International break matches thread

It's childish stuff, Brian. Not as if we didn't notice she died. Either you're a monarchist, in which case the whole point of the thing is that as soon as one dies you get another; or (like most of us IMO) you're not too fussed about royalty either way.

It'd be much more cutting (and nastier) if they were rude about David Attenborough or Michael Palin.

But England fans used to be terrible for booing foreign national anthems at Wembley (I think it's not so bad recently).

All flag-shagging is nonsense, international sport doesn't have to be like that. England are playing Sri Lanka at cricket right now and there's not a hint of any of that rubbish.

I've said this before, but Hoos and Ferdinand did important work moving us on from the shambles of the Redknapp (and before) era and left the club better than they found it.

I'm not trying to rake up o6ld ground here - my point is that in many spheres of life a new broom makes a lot of the improvement early on, when the need for change is most obvious and it's about correcting clear errors from the past. Making the right call about the unknowns is tougher, especially if you'e QPR and basically you only have the money to get it right first time. Plus, people get worn down.

Missed the opportunity to read out a list of famous Liechtensteinians and top it off with "your boys took a hell of a beating", though.

He did a great job, both defensively and by tipping the balance from us having to defend Luton attacks to us putting pressure on them

What we still didn't see - which isn't necessarily his fault - was chances made for other players, accurate crosses, or strikes on goal.

Until we do I think DMM is right - excellent impact sub in the last half hr, not necessarily first choice to start.

I think that's probably right.

The vibes are pretty good after the two Luton results but the actual performances were more "work in progress". Some of the new signings from abroad look a little undercooked but improving by the game, so I think a bit more time on the training ground together should help.

Got to a admit that as a fan I'd love another match ASAP!

You'd think Celar would be, since he was in Slovenia's squad in the summer.

(I'm presuming they're playing, I'm not an avid follower of the Slovenia national side.)

Just been reminded by another thread of an old and slightly niche one:

"Languid": correct spelling and pronunciation of Leroy Fer's first name.

"Fillery - he flatters to deceive" a Spurs fan mate of mine told me 40 years ago, almost to the day.

Didn't know what it meant, still bloody don't. So much for education.

Feels like the appropriate place to note that he scored against Them.

The guy who he vaguely reminds me of is John Gregory.

Might just be the haircut, mind!

Still, we could do worse.

Think maybe some of us in the happy-clapper wing are a little oversensitive after some pretty weird written off of some of the new signings in the first few games.

Don't think that's happening in this thread.

Apart from the Jordon Mutch comment - which is pretty hard to engage with either way, it's just a hunch - I'm not seeing any bitching or over-criticism here.

It was a mixed performance, I don't think anyone could say it was perfect - pretty much everyone is saying that there's good reasons to concentrate more on the positives.

The 4, the 2 and the 1 ✅ , but the 3??

Was wondering about your last point. When he first broke into the side Eze was 10 and Chair was wider.

I don't know if he's always really wanted that "10" position, or he's just stepped up because someone had to when Ebs left.

He and Eze clearly really got on, it may depend on how he and Dembele bond as much as anything else.

Where I disagree is over whether there are signs we will get it right.

I suppose it depends on how soon you expect it to click, maybe I have lower expectations on that.

I don't think it's all about "the right combination" - not saying that doesn't matter, I just think as fans we tend to focus on team selection (cos we can all play at that) instead of things like coaching and working with the players.

As you've noted, we have plenty of decent players for the roles, I think it's about getting them to understand their place in the system, which needs to work with interchangeable players, and building the understanding between players so they start to instinctively anticipate each others moves.

The big one for me is fitting Dembele and Chair into the same starting 11. Like you say, Dembele looks wasted out wide; would you play Chair there?

Or would Dembele's wide play be more effective if there was someone more creative (ie Chair) pulling the opposition apart in the middle, too?

Long post warning but I don't think the one man show thing is fair.

Firstly, Frey's rampage started right after Smyth replaced Lloyd ie when we were playing a lone striker - it's not surprising if he was the focus.

But of course the first goal was actually scored by Madsen. Now I'm not going to pretend Madsen has made a brilliant start and I gather he was poor in the first half last night (which I didn't see) but fact is he was in the right place (as he was in stoppage time in the cup) and this time he scored. As Clive pointed out when he signed for us, part of the point of him is we need more goals from midfield and after two starts he's begun to deliver.

When Celar replaced Frey his lay-off to Andersen should have produced a goal. Andersen himself was at least in the right area and has the track record so I don't think we need to worry he won't contribute when used.

Smyth was usefully busy albeit without producing any chances - as a sub he did what was needed and helped shift the balance of the game. Varane also decent when he came on.

Dunne as ever a threat at the far post and unlucky not to score: a handy bonus from a full-back.

We shouldn't go overboard, and there will be tougher tests, but when you consider that the core of our attacking players (Dembele, Madsen, Frey himself, Lloyd, Celar, Varane, Saito) are either new signings (mostly from different leagues with different styles of play and pre-season timetables) or (Frey and Lloyd) barely played last year I don't think it's unreasonable to look at the best parts of last night as a sign of what we should expect more consistently in a month or so.

Add in the fact that Chair is still probably our best attacker and is now presumably ours at least until Christmas; also that Dembele can play better than he did for most of last night, and I think we've got the makings of an attack with potential (I'm not putting it stronger than that yet) to be very exciting at this level, and the manager and assistant to make it happen.

If Frey turns out to do most of the actual scoring as a big, muscly old-fashioned gnarly No 9, well, that's what we've been crying out for for years IMO.

I don't want to divert into the "other" thread, but to be blunt so far this season he is doing everything that we wanted Dykes to do, but he didn't.

I make him first choice CF and I think both Celar and Lloyd will benefit from that, giving them time.

second half...luton away.
at 22:14 30 Aug 2024

I didn't find a stream until 2nd half, but I was very impressed with everyone. Match winning performance from Frey and Dunne titanic in defence. But lots of other good stuff - Smyth doing a really good job of making a nuisance of himself, Madsen took his goal really well, thought Celar was unlucky not to get an assist for that pass to Andersen, Varane is growing into games and Nardi made a couple of crucial saves.

Think we can get quite a bit better too.
