Moving to the USA? 23:10 - Nov 4 with 11062 viewsthame_hoops

I know a few here are ex-pats living in the US now, Mark in Baltimore to spring a name.

How easy is it to move to the US, get a visa etc ?

I met a girl in Fort Worth recently and I’ve been over twice to see her, just wondered what others have experienced etc?

I know Google is free but people here are always a fountain of knowledge and experience

A personal viewpoint, based on recent events, I would wait a year to see how life pans out for the US and especially for women in Ohio, Florida and Texas. Moving to the northern East Coast states might feel more like what you're used to.

Did she not know before that she was your girlfriend?

Ha well I just assumed she was my girlfriend, but she needed clarification and wanted me to ask her. Apparently that’s what you do in the dating world now. So many guys won’t commit and don’t want titles apparently, so they try keep it casual. It’s all new to me so when I was over for Thanksgiving, I officially asked if she’d be my girlfriend so it’s ‘official’ ( I know I know). i’m 47 years old, it sounds like we’re teenagers ha ha ha.

When I used to travel over at this time of the year, I found it highly advantageous price wise to depart before December 18th, returning Jan 3rd. Of course, many would not have the opportunity to be over for that long, but I really enjoyed my Christmas visit.

Her Children go to see their dad in Tennessee for nine days, so we had to fit it around that. Her return flight in economy from DFW was £2500. My return flight back with her on the 27th December is £1300. Previously I’ve paid anything from £700-£900. Crazy.

What are these strange utterings you earth people call face time?

Stuck in an hotel the weekend watching original Startrek and Tom Baker Dr Who.
Davros going on about being masters of the universe etc and Baker replying, yea, yea, yea, heard that all before.

Serious question, is there a realistic prospect of a K1 being granted after only a few months’ relationship?

I don’t know. I’m going to speak to an immigration lawyer. I mean, it’s completely genuine and not a ruse. But need to get it right if that’s what we want to do. Other people seem to manage, so why not us?

Not trying to sound negative, just genuinely interested. 15 years or so ago I was dating an American girl and back then the K1 requirement was for a more long term relationship so I could imagine you ending up in the slow line waiting a few years for an answer 😐

I suppose it will all pivot on whether the billionaires are there to drain the swamp or the treasury. Time will tell.

As a matter of interest, what's your occupation? Are you able to seamlessly slip into the same line over here?

Might be better to say you met somewhere and not on a dating app. I dunno. Immigration aren’t as suspicious regarding English people. Well they weren’t.

The challenge is always immigration at the airports. Don’t know their own rules. I’ve only met one decent one who spoke to me normally and had no sign of a lobotomy. Know the rules better then them.

Never, ever, had an issue entering or departing. And that would be on hundreds of occasions.

I'd agree. Never ever had an issue. In fact one time I made a last second decision to give my carry-on to my fiancee to take through immigration because she was an American and my line looked like it was going to be a couple of hours. I thought I had my passport in my pocket but turns out it was in the carry-on. They were pretty good about it and let me frantically wave and try and flag her down and bring it over once I finally got to the booth.

Maybe it depends on the airport, but the big ones, DFW, ORD, JFK etc. It can be a nightmare getting through but that's more staffing levels rather than competence.

Good luck Thames, and congrats. I have a great immigration lawyer if you need one and happen to be doing any of this from Chicago.

Last time I went I was detained for two hours in secondary immigration despite paying for an ESTA.
No explanation given as to why.

Off topic from this lovely Christmas romance, but the last two immigration experiences I've had at JFK are downright embarrassing in terms of how long its taken, and that's just the US citizen/green card line.

Total mess, 1 person at the desk, no working e-gates (do they even still exist?). What is it, $200 for 'global entry'? and they were just as stuck.

Near the end of my 1 hour wait in October the guy behind me mumbled to the beleaguered official if armed forces can get priority - this is after him standing there the whole time for some reason. He gets asked if he's got proof and pulls out his police ID to which he got a LOAD of colourful push-back from all of us around him - was the most enjoyable part of the experience really.

And the foreign passport holder line/queue is far too often 3 or 4 times longer. People arriving in the richest country in the world waiting an age just to get through to their bags. Embarrassing.

August 2016 we went to New York and we were queueing for around three hours in immigration. There were one or two people on the desk for foreign citizens but they kept letting through American citizens to use our line as overflow. And then a load of troops came in and went to the front. That’s the worst experience I’ve had.

Boston- i’m a director of a water treatment company (legionnaires disease and bacterial testing mostly). That’s all I’ve done since college. Health and safety laws in America differ massively. I think I would try facilities management and work my way up, kind of. Or try and slot straight in to water treatment.

A friend of my GF is in construction recruitment at high-level, he said he’d help me out with my CV etc

It’s exciting, I can’t wait to show her London and Oxfordshire over the next week
