I liked ODB. But as you say, very fleeting. Saw Wu-Tang at Hammersmith Apollo and found it really underwhelming, which I subsequently learned I should've gone in expecting anyway.
Best / Worst live Hip Hop shows ?
I saw Klashnekoff in Sheffield about 7 or 8 years back and tbh he was fine considering there was literally about 5 of us in the audience, and it was all a bit sad and desperate. Big Narstie was on after and somehow (Don't ask me) drew like 10x the crowd (Still pretty small time really). Obviously, Klashnekoff, even if only for The Sagas Of.... is 1 million times the artist Big Narstie is. But whatever. Also done a Roots Manuva gig at Troxy (Weird venue, kind of loved it, but unlikely to go back) where he basically forgot all his lyrics and kept disappearing off stage for reasons I wouldn't want to speculate on. Made some great music tho, so whatever, enjoy it Rodney.
One of my favourites was TaskForce at Jazz Cafe, back when I was young/stupid/energetic enough to get standing tickets. I still go occasionally, but it's upstairs only these days, with a plate of food & bottle of Savvy B. I was also in Deal Real one of the nights it seemed half of the UK Hip hop scene was there, either on the open mic or outside doing a cypher. This was after the move to Carnaby St.....So maybe not the Real Deal Real to some.....But it was to me.

Interesting: I think GZA’s Liquid Swords and Grandmasters, Ghostface’s Ironman and Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx are the best Wu solo albums. Ghostface’s albums with Adrian Younge are great too: Twelve Reasons To Die etc.

If you haven’t seen it the Wu tang American saga produce by GZA is a great watch I’m about half way through the 2nd series. 1st season a bit slow with scene setting etc but it’s really getting going now

Listened to Hip Hop since I was 10 (86), much more eclectic now, but Hip Hop and Dancehall are my passion. I could listen to 'Both Sides Now' by Joni Mitchel, followed by 'Nina mi Nina' by Ninjaman, followed by '6 in the morning' by Ice T... its frustrating for my kids when they are in the car :D

I guess the problem with it today is how broad it all is. Hip hop will mean different things to different people. You've got the original hip hop era, followed by gangsta rap, then Crunk & more commercialism....Then we split between UK and US....UK we get Grime, then start mixing in more Drum & bass, Basslines......End up at Trap. In the US they went through that weird phase of Trap and Mumble rap which completely lost me. But I dunno if I buy the Hip Hop was better in......arguments. Every era has good & bad, and the current era has some good artists. The standard for serious artists these days is pretty high. Certainly in the UK, people like Ocean Wisdom or Loyle Carner are clearly good enough to have been around in any era. And in the US I like Kendrick Lamar more than I've ever liked Jay Z or Nas (And I like both). I found the recent beef between Kendrick and Drake deeply satisfying as its finally proven something I've been saying for 10+ years, that Kendrick is on another level while Drake is wimpy music for simple people
I find a lot of the older stuff quite overrated, from Sugarhill Gang era through to Gangsta Rap era. And some of the post 00s stuff is underrated, presumably because everybody could see the commercialism by then. And the Crunk stuff was all a bit unrelatable for us Brits.
With so much other content to consume, mainly podcasts and audiobooks, I find myself listening to less music than ever recently. And when I do I'm going through a bit of an Indie phase atm (I mean for like, the last year now) - Need to get back on it
Speaking of Pharcyde, I heard this edit on a Nightmares On Wax soundcloud 'Wax Da Box' mix years ago, but it took me absolutely ages to find it because I didn't know the name of the Marcia Aitken tune. Absolutely love this, the edit is almost too good to be true
