Regarding the point about squad size, which the two statements take contrasting views on:

There's not much logic in justifying a larger squad than would otherwise have been the case just to cover for this competition

A larger Dale squad this season means we may have more cover for injuries, suspensions etc but also means a certain amount of juggling to keep the whole squad match-ready

By all means justify a larger squad for those intentions, but not to allow us to participate in a meaningless competition

There’s also a contrast in the statements around the financial aspect.

Presumably Dale can clarify exactly how much money they have currently forecast to make from the competition factoring in possible fluctuations in crowd sizes.

This reflects what was being said by many clubs in late summer when the FA Cup replays were abandoned because Premier League Clubs wanted to send players across the world to play in other tornaments to make more money. I tend to believe in everything said in this statement. But if our owners are happy to take the financial risks, then who are we to disagree.

Have any Dale fixtures been announced for this competition yet?
I’m only asking because Halifax are playing Newcastle in it next Tuesday night.
£12 admission for adults and £10 for concessions.

Who?

Reading, Eastleigh. I think there are now eight clubs in the National League who have withdrawn from the competition.

Eastleigh were in the original eight who declined to take part. Reading have since withdrawn.

First round of games tonight and the competition is so important that the BBC website isn’t carrying the scores.
Has no one told them?

Looking at Oldham’s Twitter, it appears injury issues have already cropped up.
They only charged £1 for ST holders, £5 for everyone else.

I noticed we released the dates of our games earlier, no confirmed prices yet. Hopefully by Nov 5th we’ll have agreed on no more than a couple of quid and accepted playing first team players would be ridiculous.

Are there any rules on who has to play?

Oldham won 2-1..a first team player sent off and another one went off injured. Attendance of 455, £1 entrance for season ticket holders. Described as a terrible night by one Oldham fan.

Halifax lost 2-1 to Newcastle.
No attendance given which isn’t surprising given the ticket prices.
Local paper described their team has having “an experimental lineup” and there being “a non-existent atmosphere”.
Oh, and Halifax had a player sent off as well.

It seems as though red cards in this competition don't count in respect of league games and i think the National League teams have to field a minimum of four first team players for a minimum of fifteen minutes...something like that anyway. It's all very bizarre. There's been some Micky Mouse competitions down the years but this one wins the gold medal.

So what’s the point of this competition and who exactly gains anything from it?

The National League Clubs have received a payment each to compete in these games i think, probably enough to cover hosting the games. It's designed as a sweetener from the big clubs to compensate the small clubs after the decision to end FA Cup replays. It also gives the big clubs a opportunity to give their fringe and younger players a taste of men's football. They also expect the fans to turn up and pay to watch B team/ reserve players in a meaningless contest. It's a bit like when the big fat butcher throws out some bones for the stray dogs to fight over, we should all be grateful.

Four players who started the previous league match (or who will play in the next league match!!) have to start.

And yet they’re promoting how it’s all free to watch on NLTV! Almost encouraging non-attendance to the point it could all be played behind closed doors to cut down on costs.

What if the players you were going to pick in the next league match get injured? Does that then mean we’d have to pick some of the other 7 starters rather than others and thus deliberately play a weakened team in a league match?!

Exactly, it's all very bizarre. Finding tonight's fixtures and results isn't easy, they aren't listed on the Sky App, not sure about the BBC

Halifax attendance..292.

Oldham subbed Otis Khan after 15 minutes when he wasn’t injured. It seems there may also be a rule about these 4 players having to only play a quarter of an hour as a minimum.

Why did we ever get involved in this debacle? https://rochdaleafc.co.uk/our-position-on-the-national-league-cup/ is as unconvincing as it gets. Should the weather be Rochdaleish it's going to knacker the pitch unnecessarily.

We can watch for free online at home, or for next to nowt admission. Nobody cares how we do in this farce of a competition - it's just pointless, with potential injury risks that don't bare thinking about.

Looks like Shaymen and BIFFO's have voted with their feet, as we no doubt will.

We could show it for free in Ratcliffes which could ironically serve our finances better than attending one of these games if fans can have a few drinks in there whilst the match is being played!

Plain daft.
