From lost in space to team pilot. It has taken some time for him to get up to speed but bloody hell he controls the midfield now. His reading of the game is so good now and he plays with a maturity well beyond his years. He seems to absolutely love it as well and has a fantastic relationship with the fans.
So Varane is Declan Rice and Smyth is Andy Sinton! We are gonna be world beaters soon. Has Nardi been called the new Parkes? I'm sure Dunne is the new Macca. I'm waiting for Morgan to be called the new Wilkins.
Some on here go so over the top. You know, one bad game and they are both going to be the worst players ever. They are exactly the same players that won one in 16 or whatever it was at the beginning. That suggests the manager changing the style, tactics etc should be the one getting the plaudits. But I won't call him the next Sexton or Venables.
I like Varane, but....... he's not that amazing. He works hard, breaks up play well and wins the ball. Shame he can't pass forward.
Works hard, breaks up play and wins the ball - didn’t they sign Madsen to do the rest I.e create and score goals - that’s the bit that’s not working
As usual, we as Rangers fans and probably football fans in general go overboard . Gets sent off acclimatising and he’s the worst player ever to wear the hoops. Has a few decent games and he’s a multi million pound premier league star in the making .
Varane has a lot to learn still but importantly he is learning quick. Starting to understand the championship and more importantly our club and its supporters (tough ask that one 🤣). But in all seriousness he’s doing all the right things and playing well. He looks like he’s enjoying it too.
Only young too . Good for him .
But let’s not starting putting him and Declan Rice in the same sentence just yet . That doesn’t do the lad any favours .

Your defensive midfielders have to be able to play the ball forward. They will usually be the the one that wins possession, so start the next attack.
This is why we are now rarely playing out from the back, it is usually played long, either along the wing for Smyth to chase or for Dunne to flick on. We are bypassing the entire midfield as they can't pass.
Playing this way will get results, as proven, but over a season we won't challenge. Varane and Field have 1 assist between them them, that is pretty damning.
We desperately need a central midfielder who can create to play alongside Varane or Field.

I’m not sure that I follow completely.
Morgan has been the more advanced recently and assisted in the last game. Field has scored three goals now, when also playing further forward.
If we weren’t on the back foot so often, I suspect the stats would be better but we have been backs to the wall for a while.
Are you saying we lack the right players or the right system please ?
I think we have changed the system for the better (to suit the players we have, which is how it should be) but I’m not seeing the amazing defensive attacking players you suggest lining up to sign a contract for us right now.
I’m not ITK or a manager/coach either so please help a simple minded, ordinary fan understands the intricacies of the situation better.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?
Shot from outside the area from a short clearance and he spaffed it into the crowd.
I think he was in the area but, yes, that one. Keeper palms the ball to Smyth, Paul's volley hits the crowd of players, ball deflects to Varane, who sends it into orbit.

We are on the back foot because we can't retain possession as our midfielders can't pass. We lack creative, technically gifted midfielders to play a more passing/possession based game. If we kept the ball better we wouldn't need to play both Varane and Field.
I agree, MC has changed the system to suit the players he has at his disposal. Hence, we now have more 'destroyers' like Varane, Field, Smyth and Dunne starting to try and shore up a technically poor team.
Be honest, if MC had the players he really wants, then we wouldn't be playing long ball, and three out of the four above probably wouldn't be starting.
Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted we are winning a few, but I honestly can't remember when we scored a really well crafted goal. And longer term that is worrying as the better teams will pick us off. We've played the top 7 once each. Lost 4 drawn 3 won 0, goals for 4 goals against 13.

I really don’t agree with you about 3 out of the 4, not sure where you see Smyth as a midfield “destroyer” and Dunne is a defender who has already scored 3 or 4 this season. I would suggest most teams outside of the top 6 or so have the same sort of record against the top teams as well. As already said above, Field has scored 3 or 4 goals this season, not bad for a defensive midfielder and Smyth must have assisted a few as well.

That ball was spinning like a top when it came to him. Not an easy one to hit the target with.
Varane has the potential to be very good indeed, maybe only Morgan has more. Two very good acquisitions.
I have really enjoyed watching his contributions. Ala Colback (and now Kieran), he is not afraid to put a body in on the opposition. Yes, it shows in the cards accumulated but to be fair, the refereeing in the championship has been 'intriguing' and our midfield 3-4 are all picking up cards. To your point tho, it is the way the midfield group has played that has made a vast difference. The current unit (Field-Varane-Morgan) are present at both ends of the pitch.

‘Our midfielders can’t pass” did you not watch Kieran Morgan yesterday! Some of them passes were ridiculously good, most were into the final third and over 80 percent success rate. Silly comment
Personally I am not ready to claim any victory as I am still unsure about him. He does some absolutely brain dead stupid things at times, ie; Norwich equaliser and many other times he can be wrong side. He fell asleep admiring his cross yesterday and ended up offside before firing the ball into the white horse.
He has days where he is physically dominant and bad on the ball and days like yesterday where I thought he was good on the ball but poor off it.
Wildly inconsistent. But what he does do, is enable Field to be an absolute animal, tearing around the midfield taking no sh*t from no one.
Massive upside for sure, but I'm a long way from convinced just yet.

A little more composure is required in such situations as there were 2 waiting in the 6-yard-area for a tap-in. You can see why he's never scored in his career. That being said, it's his first season in the Championship and he is improving. If he continues trending in the right direction then we may have a good player on our hands.
