Frey’s big start, Madsen’s quiet wins, Field’s conundrum - Column
at 18:20 11 Sep 2024

Thank you for my blue & white fix for today.

1. Frey. I think he compares (favorably) to Chaz Austin. As as been much commented he was out of shape, but hopefully now has some oxygen therapy. I really do think the providers (Dembele, Saito, Paal et al) will provide him with plenty of opportunities. I also hope/expect Celar is more counterpart than partner.

2. Marti rotation: Based on a years sample, I estimate that Mats, Field, Colback, Varane will rotate in that MF triangle. I think Hayden was not as critical on the field as we often seem to remember him. I would dare say Field's play at the end of the season contributed FAR more. But it is about the whole recipe.

3. Contracts: EVERY team has pending free agents. But I do hope Paal gets a good offer and stays. As opposed to getting a take it or leave it.

Guys-
I just don't see a place for Hayden especially with Mads and Varane added.

Curious. I just saw Dwight Gayle linked to Hibs.

Given that he is 34, just had a tour with Derby which was praised even with a disappointing injury hit campaign.

I just wanted to add my opinion that he could represent a low cost-high yield impact striking option off the bench, and might like to stay near home.

Plymouth see red; QPR suffer déjà vu – Report
at 19:13 26 Aug 2024

yes! Together they brought too many defenders in the penalty area and diffused the threat so apparent earlier on. With Kolli on the prior shape was restored. I was very disappointed that Saito came off. And I agree that KD is more effective centrally.

In my humble observation, we are very similar to most teams punching at our weight. Usually linked to similar players and with similar challenges. Indeed a big lol for the fact Bosun is now a Stoke player. I hope this new influx of players DOES yield more return than the post-Eze class of Willock , Kerman and Andre.

Comment should be re- directed to a new thread.

From my observations of Marti, he is not afraid to throw players out there and see what they do.
Case 1, Richard’s got a look once, now he is on loan. Case2, EDB has fit in the 1st 15 and rotates in or makes the bench. Case 3, Walsh is now the back-up keeper who I hope sees plenty of time as the starter. Tuck and Kolli both have starter and both are arguably in need of extra time at a level below, ala Kelman.

I do like the argument made that Jack Colback could be the one sacrificed to make room for the newbie.

Should Dykes play alongside Field in midfield
at 02:10 19 Aug 2024

I have been highly critical of Dykes. But what he did yesterday expressed our frustration.
All we want is that ! The finish was epic. In measure consider Michy and Jan both had similar opportunities. Maybe we have OUR Lyndon back!!

To add to the conversation about the re-constituted MF: I see Field sitting in front of the CBs, then Varane in the pivot, with Karaoke ahead of him. Field then can protect Varane who can use his passing range. No doubt there will be a rotation (Home vs away).

Ditto. I first saw him scoring against Germany. And I thought he was a great find for us.
Congrats to him and hope he has a good season.

Bladies and Gentlemen match thread
at 18:22 17 Aug 2024

Very grateful to see the game and I write this in a Marti-generated’ good spirit!

I liked Varane. I thought as the parachuters resorted to beating up on QPR especially KDem. In the first half they got all the calls. But starting with the push on Paal, all of a sudden calls came QPRs way. Also, the higher powers took DJ out and Smythe made a dramatic difference playing as a RW not a midfielder. Dembele showed that #10 we have been crying for able to run the ball out of midfield. Saito was also a dramatic impact on the Leftside.

Cometh the optimist!

Chair - what's the story?
at 18:26 16 Aug 2024

Even with the comment released. I would be surprised if Leeds do not bid for him. Per the gossip columns, Leeds are looking at other players but given the prices quoted and in Leeds purse I would not be surprised if there was a last minute bid.

Agree with several here that the peripheral evidence is highly suggestive. Leeds just got a bid in for Rutter so that's close to 80M in funds and this Leeds teams NEEDS a LW like Chair who is proven at this level. 10M would be a steal.

Boinging Baggies deliver Rangers reality check – Report
at 18:09 12 Aug 2024

Actually,
I think that IS the legit response. I think questions about signings and transfers SHOULD be left at the CEO's feet. And as Marti says he has let them know his thoughts. Marti (unlike many) is getting good returns out of his assets, even given some weak spots are still there. But, we have also seen him expose the weak spots.

Agree totally with the point this is not Marti's 1st eleven. I would go further to say Walsh might get a shot at the #1 jersey.

PS: WB beat QPR to the new italian LB yet the incumbent was stellar on Sat.

The Hoops vs The Baggies Match Thread
at 20:14 11 Aug 2024

I am in agreement with this point of view. Both flanks were exposed but Smyth is deployed out of his strength. The back four were not afforded enough cover. The ‘6’ position has been often singled out last year and in preseason and hopefully Varane can be that solution. Without singling out Paal, I thought WB were able to get through the middle 3rd to easily.

This is interesting, and Thanjs Terry for adding in what I wanted to say. Hopefully it gets sorted, and he can get to playing again. This thread begs a few more questions including whether he CAN be an asset at RB. The next is what is the likelihood that his contract is voided.

Weighing in.
The thing I see missing alot in the thread is that last year we recruited for a different style of play (?) and now Marti & Co. have a completely different ethos. The guys that are gone are guys that didnt 'fit' (or wanted out). I think the Achilles heel in the plan is still molding all the pieces. I think Marti tried Willock, Hodge, and others in the role of ball carrier/ link-up specialist and none really worked. Hopefully Varane is that guy.
