QPR slump to dead last after Pompey implosion – Report
at 11:31:45

I notice in the post-match comments from Marti he (rightly) assumes the blame for starting Fox, a player that had only just come back from injury and was (as it proved) not quite there to do his job. It was a gamble aimed at protecting JCS, allowing him to start against Coventry, but it did not work. However, we must also look at how the midfield failed to defend adequately and failed to get most 'second balls' as Nardi went long. Without dominance (or at least parity) in the midfield you are asking for repeated onslaughts - and that is what we got!

Sluggish start for Hatters on Championship return - Oppo profile
at 19:22:16

Neither side will be keen to meet twice in a week, with neither wanting to demonstrate on the pitch how they will set up and play. Then there is the big question of how many from the usual Starting XI you rest for a cup match. Too many Dev players and the fans are howling, but equally will be mad if a key player gets injured or is tired for the second fixture. Who would be a manager!

I hear you’re a set piece team now father – Analysis
at 10:08:10

Nice one Dan!
I think it is worth pointing out that Marti's primary objective was to stop the goals leaking at the back. Once that was done he moved onto getting the squad to play in the same way. So, that means he has really not devoted that much time to improving the attacking, but he has indeed done a lot with our dead-ball plays. Now I expect the focus to be upon attack-play, and set plays will be frequently reviewed and refined I expect.

Prestige performance puts QPR back in the hunt - Report
at 14:51:05

I was impressed with Jimmy Dunne's performance at RB too. It just shows what a professional player can achieve after weeks of doing well in training but not getting picked. Is he now the alternate to Cannon at RB in Marti's eyes? I also feel Chair deserved the MotM award, but was delighted that JCS, Willock or Hayden could stake a claim to that accolade too. Onwards to the Millers!

New boys inspire QPR’s first win at Blackburn for 25 years – Report
at 21:10:12

Great report Saffa, especially liked the bit about the stickers - very inventive of them! I think I am right that at the end of 90+10 Chair was too exhausted to even join in the celebrations. He gave his all and is an example to others in the squad. Now let's do it all again on Saturday by knocking the Canaries off their perch!

Surprise reinforcements lead QPR to Blackburn – Preview
at 12:29:38

I agree with your prediction of a 1-1 draw Dave, so that probably ensures it fails... The new arrivals are largely in midfield (1 x DM & 2 x AM (if Andersen joins too)), but much rests on the shoulders of Frey! There is little point in getting up to the final third and squandering chances, whether through inexperience or just poor finishing. Michael Frey will have a lot resting on his shoulders!

Light at the end of the tunnel, or a train coming towards us? – Analysis
at 12:24:07

A really informative article Andrew - and timely from my perspective. Most of this we, as observers, have noted; but it is very good to see it confirmed in these well presented stats. Finding out we are better in attack in games where we had less possession was a revelation though! It is also noticeable that we are using more targeted long balls now to catch opponents unprepared. Perhaps Cifuentes has realised this too...? The priority was indeed the defence, and hopefully currently the dead-ball scenarios and attacking in the final third. We all know we are better than 23rd but that elevation does not happen because of merit - we do need to get scoring more goals and fast!

A Ben Pearson own goal – Report
at 11:01:37

Thanks Clive! Loved the 'we’re cursed with a sports media that can’t see beyond the end of its six-club micro-penis ' - so true and especially in the 'London' papers!! El Tel was a great player and even better manager for us. Huge respect.
Do please try to be kinder though to Alex Neil as he obviously struggles to see the game through his rose-tinted spectacles....
This win is either a bump on the road to a relegation battle or the start of a long awaited recovery. I think the latter, but whatever happens we are playing GREAT football.

End of Term Report 22/23 — Goalkeepers
at 17:00:43

Because he was ever-present (unlike too many) and because he had to endure a dire defence at times, I feel your grading is harsh. I think others are more correct in placing him third best behind Illias & Sam - although Dykes was as good as him I feel....

Out of possession evolution under Ainsworth — Analysis
at 13:18:55

Really interesting read Dan - many thanks! Like every other fan, I suspect, I am interested/concerned as to our style of play next season, and whether Ainsworth is able to recruit the right players for his vision to materialise. I still do not see how Chris Martin adds to any vision that GA may have though. He is not able to chase balls back like Lowe or Dykes and offers a limited threat (or even presence) up front. Am I missing something?

Thanks for the report Clive. Have to feel for Drewe and I hope his confidence is not shot now. it was asking a lot for him to defend against the league leaders and their PL-quality crew! What is going on behind the scenes with Laird for him not to start...!? Onwards and upwards!!

Many thanks Simon for making a subject that is sometimes difficult to follow so easy to read! The final paragraph is the one to remember until the start of the next season, because so many decisions made will be because of it! Having said that, we are certainly not alone in this quandary and it will be interesting to see which other clubs have their hands out for the ruler.....

Ainsworth's homecoming barely moves the needle - Report
at 13:46:19

I am not a huge fan of Kakay but (like everyone around me and on the long train home) I found myself nominating him for MotM. It comes to something when you do that for someone who was at fault for their first goal [stay in empty space, forget about the ball-player about to cross...]! The consensus was that we have such a low confidence level that every setback becomes a disaster, and we should not just focus upon the dire defending - the attempts on goal are ridiculously low. Time for 3-5-2 perhaps...?

Second half slump incurs Warbs’ wrath — Report
at 19:48:38

I arrived full of hope, that a goal from Gray helped bolster. Then there was a blatant foul on Dickie that had (sadly) our whole defence stood still protesting but, even sadder, the ref could not see it from the post code he was in. That goal changed the game. It gave Cardiff heart and resulted in a superbly taken free kick. Yes we looked tired and no we should not have been showboating to cries of 'Ole!'. I watched through hands over my eyes in case the gods were also watching, and they were! Cardiff made two effective substitutions at 56 mins but MW then DELAYED ours until the 81st minute? If they were jaded or not doing what he asked - why not make changes early? I left depressed...

That Lloyd Doyley match report again — Report
at 16:27:27

Thanks Clive!
Playing two strikers up front removes one from somewhere else in the team and only makes sense if you have two strikers who are going to dominate and score. We have strikers who too often cannot even control the ball - let alone shoot on target! In our current circumstances I feel Mr Warburton would be better served going for no out-and-out striker and using Amos instead [3-4-3]. It works for Man City!

The view from the Pu — January
at 12:41:33

Four matches produced 3 wins and a draw. We cannot grumble, and we should always keep in mind that QPR is not one of the sides having points deducted for FFP misdemeanours or one that has been created from PL money (or worse). The club has built a great side with little money , and they deserve the credit for us being in the realm of the Play Offs.

The view from the Pu - October
at 12:49:22

October was when we saw the team regulars looking tired and, because of that, making mistakes with passes and finding spaces. It was also a month where clubs decided our 'make-do' wing backs were there for the taking. Initially Odubajo (moved to LWB) struggled, but he grew better as the month progresses. Adomah seemed to have less problems but he too was looking really good in the last couple of matches. Our problems are well known though, and they are not the wing-backs - they are slow to turn CBs and misfiring strikers! If we are going to play possession-based, attacking football we will leave ourselves exposed at times, so we rely upon scoring goals.

I am not sure whether it is easier to write about a bad performance or a good one, but I can say I have enjoyed all of your reports Clive! This was definitely a season of building, honing the ex-development players and putting 'round pegs in round holes'. Next season its the European Cup!!
