I still go to the twice-monthly antiques fairs at Kempton racecourse fairly regularly Ron. Sometimes you can pick up treasures if you're lucky. I know several of the dealers well as I've had dealings with them over many years at Kempton, Ardingly, etc. If anyone watches Dickinson's Real Deal, my old friend Pompey girl Karen Dalmeny is often on there, as is Henry Nicholls who's antiques shop in Worthing I go to every couple of months or so.

Getting back to a musical point ; just before the covid epidemic, I saw (the awful) Lilly Allen wondering around Kempton early one Tuesday morning looking for antiques. She looked as miserable and sulky as sin.

A bit like last weekend at the IoW festival and the legend that is Neil Finn & Crowded House. Poor bugger struggled big time on some of the notes during their set. Contrast that to the excellent Chrissie Hynde (who nicked my Zippo lighter back in 1979 but that's another story) and The Pretenders who were excellent still.

The IoW festival last weekend had a better line up. Glastonbury this year is utter tripe.

Relax everybody. Defence - with or without Kyle Walker-Peters - is not something we need to worry too much about... not now that 'super' Alex McCarthy has signed an extension.

If my memory serves me right from my days on HM Ships, the Navy will fly you home from anywhere in the world if a close family member dies and there's a funeral. No such chance if it's a baby being born. The crew always know a ships' programme a year ahead - bar a war breaking out like the Falklands of course. That cost us four weeks alongside Christmas and New Year 1982 in Hong Kong, thanks to that git Galtieri.

That may have changed now of course - but I doubt it. My old man was on HM Submarines for 29-years and no one ever knew where they were. He was never allowed to tell me and my brothers or mum where he was going! He left Faslane once on the nuclear sub Warspite and dived once they were in the Irish Sea. They never surfaced again until alongside in Rio, Brazil - all that way. Sod that. I used to say "Dad, the sea is for sailing on, not under!".

Couldn't he have just waited 'til Sunday evening and gone back with rest of the squad?

Meanwhile in more football news... I see Pompey start the new season in the Championship away at Leeds on the opening day. Let's hope Leeds are still seething at missing out on promotion to Pompey's more illustrious & glamorous neighbours.

You're right. I went off on a tantrum through misty, seething eyes this morning with it all.

I see that Palace have put a £65M minimum price tag on Guehi.

I'm still trying to process the "we're still experimenting" comment from Southgate after the Denmark game. Isn't that what the friendlies were for pre-tournament? But no, Southgate just went ahead in those and picked the same old boring faces and left all the real talent on the bench.

And then there's the bizarre "we're missing Kalvin Phillips" comment. I mean... WTF?!?!

Same here. One of my best mates is a big, lifelong Villa fan, so I've been following them closely this season. Been to a couple of their games with him and watched some of their live Sky games in the pub together or at home with a beer together. He's obviously chuffed to bits with the season just gone - and rightfully so. They've played some terrific football and have got a very attack-minded manager.

Ollie Watkins has been superb this season for Villa. I'd put him alongside Kane every game - no question. He's got the pace that Kane no longer has & the lad is a smart cookie with a footballing brain who knows where the goal is. He'd work well alongside Kane and give the opposition, no matter who, something to worry about.

Likewise, Idrissa Gueye has been superb for Villa this season. He's just quietly gone about his business and is a huge part of why & how Villa ended up in the champions League. He's probably been England's best, most consistent player so far this tournament. Funny then that the boring waistcoat w@nker is only playing him because he's been forced to. Gueye wouldn't have got a look-in had Harry McGuire been fit. That's a fact.

Southgate is a dull, Mr Safe, inspirational manager who couldn't motivate anyone - let alone one of the best young England squads we've had in years. We're all waiting for 'that' game coming up where we'll snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and another tournament that we should have done so much better in slips by in bitter disappointment. Such a wasted opportunity it all feels... again.

Throw in the equally annoying Lineker and I'm with you. I only start watching all the games when the teams come out onto the pitch. By HT and before the giggly bellend Micah Richards starts his analysis, I'm off to make a cuppa or have a dump.

I like Mark Chapman and that's about it as far as the BBC are concerned..

You'd never guess this fella is one of those caught up in the scam. Craig Williams, who is standing for the Conservatives in Montgomeryshire & Glyndwr, said he "Placed a flutter".

I mean... would you ever guess he was a Conservative MP by his looks alone?

Southgate is Mr Safe, Mr Dull. It's been a while since I've watched England play such a dreadful defensive game in a big tournament and worry about conceding a goal.

We have so many attacking threats/options in the squad. We should be playing with a swagger and making other teams worry about our firepower & threat instead - not sitting deep with the midfield just in front of the defence.

The team are mirroring the manager at the moment. Dull, boring, and uninspiring.
