Prolific striker
at 04:35 10 Sep 2024

The majority of those were probably 10 minute appearances though. I know he got caught off-side a lot but I thought he was a bit unlucky for us and looked more of a striker than Dykes when he came on at times.

Well if refusing to sign a contract if they are any good is going to become the norm then maybe its best that they are late developers.

When you realised there was no meaning to life and no God
at 22:11 5 Sep 2024

When you get to the bottom of the barrel and you see that there is nothing there

Or when you look in the mirror upon waking up and see a gaunt, withered ghost looking back at you

if your peckish....

Agreed on crumpets. They are versatile as an egg. Do the job morning, noon or night. Plus with marmite on (only marmite) I believe they are not too fatty so you can do them last thing at night without knowing that they are going to line your arteries. Crumpets with marmite on and tea; it does the job when you come in from a night out

Oh, I forgot to say, they also don't wake you up at 4 a.m. like a curry or other fragrant dish can.

Summer holiday book recommendations
at 19:05 5 Sep 2024

If it's not too late, and if you are going somewhere with a chance of a lot of rain, I would recommend Sapiens. It is such a good book. It basically explains how the economic, religious, social and political transformations which the species has lived through are to a large extent by products of our animal instincts and need to create institutions which assist in allowing us to cope with the old time honoured fight or flight scenario. After reading the chapters on how we create these economic, religious, social and political machines to enable us to connect it really sheds so much light on the world we live in. Amazing book.

Random irritations..
at 20:26 2 Sep 2024

Friends/guests who rearrange things when they stay in your house.

I know it sounds a bit Jack Dee/Jo Brand but it is totally infuriating.

Nearly as bad as when you get a tradesman round to quote for something and you know he's ripping you off, he knows he's ripping you, but you get beaten on your own home soil and end up paying the f*cker.

Defending crosses
at 14:06 1 Sep 2024

Good analysis on the crosses. Been like that for a long time - since Bidwell at least. I always thought the entire back four should shuffle across. Works at Sunday League level. I'm guessing pro defenders don't have bobbles, divots and shanks to help them out like on a Sunday morning.

I think Marti is being a bit sutbborn here keeping Marsden on. This game is being played at 100 mph - but Marsden isn't.

A truly powerful moment in sport, not for the normal reasons:

'He needs to go out on loan'.

The notion that any 2nd year Development Squad player who is not yet ready for the 1st team will automatically be readied for the 1st team by being packed off for months to a lower League team.

Contrary to the fact that most loans end with the player sitting on the bench for most games and subsequently being released, any youngster who has been around our Development Squad for a while 'needs to go out on loan'.

It's a complete fix. What's the point of having a Cup if the European teams are kept apart so they all go through ?

Dykes sold apparently
at 20:53 28 Aug 2024

Sad to see him go. I personally rated him more than others on here. Always thought he worked hard and now and again had good no. 9 instincts. Not 100% convinced that either of our current strikers will be any more prolific although Frey is putting himself about well up there so far.

The jury is out here in my living room. Marti seems to base quite a lot on the Spanish model. I don't see Celar having the invention or instincts to play that role at all.

From memory Marti puts about 8 1st team starters and 3 fringe players in in Cup games.

I reckon:

Walsh
Dunne
Paal
EDB
JCS
Morrison
Lloyd
Varane
Kolli
Saito
Celar

Subs:

Nardi
Santos
Cannon
Colback
Field
Madsen
Frey
Dembele
Talla

Totally and utterly ridiculous to point the finger at Field for the goal. If anyone is doing that they seriously need to look at the bigger picture.

I thought he was OK. Seemed well up with the game and was managing it well. Only real gripe would be the 4 minutes of injury time. Should have been at leat 6 for all the stoppages (red card, fouls, falling to the floor etc etc)
