Grimes Beef
at 23:55 26 Aug 2024

What is it about Matt Grimes that gets so many negative comments. I hold my hand up, I'm one of the supporters who is seemingly frustrated by him, but struggling to really pinpoint why.

This is a player who should be edging on club legends status and have a statue outside the stadium. He's been with us nearly 10 years (in January) and is going into this fith year as captain.

He's fit as a fiddle and clearly takes care of his body through being a professional athlete.

Every time I hear him speak he seems like a very mature and well respected guy representing the club professionally and with maturity.

Yet Despite all this I still have this yearning to see him moved out of the team. I don't know if that's because :-

A) he's a victim of his own versatility and is told play numerous roles by numerous managers

B) he's a victim of the 'Swansea Style' and isn't suitable to play the way we have wanted to play over the last 3-4 years in particular.

C) He's just not that good? (We did sign him from League 2 after all)

It's just an enigma I can't quite get my head around. I want to love him... But can't (but I do massively respect him).

Yeah I get your point regarding players playing together, I just can't see it happening much with a 6 day turnaround visit to West Brom and no midweek game for them. I'd love to see an almost full strength side, but can't see it happening, we will need a fully fit/fresh best XI to get anything out of the West Brom game on Saturday

What are you hoping/expecting to see in the league cup fixture on Wednesday?

I personally think we'll see significant changes from what took the field yesterday to get minutes into other players and save the legs of those expected to play a big part against West Brom on Saturday.

I'm expecting the starting XI to look something like:-

Vigaroux* (unless another keeper is confirmed in time)
Naughton
Abbey
Pederson
Tjoe-A-On
Allen
Grimes
Fulton
Abdulai
Bianchini
Vipotnik

Hopefully see Josh Thomas get some minutes too and see what he can offer.

Swansea City 1 Cardiff City 1 : The absolute truth …

Unless we secure promotion the best we can expect is two seasons out of him. He's going to attract interest from the Premier League sooner or later and rightly so.

I thought we were by far the better team yesterday and should have won quite comfortably. The reason we didn't is simply down to the lack of number of occasions we put the ball into the 6yard box. Fair play to Cardiff they did a smash and grab and came away with a deserved point in the end.

I thought we were too precautions with the subs we made and when we made them. At 60 minutes we were still on top but just couldn't put Cardiff away. We needed the second goal before looking to protect the lead.

I watched the game on TV whilst.out in Spain, so didn't get the chance to see much happening off the ball, but I did think Darling was excellent yesterday, he was defensively strong both in the tackle and aerial ability, and carried the ball up the pitch well. He's a player we need to tie down longer term with an improved contract.

I'm not Cullens biggest fan as an out and out striker as I just.dont see him getting the goals we need but fair play to him he worked his socks off yesterday again. I'd love to see him converted to an attacking midfielder.

Red card for Sidibeh today
at 11:19 25 Aug 2024

I don't know a huge amount about the lad, but from that report his temperament is questionable - what's his discipline record like generally?

If he's playing up out of petulance because he wants a move that's an even bigger red flag for me.- IF that's the case, do we really want a player with that moral compass/attitude in our squad?

Joe Allen

Can't see him starting and don't want him to. A fully fit Joe Allen starts every game for me as the holding CM, but this game will come to early. If he's needed, or if there's an opportunity to get 20 minutes under his belt then great, but I suspect he'll (need) and be eased back in gently. Be great to see him back though.

We have been drifting downwards for the past 7-8 seasons no doubt, but I'm optimistic the club have finally got their act in order and the rot will stop. I can genuinely see us pushing for a playoff spot next year. We may fall short, but I think we will improve pretty significantly on last season.

Whilst it would have been great to go back up under cooper we were no way ready to go back to the premier League. We'd have come straight back down with parachute payments and the same vicious circle would have occurred with signings not good enough for the long haul.

I think the club have hit the well needed re-set button and transfer policy seems to have vastly improved. They've not retained players no longer good or reliable enough, and we're signing players with pretty good potential on long term contracts potentially giving them the opportunity to showcase their ability and secure a more lucrative contract at a bigger club.

But why I think this will work is, let's say God forbid, we get an offer in for Franco for 15m next summer after an excellent season with us - that will be one player sale to support balancing the books and have a good income to re-invest back in the squad next year.

Lose one class player, retain the other three and Sign another 3 using the same scouting methodology which will hopefully bring success. I think the 4 signings made so far this season are going to be mustard and be the springboard for our revival.

We're moving on up back in the right direction!

More importantly... It's a bigger risk that he gets poached by a bigger club offering far better wages than us if he's now lost a considerable second income stream.

"4 quality signings" is what's been quoted... So we should be getting news of a new quality signings joining us every 2 days now on average

The boy is talented. Not sure what went on behind closed doors at but his face clearly didn't seem to fit and didn't get the opportunity with us. I think 1m is a bit of a bargain for that potential though.

Tell Martin we'll let Fisher go for 12.5m because he's crocked. When he's back playing the price goes up to 12.500001m

I think we'll see some consistency and see the same team start against Cardiff that took to the field against PNE. Would prefer to see Vipotnik start but think he'll go with Cullen starting as a local boy who knows what a derby means.

I'm also predicting a pretty fiery affair with at least 1 red card but another solid 3-0 win for the Swans!!

Precisely. It depends what people motivations are. Some are to be one club legends, some are for silverware, some just for the love of the game, some for wealth. Whatever the reason(s) it's their personal choice and not harming anybody else so each to their own.

Short Career, line your pockets with as much as you can to secure your/your kids/your grandkids future. Nothing wrong with that.

Depends on the agreement with the two clubs. Some have a recall option they can trigger, but my understanding is this can only be within the transfer window periods.

How long a contract has he got Keith? And do you know if Viptonik has a release clause in his contract?

I hope Mykola bangs them in for fun whilst on loan, it'll aid his development and hopefully he will be considered good enough for the first XI upon his return and/or his value increases meaning more money if he's sold. Either way win-win for us.

As for why he didn't get a chance for us I'm not sure, seems a strange one, he looks like a good player to me and hasn't had a sniff of a chance, but maybe he's not well suited to the tactical style (won't press etc) or maybe it's a personality issue and he's not a good influence in the squad?

The derby

We should absolutely be confident. We're playing decent football, they're not. We're at home. We should have a relatively clean bill of health (with the exception of those who are still out long term) (hope Ronalds arm/hand/wrist is ok), they seem to be struggling.

I correctly predicted a 3-0 win yesterday, and I'm going for the same scoreline/results next week.

But anything can happen in a derby!
