Walking Shoes 22:11 - Mar 25 with 3970 views | CateLeBonR | I'm a keen walker and I've been searching for a decent pair of shoes to wear. I'm not in a desperate hurry as what I have now should see me through this season. Not many shops left or people to ask for advice so I've been looking online. Seems to be the same shoes available on identical looking websites. Nothing really grabbing me. I've a £100 to spend, I'm not fussed about gore tex or any fancy stuff. Any hikers on here?
Walking Shoes on 22:35 - Mar 25 with 3063 views | stowmarketrange | Don’t buy walking boots online is my one tip.You need to try them on properly and get advice from somebody with experience.I bought my 1st pair 13 years ago from a proper hiking shop and they lasted years. The 2nd pair were bought online and they were not as good,or as comfortable. There are still a few shops still around that can help you.
Walking Shoes on 22:37 - Mar 25 with 3059 views | MrSheen | I’m on my second pair of Merrell Forestbound ankle boots (J034767). I do a lot of daily walking (average 8-10 km a day) to work or round Richmond Park but I’ve been hiking with them too. At least 3,000 miles in them in the last 18 months so far, no leaks, no blisters, good for at least another six months. I was advised to choose Merrells as I have wide feet, absolutely delighted with them. Might even order another pair in case they’re discontinued before they wear out. Available online £100-130.
Walking Shoes on 22:39 - Mar 25 with 3050 views | colinallcars | Yes, I've done a fair bit including Offa's Dyke. The shoes I always went for were Scarpa. I'm not really up to it these days and am confined to river/canal walks invariably ending up in the pub. I currently have a good pair of Barbour boots and a good pair of M&S that were made in India.

Whenever my in-laws are down from oop north, I tell 'em that Richmond Park was Henry V111's back garden. I went on the Beverley Brook walk once - not the most taxing walk. Was it the Stag that proclaimed it was “the only pub on the Beverley Brook walk” Is it still there ?

Not sure I know a Stag. Nearer Wimbledon maybe? My favourite Park story is that Asquith took time off from the First World War to drive his teenage mistress to assignations there, often after a few drinks.
Walking Shoes on 23:16 - Mar 25 with 2936 views | ted_hendrix | Mrs Ted uses Cotswold Outdoor, there are plenty of their stores open 7 day's a week. They are a bloody good shop (depending on the staff I suppose) but she swears by them (In a manner of speaking) She has walked pretty much most of the Camino de Santiago and only has the final three week walk to the Atlantic Ocean to complete the walk. She's currently doing a daily charity walk right up to Easter (around ten miles a day)

I used to live in Roehampton and Richmond Park was where we spent most of our summer days.Or Wimbledon Common. What a great place to live and explore as kids.
Walking Shoes on 23:28 - Mar 25 with 2921 views | Boston | Any new footwear is uncomfortable until broken in. I've never invested in a purpose made walking boot, just slowly beat up my work ones until they're ready for moderate trail walking. I'm a dog type of bloke, we head out every day, regardless of weather. [Post edited 25 Mar 2023 23:36]

I've been erring towards Merrell again. I have a pair of Moab's which I bought about 4-5 years ago and use all the time. However I've found them terrible in even moderate wet weather and poor for ventilation as well strangely. So I can't wear them in summer or in the wet which is quite restrictive. They're very comfortable though and I've worn them nearly everyday for work for the last 6 months. Thanks for the tip. They'd see similar use with me and I've always liked the look of them.

I was thinking about a trip to the Welsh borders before the West Brom game but decided on a canal walk instead. Scarpa boots look great but not really what I'm after.

Same as me never invested in a boot before. I've had several years of Mountain Warehouse Field shoes (which you can usually pick up for about £60) but getting a bit bored with them now for no good reason. [Post edited 25 Mar 2023 23:55]

Walking Shoes on 05:19 - Mar 26 with 2762 views | joe90 | Best walking shoes I’ve had (still have) are a pair of gore tex Salomon’s. They were £50 from sports direct. I’ve walked all over the Lake District, Snowdonia, Yorkshire three peaks, three castles and numerous other day trips in them. Had them for over 5 years. I’ve never had problems with them, no blisters etc. My advice is get something with gore tex so they’re waterproof. Depending on your weight consider how much support you need. My walking shoes are like trainers. Salomon are a really good brand. Have a look at these: https://www.sportsshoes.com/product/sal3996/salomon-trailster-2-gore~tex-trail-r [Post edited 26 Mar 2023 5:21]

Walking Shoes on 08:59 - Mar 26 with 2657 views | hubble | My friends swear by vivobarefoot and you get a 100 day free trial with them: https://www.vivobarefoot.com/uk/tracker-ii-fg-mens-ss22 Over your price limit though. When my last hiking boots split on a trip to the Black Mountains I had to resort to a pair of wellies I had in the boot of my car. Walked uphill and down dale in them and they were great! I had the driest feet of anyone in our group and not a single blister. Think they cost me 15 quid.

Sorry, it's Stag's Head - situated on Priest's Bridge south of Barnes Common with Beverley Brook adjacent. It used to be a bit dank but now under new ownership and smartened up. [Post edited 26 Mar 2023 9:44]

Walking Shoes on 13:26 - Mar 26 with 2410 views | BrianMcCarthy | https://www.elverys.ie/Elverys/Men/Footwear/Hiking-/Merrell-MOAB-3-GTX-Mens-Hiki I got a pair of these for €100 in the local shop in Cork as they're a couple of years old fashion-wise. Merrell again, very popular so they should be available in most shops. Strong with good ankle support, I have smashed nerves in my toes and these protect them very well. I've done about 2000km in them, mostly treadmill, and they're still good as new and the feet are still in good shape. 10/10 recommendation.

Walking Shoes on 13:37 - Mar 26 with 2388 views | hubble | The trouble with low ankle boots, like several of you have recommended, is that if you're hiking anywhere boggy or marshy or muddy you're going to get a boot full of water... or worse.

True. Or pebbles, which cause blisters. I prefer boots in any kind of dodgy ground or weather. Heavier, but worth it.

Walking Shoes on 17:32 - Mar 26 with 2144 views | PlanetHonneywood | A lot depends on the terrain/trek you're doing. If you're doing a trek that's not to difficult and/or the terrain is yielding, I've always found Merrells the best. Well made, comfortable, good grip and durable. I've done Hadrians Aall, Great Glen Way and Cornwall in them; like slippers. I'm getting (trying too) some training in to start Santiago de Compostela later this year. Reason for throwing this in, is that I think the best suggestion made thus far, whatever shoe you get, break them in first! I'm going for more of a hiking boot and took them out today for a few kms. Bit more walking required before I do a big yomp. Not sure if its been said above, but shoes are one thing, but socks are every bit as important. Don't scrimp on cost, and invest in a good few pairs. I use 'smartwool' socks and they add real comfort. Definitely

Walking Shoes on 17:46 - Mar 26 with 2132 views | R_from_afar | I bought some Merrell waterproof hiking boots from Millets about four years ago. The staff were very helpful and advised me that Merrell is a good brand to pick if you have broad feet, which I do. My previous pair of boots were DB and were very comfortable but eventually fell apart after over 20 years of use The Merrell ones are very comfortable too - they claim to have an air cushioned sole - but I don't believe they are fully waterproof. I get round that by wearing SealSkinz waterproof and breathable socks. I am on my second pair of those but then the first pair did last well over 20 years. As others have said, do go to a shop to try them on and be sure to wear the exact configuration of socks and insoles you will be using when out walking. One tip someone told me is to wear socks for a short while before wearing them on a long walk. Totally clean socks can be a bit rough, wearing them for a while softens them up.
