Books: what's everyone reading? on 19:45 - Mar 25 by monmouth | If you want an eminently readable explanation of the banking crash then The End of Wall Street by Roger Lowenstein is a good 'un. Also if you want to be astonished at some of the antics they got up to then Barbarians at the Gate by Burrough and Helyar (when journalists were investigative) will entertain you. You won't believe it's not made up. |
Barbarians at the Gate is good, as is Liar's Poker.

Aye anything by Mike Lewis is cracking too. The Human Piranha still makes me chuckle, mainly because dickheads like that were so common. I daresay they still are...glad I don't have to find out.

Have you read 'Goldman Sachs: The Culture of Success' by Lisa Endlich Mon? Good read. You'll never regret your decision to leave it all behind :-)

I'm often taken aback when I see prices like that. My collection is nudging Northward of some 5,000 or so volumes I would imagine and there are some real gems in there. I should start thinking about proper insurance.

Not so much that. All the ingredients are there, it's just not that funny. Will probably re-read Conn Iggulden's Emperor series until the next Joe Abercrombie comes out.

It's a book that's launched a thousand academic careers....(Niall Ferguson is stealing a living from it) Worth a go as long as you keep it at arms length.

Books: what's everyone reading? on 09:02 - Mar 26 with 2558 views | yescomeon | Currently reading 'journey into the end of the night' by Celine, imo a masterpiece but it's taking an age to read. I read for a living (kind of) so I don't do much of it in my free time. Got a few fiction books on the list, like Ballard's 'high rise' which I want to read before I watch the film. Also got recommended niall Griffiths by a mate, 'grits' and 'sheepshagger' sound interesting. Any of the history buffs on here have an interest in ancient British and Irish history as that is the period of history I really want to read more on. Any recommendations on that topic would be most welcome.

Recently read the Emperor series and now on the Conqueror series... and quite enjoying it.

Books: what's everyone reading? on 12:57 - Apr 15 with 2382 views | Pegojack | Just finished 'Natchez Burning' by Greg Iles and about to embark on the sequel 'The Bone Tree'. Cracking thrillers concerned with the activities of a Mississipi splinter group of the Klu Klux Klan that make the Waffen SS look like the Salvation Army, and those who set out to oppose them.
