Listening to the French last night and the Welsh "Land of My fathers" this afternoon, makes me think about national anthems , whose got a good one and who hasn't.
I name France and Wales has two that are in my opinion brilliant when blasted out. Amazing to hear the Welsh sing theirs today. I name ours, as a in my opinion a bloody awful one, due to it not being about our country but a song about a something that doesn't exist, in my opinion, saving a thing that should not exist in my opinion. Now when we have something like Jerususlam as our English anthem that will be much better and something I will gladly join in with.
I am Not a communist , but proud democratic green socialist and republican, believing in true democracy including an elected head of state and elected second chamber of government.
Also GSTQ sounds like a dirge even when excellent football fans do their best to make the best out of a very bad job.

It's not a great Anthem I agree, but just going off topic I think the Queen is looking wonderful. Dressed in Lemon yesterday and Cabbage Green today, God bless her and the Royal Family. The trooping of the colours was excellent, as always.

What would you have as our anthem if it was up to you?
Have to say I don't get Jerusalem at all. Find it dull. But then, the idea of an a national 'anthem' is obviously not about the catchy-ness of the tune, but about the call to the tribe. Which I don't feel either.
What has Jerusalem got to do with England? Its in Israel and its a jewish place. Why not have its a long way to Tipperary..Thats not in England neither. Be perfect.

Can we have 'The Lambeth Walk''?
You can choose whatever you want. That's certainly better than GSTQ in my opinion.
As it stands many of us can't really relate to GSTQ as many of the population are either atheist and or don't believe in the monarchy. So let's have an anthem that celebrates the country, like most countries do.

I'll have John Cage's 4′33″.
Is there not a more British thing than the silence that greets the achievement of someone else.

You make me laugh, you honestly believe many of the populations are not in favour of the monarchy. You sound like a Politician, if you keep repeating the same thing you think the general public will believe you. It's called being out of touch with reality.
Let's get rid of everything, there's quite a few different minority groups would bloody love that, you play right into their hands. The IRA had a good go. The Royal Family aren't doing any harm and more than pay for themselves. We wouldn't have anything left if it was up to some. There aren't many things that we can relate too when it comes to being British, the Royal Family is one.

Abso-bloody-lutley. Mark has covered quite a lot of the political spectrum in his time. Currently he is a green republican.

Well support for getting rid of the monarchy and becoming a true democracy is at about 25% , and that figure could rise if we ever had a referendum on the subject.
Many who oppose the "Un democratic EU ", support the monarchy, a very un democratic institution, like the Lords. I believe in an elected head of state and an elected second chamber.
How can working class people struggling to make ends meet despite working all week relate to a privilidged elite?
If people want to support them fair enough, but those who are against them have the right to be, and will continue to support calls for an improved democracy.
No, I have put myself on ballot papers in various elections to enable people to vote for a Green candidate, with the knowledge that I will not become an elected politician.

You are totally allowed to go off topic on this site.

Sorry wrong. I have been in just TWO political parties, Labour for 25 years and now Greens for three years, during which time I have remained a Socialist believing in green , issues as well as believing in an elected head of state. Through it all since I started work at 16 yo I have been a proud Trade Unionist.
So if you are going to state my political spectrum, at least get it right.
Aye and a good effort in the last election, 215 votes I think.
Not very good vote, but not expected after ZERO campaign within the ward, made sure that there was someone to vote for other than the three governing parties of Rochdale politics since the formation of Rochdale MBC, and for Green policies.
