Probably the best one in my time was the Cup victory in 2003, although our 9-3 victory in 1965/66 must have been superb, Chivers 4 goals, Paine 2, Sydenham 2 & George O'Brien. Bizarrely Wolves scored 1st in the 1st minute In 1980/81 Saints were missing the injured Kevin Keegan but still won 4-2, Steve Moran scoring the 4th goal in only his 2nd appearance for the club, both as a late sub made it 2 goals out of the 2 games, Mike McCartney, Graham Baker & Chris Nicholl |

From an older generation , Saints beat Wolves 9-3 at the Dell in September 1965 at the start of our promotion season to the top flight. The following season we signed the goalkeeper who had played for Wolves that day Dave MacLaren, after Campbell Forsyth broke his leg He would play 22 games for the club in that first season in Division 1 before we signed Eric Martin. A facial injury affected his eyesight and he was forced to retire from professional football after just a season at the club, I suspect that the fans back then would have complained about the club wasting £7,500 |

The full details arent through yet but this statement has just been released by the club, more to follow. Southport Football Club can today confirm that they have parted ways with first-team manager Jim Bentley and first-team coach Alan Morgan. Jim took over the club with the side rooted to the bottom of the National League North and turned the club’s fortunes around, steering us to a comfortable 16th place finish safely above the relegation zone. The Board of Directors would like to place on record their sincere thanks to Jim and Alan for their dedication and professionalism during their time at the club. Club Chairman Peter Mitchell said: “On behalf of everyone at Southport FC, I would like to express our gratitude to Jim and Alan for their hard work and commitment. They have conducted themselves with the utmost professionalism throughout Jim’s tenure, and we wish both every success in their future endeavours. “ The Men’s First Team will be overseen by David Morgan as the club undertakes the process of appointing a new management team which we hope to conclude as soon as possible. Any enquiries regarding the position should be directed to club COO Andy Burgess on andy.burgess@southportfc.net

That wasn't the question though was it ? I would agree with all 4, on number 5 losing to a Championship club 1-0 in the FA Cup 4th round is not the worst FA cup defeat we have had, I remember losing to 3rd Division Wrexham in 1974, now who was the manager for that one ? Yes Ings was injury prone during his time at Liverpool and in his first season at Burnley, but since 2018 when he joined Saints on loan, after playing 24 games out of the 36 he could have played in that season, he has not missed anymore than the average player through injury, so to answer your question yes things have improved drastically for him since he was in his mid 20's |

Ironically those 10 players mentioned were probably the ones that received the most stick from Saints fans on social media and this message board, during the period 2016-20. I think all were a little harshly judged, but if you were picking a team of whipping boys/scapegoats 2016-20 this would have been the foundation of it |

Why is this an example of Sport Republics detachment from reality ? Ings is not injury prone, the last time he was out for a prolonged period was during his season on loan with us, since then he has been pretty much available for every game not only with us, but Villa & West Ham. So to dismiss him just on perception is just not getting to the truth |

Seems to be touting himself about a bit, putting himself in the shop window, he must have agreed severance pay with Saints |

As I said in another thread. "We have to see if Sporrs is the man, if only because we have no other choice, this is the modern day, owners don't just leave because the fans chant "Sack the board" selling a football club is not easy, but you can walk away and not throw anymore money at it and the clubs that have that happen to them have major problems" Not disagreeing with your viewpoint, but I don't think they will be going anywhere soon, even if they wanted to. Saints don't have the monopoly on f*cking up, Leicester has supposedly great owners, so do Ipswich. yet they are in exactly the same position as us. |

I would keep Archer, Armstrong & Brereton Diaz, I think Onuachu will probably be sold to Turkey to get some money back on him. Ings has been fit and available for most of the last 6 years since he joined us permanently from Liverpool, so I don't think his injury record would be an issue. However as you say the first 3 are proven in the Championship and younger, so probably signing Ings not a priority unless one of them leaves. |

In fairness to Adam Blackmore he has usually called it as he sees it. No one is doubting that we will lose about half a dozen players for big money, but the problem is that being a Championship club means that you can't sign a £30 million player. Firstly there is the fact that a £30 million player will not want to play in the Championship and secondly wages, if you pay someone too much to get them to sign and you don't go up then you are stuck with a player that you can't sell only loan out. The record transfer fee in the Championship is £16 million when Burnley signed Mike Tresor in the summer of 2024. We have to look at the root cause of the problem, rather than just generalise, that was a lack of leadership in the boardroom, after relegation in 2023, we got in Jason Wilcox as director of football and we were stable, made a few good signings and won promotion. When he left the issue was that we didn't replace him, now we have Johann Spors, so it seems that we have addressed the biggest problem that we had last summer. No one can accuse the owners of not spending money, now it seems that they have finally woken up to the issues and are getting in professional people to get the club back on track. To say the club is rotten to the core from top to bottom is not true, we have owners who have been willing to spend money, but they have made mistakes, we have a CEO in Phil Parsons , who although has not been great on the footballing side of things, understandable because he didn't have the experience, but has put the commercial side of the club on a strong footing, perhaps not of interest to most of the fans, but without that side of things we can't move forward. Now hopefully Sporrs is the man to put the footballing side of things back on track. But it won't be £30 million signings, it will be £10 million ones who will get us out the Championship and also loan signings, that is the way to do it, so if you do get promoted then you are not burdened with a lot of players that you can't ship out and you can free up money for new Premier League signings. Our problem last summer was the manager and the signings he wanted such as Downes who were not Premier League class, we did make some very good signings such as Fernandes, Ramsdale even Ugochukwu on loan who was ignored By Martin. We have to see if Sporrs is the man, if only because we have no other choice, this is the modern day, owners don't just leave because the fans chant "Sack the board" selling a football club is not easy, but you can walk away and not throw anymore money at it and the clubs that have that happen to them have major problems |

The atmosphere is poor because Saints fans need to be next to the away fans to have them to bounce off. That has been the case now for 50 years, back in 1975, Saints fan migrated to both the Archers Road and West Stand terraces to be next to the away support. There have been brief times the Milton Road had vocal support in it for a while, but the main vocal support came from Under the East Stand, when the away fans were moved there, the Archers Road became the home end for the last 7 years or so of the Dell. So I am not surprised what has happened, most people who have been going for the last 50 years, could tell you that, we have not had a true home end without the away fans for half a century and the supporters are just not used to singing without the banter between the away fans |

A very winnable home game on Saturday, it has been an awful season, but perhaps the crowd can get behind the team on this one and we can get to the hallowed 12 point mark |
 | Forum Reply | Travelling apart after a game at 13:07 10 Mar 2025
This isnt unusual, after a game players are free to make their own way home, at many away games they stick with the club transport as it is quick and easy to get back to Southampton. But sometimes they do their own thing, Taylor Harwood Bellis for example might have stayed up in the North on Saturday to see family. The four you mentioned might have been doing something in London so found it quicker to get the train than go back to Southampton and then up to London. |

Stuart Armstrong will be 33 in a few weeks, he was not up to the Premier League and he wanted a final pay day at the end of his Saints contract. Things haven't gone great at Sheffield Wednesday so far, he has started 3 games ( Max time on pitch 70 mins) and come on as a sub in another 2, but he has suffered an injury and has missed the last 2 games and will probably be out for another month. |

1. Getting out of the centre of town to the ground about 1.15 was chaos, the queue for the special buses was 200 yards long, but there were a lot of buses so probably not a long wait. Taxis were even harder to find. 2. The away concourse is strange, you still have the old cramped bit, but behind it there is a big open concourse with nothing in it. 3. I have never seen so many stewards at a football match, most of them doing nothing, as we came out of the ground there was an unbroken line of stewards about 30 yards long with nothing behind them, they seemed to have no use at all. 4. Getting back into town about 6pm was just as bad, Anfield has little public transport that goes past the ground, the nearest train station is over a mile away and the nearest main bus routes about 1/2 mile away. 5. Liverpool fans from Merseyside are hacked off at the tourists, few of them have got tickets for the League cup final next week, apart from about 2,000 ring fenced die hards, the ballot was open to season tickets holders and members, meaning that a season ticket holder who had been to every game, had the same chance of a ticket for the final as a Liverpool fan in Australia who had never been to England let alone a Liverpool game |
