"It's somebody who can help us be true to our identity, which I think is so important. I have never come across a club that has such a strong identity in terms of playing style."

This bit concerns me. No more possession for the sake of it merchants please.

I'm sure Perchy will be going. It's not far for him.

Would still want to go up. Only this time not spend so idiotically that the benefit of parachute payments are lost.

Still too early to say with Ginelly. Needs a good spell now with no pressure to regain fitness and confidence.

MpH has tended towards the underrated for me. I'm still fairly confident that he'd look more comfortable inside rather than on the flanks, but he does make things happen.

The price we pay for energy is linked to our desperate drive for Net Zero, which nobody else is bothering with all that much. Subsidies for renewables, restrictions on building new gas plants, and other measures taken by the last Government and doubled down on with idiotic glee by Ed Milliband.

If we want cheap energy then we need to stop pissing money away on windmills and start building SMR's. We need a dependable base load so anything gained from other sources is a bonus.

After us De Guzman played for Napoli, Eintracht Frankfurt and is still playing for Sparta Rotterdam. After us Joe Allen couldn't hack it at Liverpool, played for Stoke, then came back.

JdG was a quality player and a huge part of our success under Laudrup. Perhaps on a par with Michu considering that he contributed for two seasons rather than one. Jenkins/Monk wanting to replace him with Ki instead of doing whatever we could to keep him permanently was a sign that things were about to go wrong.

16 goals in 93 games for the Swans from central, not even attacking midfield, plus probably the same again in direct assists, and still bizarrely disrespected.

To a point, but we saw every time Russy tried to play his style with a three man defence it was an absolute disaster, so I'm not entirely sure we should be blaming the players for it being just as bad when Williams does it as well.

Likewise, if the team are being sent out to maintain possession at all costs, or ordered not to take any kind of risks with the ball, even if in attacking positions, it's not their fault if we don't create much either.

Cardiff v Hull on Tuesday

I'd generally agree with you but maybe not in this case, and not because it's Cardiff.

A draw gives them both a point and moves them to within six points of us. A defeat for one side would leave them seven points adrift, effectively three wins behind in Cardiff's case as their goal difference is nine worse than ours.

Has been our biggest problem for much of the season, and this piece, whilst as Premier League centric as you'd expect, goes a long way towards perhaps explaining why.

Particularly this bit:

"Teams like Bournemouth have had huge success playing in this more aggressive style - but does it also help sides playing away from home, with less onus on them to dominate the ball and push forward, but instead break quickly and hit teams on the counter-attack?

The percentage of goals scored after "fast breaks", according to Opta, has never been higher than this season.

It feeds into the notion of the classic, archetypal 'away goal' - soak up pressure, win the ball back and hit the home side on the break."

How many times have we been caught on the counter? How many times has our slow, tedious possession style prevented us from doing the same?

Foolish to draw serious conclusions after just one match of course, but it was a game that provided heavy evidence to suggest that those in the "Grimes was slowing us down" camp might have had a point.

There's no way that he'd have covered the kind of ground, physically imposed himself on the midfield or played the kind of game that both Franco and O'Brien did. not even when he was on it.

Like you say, we were a little uncertain for the first 10-15 minutes or so but really grew in confidence after that. If we can start games in the same vein then there's no reason why we shouldn't be looking up the table instead of nervously down it.

The club will be acutely aware that their last three managerial appointments haven't exactly proven to be stellar ones.

It's vitally important that they get this next one right. If that means not rushing things, taking the time to look through all the reasons why the previous incumbents failed, understand and acknowledge why attendances have fallen and basically reconsider the thought processes that led us to appointing the likes of Martin and Williams in the first place, then so be it.

Sheehan has given them a bit of breathing space to do so.

The performance was just as important as the result on Saturday. Might well have been our best 90 minutes of the season. That Sheehan can raise the levels that much with the same players will probably convince the club that they don't have to rush into appointing a replacement.

Exemplified by surviving because of another team's points deduction a couple of years ago. They weren't good enough to stay up on their own merits yet still managed it.

A baked in shitstain on the Championship toilet bowl.

Leeds away is undoubtedly the hardest game we have left, closely followed by Sunderland. Escaping those places without a shoeing will be an achievement. If we can play like we did yesterday though we're capable of claiming points in our other four away games. There really isn't much between most of the teams outside the top three or four.

Our away form all season has been quite respectable. It's at home where we've struggled. Pick up 7-10 points from those games and that should be more than enough.

An important reality for those responsible for appointing our new manager

Absofrigginglutely.

Square pegs in square holes. Pick a style to suit what you have, not try to squeeze unsuitable players into the tactical model you've decided to play anyway.

Swans crush Blackburn : Was it just a coincidence ?
at 09:49 23 Feb 2025

We could also be sensible about this and acknowledge that Sheehan made a deliberate point of mentioning how isolated Vipotnik has been in his post match interview instead of trying to maintain the fantasy that his struggles are entirely self inflicted. If we had been giving him anything like the support he had yesterday all season and he still wasn't cutting it then I'd probably be damning him also.

You may be right that he's ultimately not good enough, but I certainly don't blame him for his struggles under Williams any more than I blamed our defence for regularly conceding stupid goals under Martin because I understood that they weren't being coached very well.

Next few games will tell us a lot more. Fresh start for him. As indeed it is for all of our players.
