What's the most difficult job? 07:39 - Feb 15 with 3177 viewssundowner

Being a referee or a linesman is a thankless task, but which do you think is the most difficult? A lot of the refs job is a matter of opinion, some might think a tackle fair, others that it was a foul, and an argument can be made for both. A lino however deals mostly in facts, either it was offside, or it wasn't offside. The so called studio experts create lines on a screen proving a player was offside because his big toe was ahead of their line.

Both jobs difficult and thankless but my vote goes to the lino.

Done both - I found being a lino far more stressful.

This made me laugh the other day.

The faw are short of referees and had a post on Facebook publicising a new online referees course where you have 6 weeks of online exams on the laws of the game.

If you pass those you are then invited to a regional centre where you will be taught practical skills including

...whistle blowing and flag waving ! 😊 😊😊

I did both for ten years at local level, the lino job is far more demanding.

As a ref, you decide where you're going to place yourself on the pitch and how much you're going to run about. OK, you have to keep up with play to some extent, but contrast that with a lino, who has to constantly keep in line with the last defender. This involves jogging or sprinting up and down the line for most of the match, whilst trying to keep one eye behind you and one eye in front!

Not exactly because the linesman is, at the most, on halfway, in line with the last defender, he should never be 40 yards out of position.

For me the middle is always more difficult, with a lot more variables. The line can be quite straightforward, depending on how the ref wants to control things, i.e does he want to lead on decisions, or does he want to follow you

I don't think Swans11 is saying the linesman is 40 yards behind where he should be. He's taking about the distance between the man passing the ball and the player receiving it, and the lino has to judge whether the latter is offside or not, even if the two players are miles apart.

In those circumstances, it can be difficult to decide if the player receiving was in an offside position at the moment the ball was played to him - the lino has to be looking at the passer and the receiver at the same time, and both of them are probably moving!
