably. Whether it's at this level or just higher, players have sensors/chips on them these days as does the ball. I'm sure there's a whole bunch of stuff which looks at distance to ball distance to other players all sorts of things. Picking out the patterns in that and what those patterns mean in a football sense is really the modern day equivalent of scouting.

How much of that we have access to I have no idea.
