Swansea recycling fines 06:51 - Feb 26 with 14704 viewsLord_Bony

Residents of Swansea can now be fined £100 as from today for failing to recycle waste. New patrol officers will be checking black bin bags on collection day.

If any recyclable material is found and that includes food, fines will be issued. They have been trying to get this implemented since 2006.

Just how much is it costing to employ people to check bags?

Far better to collect every week. Just like the old days.
These recycling centres are the new call centres.
If some money people/entrepreneurs got their act together this is lucrative! Plenty out there would enjoy the job.

Bloody ridiculous that 3-4 black bags are the maximum you can put out every fortnight!!

100% agree with this, living in the close vicinity of students it's disgusting how they refuse to recycle.

Let's be fair if you recycle your paper, glass, plastic and food, there's no way you need 3 black bags in a fortnight

You give it out, you take it back it`s all part of the game

Perhaps, that depends on how many live in ones household.

It's not hard to do is it.

We will always have the lazy who can't be bothered,so let's see if a few £100 fines gets them concentrating, for once the council are doing something correct.

Take a family of four, if they recycle properly, 3 bags are more than sufficient, what are people actually putting in black bags?

Only hard plastics are now being collected in the pink plastic sacks. So...where do the softbplastics go if not recycleable? Swansea council don’t seem to know either!

I agree.

Some people have a out of sight out of mind mentality when it comes to waste disposal.

Try taking a pink bag to a recycling centre.

Every bag is now tipped out and the plastics separated. If they are not sure what plastic it is, it goes to the landfill.

Anything that resembles downpipe, polypipe etc is marked down as the "wrong type of plastic" and goes to the landfill.

Wood is now turned away from all recycling centres since January, and can only go to the baling plant in Llansamlet. Large amounts of wood is now being found in Penlan Rugby club car park, behind the recycling centre!! If you live in and around Mumbles, West Cross etc, you have drive past Clyne recycling centre and go to Llansamlet.

Everyday above ground ... Is a good day! 😎

Family of 4 here. Easily get by on 1 black bag every 2 weeks, sometimes just 1 a month.

But then we haven't chopped up Mamgi yet and tried to dispose of her. That might be trickier.

What happens if you miss collection day for whatever reason, you have to wait 2 weeks another 2 weeks for collection, hence the black bags

Black bag. It's clear in their info.

Agree on the problem of recycling centres not accepting certain items though, like wood. If the council are going down this route all centres need to take most common items, otherwise lazy feckers will just dump it.

3 in our household. We recycle as much as possible, and never have more than 1 half to three quarters full bin bag every 2 weeks. We have a compost heap for food waste.

Three in this household - most of the time, and my plastics container is literally full every week - as most items come in plastic We don't have a compost heap, because we only have a lawn and patio. The food container is full in no time. Do a cooked dinner; with the veg and potato peelings, a chicken carcass and the thing is full, it's totally inadequate

Collections within a few years will most likely be a paid service for those not not on benefits. It’s been heading that way for a few years now and doing slowly no one will notice.

Family of 4 here and we managed fine to be honest but the first recycling under the new system we’d filled the plastics sack within a week. To make things better / easier we’ve now got a system here at home where we compress soft plastics and put inside a plastic container or similar. Its surprising how much soft plastic you can get inside a tied plastic bread bag for example.

No limit on any bins except black bags.

You can easily get all non-recyclable rubbish into three bags fortnightly if you recycle correctly.

It can be a chore certainly compared to how it used to be but that’s how it is today. They used to come around the back of my gran’s house, take a metal bin full of everything and ash, tip it on the lorry and bring it all the way back. Those were the days eh?

I will say though, that for the amount we pay in Council Tax, we are asked to do more than what we should do but that is the fault of WG not the council who are given less and asked to do more year on year.
