Russell Martin looks forward after a week of talks and displays of solidarity
Friday, 10th Feb 2023 08:34 by @Cornish67David

Russell Martin has answered questions by the media on this weeks conversations with the majority Swansea City ownership. This before leaving for South Yorkshire for the weekends match at Bramall Lane, the home of Sheffield United. The game kicks off at 3pm tomorrow.

The week has seen many responses in the negative towards the handling of the transfer window, and indeed the reasons why given thereafter by the Swansea City majority ownership. This resulted in a collective response by the Swansea City coaching team and staff when they all attended Russell Martin’s press conference prior to the bizarre loss to Birmingham City last week. It was a symbolic gesture of solidarity, and one which didn’t go unnoticed by those attending, and it was widely reported.

The planned meetings this week with all involved in hierarchical decision making at Swansea City we reported here on Monday.

Clearing up any ambiguity on this weeks conversations and any positive outcomes Russell Martin said. "Of course, that’s the term I'd use, we’ve moved on. Everyone agrees, we’ll try and do things a bit differently and try and improve on what we've done. Ultimately I think it’ll turn out to be a positive for the club. Everyone's been really honest with each other, it's all you can ever ask for. We’re moving on and focusing on getting some stuff done here at the club. Josh Marsh has been in some positive talks with some of our players' agents. From it there’s come some positive stuff and some positive actions."

The suggestions of Russell Martin walking earlier in the week after a real hard watch of a post match interview on Saturday have been put to bed, for now. And indeed the possibility of him being sacked or paid off. However, the Swans are not in a good run of form, despite the performances the whole strategy from the coaching team is very much in question. The Sheffield United game this weekend may be a free hit for the team, nothing is expected, and nothing but a defeat is being predicted. Then along comes the home game against Blackpool on Wednesday evening, another indicator of the learning we all hope came out of the Birmingham City game.

However, a loss to Blackpool won’t sit easy with anyone connected to the club.

The good news is that those out of contract players, and there are numerous on the horizon, all will receive an invitation to talk with the club and we expect this to happen after next Wednesday. However again, it didn’t need to come to a head in the way that it did last week to become an item on the agenda. What we do know is a much improved offer to Ryan Manning is the only thing that will keep him at Swansea City. And when we say much improved we mean it. The majority ownership have played a pretty poor game this month overall. And questions will continue to be asked of them until it is seen they can be more open and transparent when things go drastically wrong as they did in January. An orchestrated and blindingly obvious attempt to deceive the Swansea City support with so many holes in it was embarrassing.

Liam Walsh is back and fit after a difficult two years of loans and injuries

Joe Allen who is now a man of leisure when it comes to international football - and Liam Walsh have travelled with the squad, it’s looking like both could feature on the bench, this is great news for Walsh who hasn’t played in a Swans game since his summer achilles injury against Haverfordwest County. Joel Latibeaudiere does seem to have an incredible recovery rate from his on the pitch injuries, however he won’t feature tomorrow. No free agents are being planned by the Swans to come in to the club, they will be seen as players who don’t form the bigger picture for the future of the club. You can in a way see that point but of course had we seen more stringent action last month on players coming in would course alleviate those free agent questions.

And Swansea City still don’t have a recognised back up goalkeeper.

More news later in the day on this weekends game.
