The JackArmy.net Review Of 2003 - Part III

July

July started with a big boost with the news that Lee Trundle had signed a one year deal at the club - preferring to move to the Swans ahead of second division clubs. There was no deal at Swansea for Tony Pennock though as his situation developed into a row with both parties critical of each other. The club were fined £11,000 - £7,000 immediately and £4,000 suspended for trouble at the Vetch at the end of the previous season whilst Brian Murphy was signed on trial as back up to Roger Freestone. Pre-season started with a comfortable 6-0 win at Port Talbot - debutants Lee Trundle and Andy Robinson grabbing two goals each. There was anger though as the second game against Bath City was called off at short notice. The Bradford City centenary tournament saw the Swans finish in third place - losing 2-0 to Aberdeen before thrashing Coleraine 4-1. The month finished with Brian Flynn taking his players to Holland, Trundle, Thomas and Connolly all on target in their opening 3-0 victory.

August

Pre-season ended with a comfortable 4-0 win at Llanelli - James Thomas on the mark with a hat-trick whilst Kieron Durkan and Karl Connolly were the last two signings pre-season as the clock ticked towards kick-off on August 9th. The Swans started well too - with Brad Maylett grabbing a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Bury at the Vetch - Lee Trundle marking his league debut for the Swans with a goal as well.

A flattering scoreline for Bristol City was achieved in the Carling Cup with the Swans going down 4-1 after extra time but they made it two league wins from two against Cheltenham when they staged a remarkable comeback from 3-1 down to win 4-3 - Lee Trundle becoming the third Swansea player in successive matches to notch a hat-trick. Trundle again was on target as they made it three wins from three against Boston - Robinson and Nugent scoring the others - a game that was marred by an injury to Roberto Martinez. The winning start though was blown away in the last five minutes at Oxford on Bank Holiday Monday as the Swans conceded three in that period whilst the month ended with a 4-1 defeat of Mansfield at the Vetch leaving the Swans top of the table after the first month of the season.

Away from the club, a verdict of accidental death was recorded on Swans fan Terry Coles who was trampled to death by a police horse at Rotherham in May 2000.

September

September started with Brian Flynn being named manager of the month for August - a complete turnaround with his side being bottom and top of the division during the year so far. They were brought down to earth a little bit by league new boys Yeovil who were much stronger than the Swans in a 2-0 victory on a bad day for Swans fans - Wales crashing 4-0 in Milan later that same night. However, Lee Trundle was back on form with 2 goals in a 2-2 draw at Scunthorpe - a game that saw izzy Iriekpen see red. The Swans though returned to winning ways with a comfortable 3-0 win against Macclesfield at the Vetch - the first of two home games inside 4 days. Leon Britton and Richard Duffy had reason to celebrate with their first goals for the club - Leon's on his 21st Birthday - whilst Andy Robinson grabbed the second. Huddersfield visited four days later and lost 2 goals and 2 men as they slipped to defeat - Trundle and Nugent on target. Bottom club Carlisle were then beaten - Trundle and Wilson the scorers before the Swans lost the top of the table clash on the 30th 1-0 against Hull to end the month in second place.

Away from the pitch the Evening Post reported the the Swans were employing bouncers on the North Bank for crowd control - a claim hotly denied by the club.
