Winter fuel allowance on 19:44 - Sep 5 by max936 | This Carbon Neutral/Green Energy pee's me right off its a massive con, can anyone tell me what difference we are gonna make when we produce less than 0.1 or it might even be 0.01% of carbon emissions compared to most of the other Countries, until the likes of China, Russia, India and the good old US of A plus others get their acts together its a lost cause. We always got to be seen as leaders, we are virtually little more than a pin head on the Worlds map. its a joke and another excuse to rob the hardworking Tax Payer of yet more money |
We produce less than 1% of the CO2 globally, China's output has increased year on year but even 5 years ago they were, well this, https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-57018837 27% of global greenhouse emissions. More than the rest of the "developed world" put together. What we do is a fart in a big thunderstrom and makes absolutely no difference. it's a very expensive waste of money.

Just stop oil don't seem to protest in China and Russia, what we contribute to carbon emissions is a storm in a tea cup compared to those 2

Winter fuel allowance on 17:33 - Sep 10 with 1194 views | AnotherJohn | Unsurprisingly the Labour Government easily won the vote to defeat the opposition motion to halt the means testing of the WFA. Only one Labour MP who had not previously been suspended over another issue voted for the opposition motion, while 52 did not vote, mainly because their absence was authorised. Among those who voted against, meaning they supported the Labour policy, are: Torsten Bell (Swansea West) Carolyn Harris (Swansea East and Neath) Stephen Kinnock (Aberafan Maesteg) Nia Griffith (Llanelli) Absences included: Tonia Antoniazzi (Gower)

Maybe local pensioners who have lost their WFA and will struggle should visit their local surgery and ask their MP wtf they were thinking about. I firmly believe if MPs, many new to the job realised that they would get a rough ride from their constituents, they would think more carefully before making stupid decisions.

Bell's Facebook page contains a few negative messages, but not a peep from him about WFA and the way he cast his vote. One of the main recent items he has posted features him holding up a "Refugees are welcome here" sign in a vigil in town outside McDonalds. Perhaps shows where his priorities lie. At face value, the absence of an impact assessment seems at odds with expected practice when new legislation is introduced. https://erskinemay.parliament.uk/section/4986/impact-assessment/ However, the change is being made in the form of secondary legislation, meaning via the introduction of a regulation using powers granted under existing primary legislation (the Social Security Contributions and Benefits Act 1992 and other related social security Acts). The regulation is: The Social Fund Winter Fuel Payment (Amendment) Regulations 2024. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2024/869/introduction/made https://lordslibrary.parliament.uk/changes-to-winter-fuel-payments-the-social-fu The Government will probably argue that as no new Bill is involved, then no impact assessment is necessary. Even so, this will be unusual and highly controversial. Some will say the Government is showing a cavalier disregard for a process that Labour itself has used to hold the last Government to account on many occasions. [Post edited 14 Sep 3:14]

The critics say the Government tried to mitigate the effects of a FOI request by slipping out their response on a Friday night. An equality analysis is less comprehensive than an impact assessment. The impact of curtailing the WFA still looks awful, especially for older disabled people. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/government-accused-of-trying-to-hide-horri [Post edited 15 Sep 7:45]

Am I being too simplistic. Don't the Government already have the data. HMRC have the income on their database. Works and Pensions have the data of benefits, pension credit etc. Comparing the 2 should show who is entitled but not claiming. It could also show people on maybe less than what could be a new cut off figure of £15,000, so then not having to go to the local council for help with heating. The ones falling between the cracks could then be dealt on an individual basis than swamping a whole outdated system.

They always revert back to what they inherited and so called black holes, she has turned her back on her previous principles, Shocking! They all do it though so its not unique to just Labour, they make promises they know they are not gonna keep, she's yet another charlatan politician, absolute joke People like Martin Lewis we need as politicians and he's not perfect, but at least he can see wants needed, although his principles could change if he was in Government.

Personally it think the cut off should be the point where you start paying income tax £12,570. How can someone not earning enough to pay tax be denied WFA. So simple to implement as well just cross reference the pension list to the inland revenue list and pay the money.

Clive, you talking common sense mun, Governments don't do common sense, what you suggest is easily doable, but it would mean that same would have to do some work when its easier to let people themselves find out and then apply to what they think they're entitled to.

Whatever the cut off point the government must have enough data flying around to just pay to a large majority of of those entitled but not claiming. HMRC are quick enough to change a tax code when circumstances change. Why the need to complicate things by sending letters out, when they know that for whatever reasons these people can’t handle official documents. One of the last comments in that clip that people shouldn’t worry as if they are entitled they will get it back dated. Does she really think people will just heat their homes on the promise that IF they are entitled they will get the money after the time they need to pay their bills.

It always sounds better to say that they are working with other agencies and councils. It sounds so in depth and professional. Problem is it’s of their own making.
