Exactly. He may not be the quickest, but he knows how to play centre forward. His movement and anticipation is good. It was there for his first goal on his debut vs Norwich. You could see it then.

This season he is match fit and match sharp. He wasn’t last season. He’d not played football for over 6 months when he joined us. And then he picked up a niggle.

He’s fit now. He’s that bit quicker and sharper, and he’s so physical. Very hard to manhandle him. So the ball sticks well. And then he looks a proper striker in the box.

Note he did his own pre-season on his own dime, I believe, for two weeks before our pre-season started. The bloke is really making an effort. He’s the right sort.

He’s the same animal; he’s just match fit. Game nous was always there, movement and anticipation always there, he just wasn’t fit and sharp.

Michi F*cking Frey! Eat some of that, Luton.

Madsen is absolutely coasting here.

He has touched it once this half where he preceded to play a hospital pass backwards to Paal.

He began the half by not anticipating a very good headed lay off from Frey. Otherwise, not in the game at all. Oh, and again. This time a chest lay off lost.

No idea who is marking Morris at corners now. Was Colback earlier. Either way it’s pretty unforgivable not to mark their no. 9 properly.

Yeah, he’s done a good job. Great bit of play to set up Dembele with a chance he should have scored, certainly hit the target with at the very least.

We’re not getting enough support near to him. Madsen has to take the blame for that.

Yeah, good first 15 and now we are on the ropes.

Madsen is having an awful game. He’s receiving decent passes - not perfect ones - which he appears completely unable to trap. His balance looks poor. He’s giving Frey hardly any support and not moving enough when our defence has it to offer a ball out to feet. Complete passenger so far.

Lloyd needs to be a bit more careful with the ball too. Can’t keep turning it over.

He was much better today. Tidy in the build up. Used his body better to regain possession. He looked more assured througout.

It was positive today. There is a player in there. Needs a bit of luck in front of goal and needs to build a better relationship with teammates in terms of reading/understanding what each of them are going to do.

But strong signs of improvement.

I still think Frey is the first choice, mind.

If Field and Madsen are the first choice, and Varane, and EBD as back up, PLUS Colback around too, you have 5 players for 2 spots. We can’t sign a 6th! We also have Tuck and Aoraha who need to develop and get game time. I think both could be good enough to make it.

I expect Varane and EBD to play today, Saito and Lloyd, and Cela.

My guess is:

Walsh
Paal
JCS
Morrison
Dunne
Varane
EBD
Lloyd
Kolli
Saito
Celar

Arse. Really wanted that lad. Liverpool fans rate him very highly. Tore it up at Dundee last season winning PotY.

As I saw it. Dembele and Field in the team of the week.

Goals, Shots, XG - QPR laboured to score?
at 10:27 26 Aug 2024

Burnley are the outlier there, I’d suggest, not us. So possible (likely) results and score lines have flattered them. We obviously deserved to beat Fulham comfortably as the xG stats indicate, so we arguably could be see as currently being a tad hard done by when it comes to points on the board.

It’s incredibly earlier in the season and therefore a small sample size. If we average 18 shots a game, we will score goals.

Need to wait to see how the land lies after about 10 games.

Except he passed forwards loads yesterday. He was the one playing the ball about yesterday, not Madsen.

Smyth
at 10:46 25 Aug 2024

Agree. I bring a mate who is a neutral several times a season as he lives about 100 yards from the ground. He is really likes Smyth. We all know he doesn’t score or assist enough for his pace and the positions he finds himself in. However, he does worry defenders. He gets into those positions in the first place. He wins us corners and dangerous free kicks. I don’t think he should be a first choice when everyone is fit, but as a sub/back up in the squad, I think he’s very much worth having around. I definitely think he’s good enough to play in the Championship. He’s just not starter level for a top half club. He won’t be a starter for us when everyone is fit and available, I suspect. But he should always be in the matchday squad. He is useful. Never underestimate pace and how it helps all our other players.

How the hell is anyone going after Field?! He was superb. Hit the post and the keeper made a great save from another header. Did all the dirty work and started almost all out attacks. His ball playing was very good, but the number of blocks and tackles he made was outstanding.

And he was playing with a new boy who was clearly off the pace.

4 minutes.

He didn’t play 7 mins. Clock finished at 95.16 to my memory.

At least 4 minutes short. I recorded 1min 30 of time off in injury time alone, plus everything that went before. Should have been 9-10 min injury time.

Quite.

I thought Frey was very good. Scored. Led the line well. Held it up and makes some good runs.

On that point, I do think he might be the better player than Celar. He bends his runs far better than Celar. Celar’s runs on recent evidence are vertical. That requires sh*t defending or a great pass. Frey is slower but times and bends his runs better. Perhaps Celar is still getting up to speed. But Frey’s first game against Norwich last year you saw an (unfit) natural striker make two great beat post runs ahead of match fit centre halves and score one and graze the post on the other. He’s now fitter. He’s scored 2 in 4. I’m confident he’ll score goals.

Dykes is our best striker.
at 18:32 24 Aug 2024

And that is a good thing. Strikers should be intimidating. I played centre half (at a rubbish level, obvs). But Frey is the one I’d least like to face of the 3. I’d fancy my ability to bully Dykes and Celar (as a professional centre half). Frey won’t get bullied. It’ll create second balls for Dembele and Saito.

How you could grade Field and Madsen the same is beyond me. One was off the pace the entire game and played some wayward passes.

The other was everywhere winning tackles, making blocks, and the one spreading the ball forward and wide when we attacked. 8 and 5 would be more appropriate. People hugely undervalue what Field does when the oppo have it.

Quite.

They were probably attractive women, wearing tight clothing, Kensal. Can’t blame him.

I get the whole “innocent until guilty” but if those privy to the details (BBC and his agency) seem willing to drop him immediately, let’s perhaps assume he’s in the wrong and not the recipients of whatever he has sent them. It’s not hard. The world hasn’t gone mad. Bloke behaves like a dick and gets found out. Maybe accept it for what it is? Not an arrestable offence but he hasn’t been arrested. The career impact is his problem. He deserves no sympathy.
