Greatest Sporting Legend in your lifetime... only one pick. 01:16 - May 12 with 4739 viewsSwanjaxs

For me it has to be Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr

Undoubtedly the greatest ever sporting icon in my lifetime

You might think I've forgotten, but one day, when you least expect it, my time will come.
Poll: Celtic and Rangers should be fast tracked into the Championship ASAP

I forgot Gareth, dammit.
If we're talking sublime artistry, class and an aesthetic quality to go with technique, speed, stamina, skill and all the rest of it, you can narrow the field a bit. When I mentioned the Brownlees I was mainly thinking about fraternity and guts. Leon comes into that category for his selflessness and industry for the team. There should have been a couple of categories:
1) pure artistry (Federer and Borg, Sobers and Benaud, Best, Cruyff and Pele plus Ronaldo perhaps)
2) Bravery, team ethic, odds-defying will power etc (Botham, Leon, Bobby Moore, several Welsh rugby players)
3) sportsmen and women you just loved to watch, even if they had a limitation or two perhaps (Giggs. Ronnie o'Sullivan ,Shane Warne and so forth)

Viv Richards loved watching him at his peak.
Never ever wore a helmet either fantastic player and entertainer.

Poll: Would you like Cooper to stay or go (regardless of compensation situation)

The answer is, of course, Ali, but Botham, Benaud, Sobers, Cruyff, Best, Jordan, Borg etc all deserve an honourable mention. Me, I've got a soft spot for the Brownlee brothers.

Andre is better than Jordan.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

The dancer or the horse?

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Federer tops the tennis list by miles mun if we are just talking greatest at the sport. Ali only comes second to Alan Curtis because we are talking the whole package.

Pele also has to challenge Ali. In fact I'd say they are absolutely on a par.

Otherwise it's just a game of 'what's your favourite sport'

Maybe if you’re only talking about men...

It’s interesting that you assume it’s only men.

Federer. He was always exceptional, then 2017 happened. Beat Nadal at a grand slam final, won Wimbledon without dropping a set, and destroyed Rafa a further three times that year. Aged 35-36 too. The greatest in my lifetime (1989-)

If we are only talking tennis, Serena and Martina before her both have very strong cases for being regarded as the greatest player of all time.

I know that this a Swansea City Forum but how on earth can you class Leon in this bracket?

He has been a wonderful player for us but in football terms look at the names mentioned on this page alone.

I’m pretty sure the post was ironic? At least, I hope it was. He’s nowhere near the greatest player to play for the Swans. In fact, he’s not even the greatest player to play for the Swans that’s still employed by the club.

Who do you fancy is the player still connected that takes the prize, Lis?

Curtis of those still in the employ of the club.

Leon was a great player but not even in the same league.

First crush I take it?

Anyway how are you coping up there? I don’t envy you I must say, I haven’t long come down off the mountain with the pups and to look out and to see the Sun’s reflection dancing on the breakers in the bay was a sight to behold on a clear day like this.

Not sure about crush. He was my favourite player when I was a kid though.

We’ve been blessed with many great players over the years, and Leon is also one of them. But he didn’t have that effortless balance that the real greats have - Curtis did. Other opinions exist - wrong ones

All fine here. The view’s not so good though and the dog walks are a challenge with lots of people. It’ll be better when we can drive further to get somewhere less busy. Safer as well. May try that later this week now we’re able to.

Oh, we’ve been very careful. Albeit we must have been exposed to it before we all knew about it. Whether enough to get infected or not who knows until testing is done at some point.

I was saying yesterday though there have been more cases per capita (that we know of) in Swansea than in Hammersmith & Fulham (can only get the figures at a local authority level). Which given the difference in population density, is genuinely astonishing.

Listening to the BBC World Service in work last night and a Virologist was saying that Cumbria was a hot spot. I was scratching my head at that, I’ve spent a bit of time there and it would have been somewhere I’d have imagined was a haven. What do I know?

A thousand times??? I agree Curt was better but I would have loved to see them play together, Curt would have thrived on Leon winning the ball back and finding him in space! Just my opinion!

Anyway, my choice isn't a sport I follow not one I have ever participated in, it's Steve Redgrave. I know others have won more golds but to me he is the embodiment of faster, higher, stronger which must have been a really massive effort at 38 with type 2 diabetes.

Honourable mentions for Daley Thompson and Tanni Grey-Thompson.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

He can’t be described as topping the list ‘by miles’ if you include 2 players that won more than him (Serena and Martina)... he could be your favourite. That’s different.

I was having a laugh, not being serious.

To be fair, I think Robbie did a good job at winning the ball back for Curtis. I also think he was better than Leon btw

Serena and Martina are/were phenomenal and this is not belittling their amazing achievements but the fact is they are/were playing at a far lower standard than the men’s game. Serena was asked if she’d ever play Andy Murray and she replied “I doubt I’d win a single point”.
