Dunno. Maybe the club think football is at root about community and the least a club that pays out vast sums to footballers can do is run some youth teams, regardless of the benefit of the first team.

He's played well v Luton, Plymouth and Cambridge and scored in all three. In fact, he's scored in 3 out of the 4 games he's started this season.
Can't remember the last time we had a striker who scored at that rate?
But yes, early days.

Any fan wishing to kill joy in games by limiting what is and isn't a legitimate celebration in their opinion can be ejected from the ground and banned from football forever.

Otherwise, I agree with Bannister.

Well, you've just said what I said, so all good. Crowds went down because we weren't doing so well in the Championship, it had little to do with pricing - it was still not bad then - not until Briatore turned up with his boutique did they rocket. Then when we were top of the table under Briatore it was packed every week and the Aunt Nelly's took over this board begging for tickets, despite prices. We were fuller in L1 because we were winning. Not saying cheap tickets didn't help, but if you're not winning it won't make any difference.

If we were playing Orient, we'd be charging same as Brentford (as we did v Luton). If we were playing Brentford, no way would they be charging a tenner. It's not a comparable situation. As someone else said, we just charged a tenner for the Luton game and hardly anyone turned up, so it's not really better or smarter.

I love Jim, but that stuff is so disingenuous. It was cheap firstly because the club was on its actual knees and the football was absolutely terrible for YEARS. They had no other choice, or no one would have gone. We were in league one! And then it got full, yes, I'm sure partly because it was a good deal (and it really was, I remember at one stage doing a survey where I said to them - you can charge a bit more actually, this is really cheap, amd many felt the same) but cheap prices don't fill grounds. Winning teams fill grounds, end of. If we had been bottom of that league I don't care if it was 50p to get in, we'd have been getting crowds of 8000.

They've set the price below £20 for St holders (yes, booking fee is irritating) for a third round tie against local prem opposition. If we don't get a decent gate for that I'll be shocked. The tickets *are* cheaper.

Absolute disgrace. the PL's fault for how it was worded, but it's really a technicality.
The whole thing is a joke now.

Clive has never given a 10. I don't agree with his reasoning for that, which is something like, 'if you give a 10, you've got nowhere to go' - but if you never give a 10, then surely there's nowhere to go when you give a 9? And also, you can give a 10, and someone play better and they just get a 10 too?
Anyway, Clive loves these arguments about ratings when he's spent so much time on the prose ;)
My question would probably be, was Frey's performance on a level with Freeman v Leeds? If not, it's not a 9 by Clive's formula. A 9 for Clive is pretty much perfect, won the game on your own stuff. He can probably tell you, but I think only Freeman, Adel and maybe Eze have had 9s from him?

He needs to make sure he reads your posts this season so he can work out how to get it sorted a bit more quickly doesn't he? ;)

Marti actually said Madsen was angry about his own display, to be fair, so criticism not wrong, especially if he has the same opinion - which is healthy of him.

The player he reminds me most of is Phil Billing. Also Danish, of course.

Defending crosses
at 11:44 1 Sep 2024

I do love the football dichotomy of set pieces.
If you concede from a set piece, it's like the biggest crime. The inference is, set pieces are easiest to defend.
Yet, if you don't score from set pieces you're useless, because set pieces offer a strong chance of scoring a goal.

Defending crosses
at 09:13 1 Sep 2024

Agree, Bri.
Luton are a team that put in a lot of crosses, and at times last season that was a huge weakness for us. But in both games, I thought we defended very well. With the number of balls they put in, particularly coming from the crossing specialist Doughty, you will not get through a game without conceding chances. This regular narrative of narrowed eyes and stroked chins and murmurs of ‘getting away with one’ etc is all well and good, but the reality of the sport in this division is that other teams will create chances, and chances often come from mistakes or small miscalculations from the defending team, that’s just inevitable in football (see City yesterday).

Lets just try and remember we were playing a team who were in the prem a few weeks ago at a time when we nearly got relegated to the third tier.
Some better teams WILL outplay us for sections of games, as will some not soo good teams. That is football.

It's equally dangerous to watch a couple of games and go 'we've got a gem here', but there are some early signs this season with Frey that suggest having some patience with players is not a bad thing. Madsen may or may not be a good signing, but you don't have to watch much to see the guy can pass a football beautifully - I don't get the Mutch comparison, completely different sort of player.
