Disunited Britain 09:07 - May 8 with 6240 views | PentyrchJack | At a time when we are commemorating VE Day as one nation, why on earth can't Johnson, Sturgeon and Drakeford coordinate their respective announcements on COVID 19 lockdown arrangements? I understand the political imperatives for devolution but surely they should all be sufficiently mature to synchronise both the content and timing of the message? Churchill oversaw the greatest victory by working with our allies and this bunch of morons today can't even synchronise their watches.

Disunited Britain on 17:34 - May 8 by Kilkennyjack | Absolutely not. The UK govt should not be prioritising England over the other nations of the UK. Thats not their job. (In fact, i am not sure they have done so ?). I know for a fact Welsh NHS has moved to PPE kit to English NHS areas where they have been short of PPE kit. Absolutely as they should. And vice versa. The likes of Boris would say competition is good and drives up good public services ... [Post edited 8 May 2020 17:36]

Matt Hancock hijacked the Welsh government order for tests a few weeks ago as Westminster were napping after Wales had placed an order with Swiss firm Roche. They were told that they would have to give the order to England or risk veing delisted as a supplier to the much bigger English NHS. Wales were then given a smaller amount than what they had ordered by England. https://www.thenational.scot/news/18349832.coronavirus-uk-control-devolved-natio
Disunited Britain on 20:36 - May 8 with 1427 views | Glossolalia | Wouldn't call it disunited. More of a reflection of our devolved powers as distinct nations, along with the differing ways Covid has spread in the UK. Not sure if it's an issue of maturity. Johnson clearly wants to get the weekend out of the way before declaring any relaxations to the restrictions in place. And as he governs, in this matter, far more people than Drakeford does, that's understandable. Maybe Drakeford thought that telling Wales before the weekend may lift spirits a bit. Personally, the sooner news is given out, the better. As for the media calling it 'tension' between the powers at play, it's typical hogwash. It's a devolved issue; expect differences in time and rules. Happy VE day all. My grandfather landed on D day and I proudly have his medals. EDIT: As i write this, around 10 of my neighbours are on the pavement, drinking and being rather noisy. I'm sure the VE veterans would offer the advice of 'follow the damn rules'. I'm not a stickler but both myself and my housemate have work tomorrow. Oh to be in Neath. [Post edited 8 May 2020 21:58]

Disunited Britain on 09:31 - May 8 by Kilkennyjack | I am guessing because the UK numbers remain dreadful and so if you call this one wrong then 10’s of 1000’s could die. Comrade Nicola and Professor Mark Drakeford are putting the health of people first , and therefore favour a low risk next step at a time when the numbers are better. Johnson is probably just bored now, he does not like detail, and as the rest of the world - with better numbers - starts to unlock then why not UK as well ? Also his moneyed supporters favour wealth over health. Its a very positive thing that Boris cant simply make a reckless decision without any meaningful debate. Its too important. Follow the numbers, and the real science. Not Cummings science. |
I have to say that Drakesford's announcement was a damp squib given all the fuss the made about it beforehand.

Disunited Britain on 22:04 - May 8 with 1353 views | Glossolalia | Unfortunately Pentyrch, there were never gonna be wholesale changes. The media, especially the red-top rags, seemed to think freedom would be ours again come Monday. So much exposure to sensationalism and hyperbole often blinds people from appreciating the little things in life. In this instance, it's the reopening of some shops and the ability to exercise outside more than once a day. This thing is going to inch by, and the sooner we realise that, the more we can feel some satisfaction about the small but meaningful changes that come our way. [Post edited 8 May 2020 22:13]

Disunited Britain on 14:04 - May 8 by TenbySwan | I have followed this very closely. Since the early days Westminster were making announcements totally disregarding and without consulting the devolved administrations in Scotland and Wales. They.have hijacked PPE and tests orders made by Wales and threatened the suppliers that they would be banned from Supplying the much bigger NHS in England if they supplied Wales. They have done everything they can to try and embarrass the devolved administrations to try and make themselves look good and one of the main reasons without doubt is the Assembly elections next year. Sturgeon and Drakeford are now on the front foot. (Quite rightly), and protecting the interests of their Countries. [Post edited 8 May 2020 14:08]

I'm not being funny but I don't think the UK Govt give a s**t about the Assembly elections currently.

Disunited Britain on 19:30 - May 8 by exiledclaseboy | The messaging and briefing coming from Westminster in the last three days has been shocking. If everyone ignores the lockdown this weekend and results in many more unnecessary deaths the blame will be firmly on the off the record briefing to the papers.

Driving home tonight and it seems half of Wales ignored the lockdown, the amount of street parties I passed.

As I've said on another topic K they never showed the crowd from a side on view, it possibly might have showed them 2 metres apart.

Being out in the street like that isn't essential though. People in our street had a party but all remained in their own front gardens, many did the dorstep singalong, we could hear it. I was as keen as anybody to observe the commemorations but within the current rules.
