A different manager may go for a 1 - 4 - 2 - 3 - 1 formation though, which has worked for us in the past. For example:

Fabianski

Naughton? /A. N. Other - Fernandez - Williams - Kingsley

Cork - Britton

Barrow - Sigurdsson - Routledge?/ Montero?

Ayew (or whoever we get to replace Gomis / Eder)

Previous successful uses of that formation have featured Shelvey and Ki in those midfield roles, neither of which are as defensive as Britton and Cork. Even in that system we shouldn't need an additional defensive midfielder in there (plus Fulton still exists as a potential backup for a disciplined job).

I am not sure about getting rid of Rangel, it would depend on how much of a drain his wages are and the overall Squad places situation.
He is a good backup as long as he is not expected to play 90 minutes and I am sure that if he could pass on some of his skills to the youngsters it would really benefit the club

Any first team squad player is going to be a drain on wages. They all earn in the double figure thousands, especially Rangel.

Two holding midfielders does allow the other three midfielders to express themselves more. It also gives us pace and width. I would have thought it's at least worth a try at the moment rather than the chaotic setup we had against Villa on Saturday!

If we were defending a lead with 10 mins to go, there aren't many players I'd want brought on the pitch than Rangel.

Again, depending on wages, he's a perfect back up for RB. We certainly need to strengthen in that area but Rangel is good enough to have on the bench. We know that he'd throw himself into every tackle for us.

As I said earlier, we aren't going to just sell all of these players and bring in massive quality in place of them. I'd rather Rangel on the bench right now than an unknown under-21 to be honest.

But next season Mr Swerve? let's look at the oldies ages next season.. IMO.. the only player who should retain his place for next season is Ashley Williams.. they all earn 35k+ and have been mediocre this season.. offering absolute shambolic performances.

Rangel (34) 30k+
Williams (32) 40k+
Routledge (32) 30k+
Gomis (31) 60k+
Britton (34) 40k+

Now here is an example and comparison..

Fabianski (31) 40k+
Nordfeldt (27) 20k+
Zabret, Vickers, Davies 10k maximum

Naughton (28) 30k+
Widmer (24) (as an example) 20k+
Shephard (22) 10k maximum

Taylor (28) 30k+
Elabdellaoui (25) 20k+
Kingsley (22) 10k maximum

Williams (32) 40k+
Fernandez (28) 30k+
Amat (25) 20k+
Tah (21) 20k+ (example)

Cork (27) 30k+
Allen (27) 30k+ (example)
Fulton (22) 10k maximum

Ki (28) 40k+
Fer (27) 30k+
Grimes (21) 10k+

Sigurdsson (27) 40k+
Ayew (27) 50k+
Carles Gil (24) 20k+ (example, pluck a youngster from the lower leagues)

Montero (27) 30k+
Kacaniklic (25) 20k+ (example)
Barrow (24) 10k+
Keita Baldé (22) 20k+ (example)

Bony (28) 50k (example)
Paloschi (27) 30k+
Ayew (25) 30k+ (example)
McBurnie (20) 10k maximum

Guidolin
Ambrosetti
Bortuluzzi

or what coaching team/scouting team the board are looking at

That's a team that can be progressive, it gives us options.. fresh impetus..

Britton
Rangel
Routledge (as well as they have served us.. this season has been a catalyst for 'change')
Gomis
Eder
Emnes
Tabanou
Dyer
Tremmel
Bartley

Will not take us forward as a club, this season has been full of fluke results..

1-0 Aston Villa
1-0 Norwich
1-0 West Brom
1-0 Watford
2-1 Aston Villa
2-1 Everton
2-2 Bournemouth

We were lucky and unconvincing in these ties..

We deserved defeat against

Watford 1-0
Southampton 3-1
Stoke 1-0
Arsenal 3-0
Norwich 1-0
Liverpool 1-0
Leicester 3-0
Man Utd 2-1
Southampton 1-0
Spurs 2-1
Bournemouth 3-2

Deserved a point..

Everton 0-0
Spurs 2-2
Palace 0-0
Sunderland 1-1
Palace 1-1
Man City 2-1
Arsenal 2-1

Deserved all three..

Chelsea 2-2
Newcastle 2-0
Man Utd 2-1
West Ham 0-0
Sunderland 4-2
West Brom 1-1

We have turned up 6 times this season.. we have been adequate 7 times.. and disastrous in 18 games.. somehow it's looking like we'll survive.. by beating teams by the odd goal when we should've lost or drew.

A season review on all aspects need to be scrutinised like Stalin.. from board members to the stewards.. (the janitors deserve a pay rise though!.. it's in impeccable condition everytime.)

God help us if we're paying those youth lads £10k a week. Jay Fulton might be somewhere near there because he signed and got a new contract, but our own products will be on much less.

Wasn't Ben Davies on £500 when he broke into the first team?

Although I'm in general agreement with the trajectory you've outlined - a drastic overhaul is needed - I don't think you can in any way describe Britton's performances since he's been back in the first team as "shambolic". I'd have thought that we've got to give him another shot in the squad (at least) for next season.

The majority of youth team players still only get 1 or sometimes 2 year professional deals. It's only recently that a few prospects have been given long term contracts (Dan James and Adnan Maric in the last few weeks), so I think some common sense is prevailing down there. For now.

The Scottish lads (and Grimes) are probably all on silly money though.

As a matter of interest, do you have a rough idea of what the youth team players who have not been given long term contracts are on?

I would hate to think it was more than £1k a week before tax for pampered 18/19 year olds. Even that will be more than they'll eventually earn when they peak at National League South level.

They will be earning a tiny fraction of what our first-team Premier League players get, which ranges anywhere between £20k and £70k a week.

Wages aren't public over here but they are in Italy. Paloschi was getting €23.6k (~£18.5k) pre-tax as a former AC Milan starlet and Serie A mainstay.

Thanks for the info. What about James and Grimes? How close are they to what a regular first team player earns these days?

Grimes would have been on peanuts at Exeter, but he was signed for a tidy sum and with a bit of hype so his agent probably got him paid well. £10k has been bandied about in the media.

James is likely on a couple thousand. Kid looks really good playing above his age group in the u21s, and depending on how he develops physically (unlike most who jump up a level early, he's still a small lad) could be the real deal. Makes sense to tie him down to the club. Cost £72k from Hull. Potential bargain.
