The 2003 escape documentary
at 08:35 4 May 2023

I thought it was an excellent documentary. Some of the interviews brought the memories back. I found it quite amusing that I wasn't the only one thinking "what are you doing?" when James Thomas decided to shoot early instead of take it on further. Never been more happy to be proven wrong!

I also had my doubts about Flynn. Don't get me wrong, I will be forever grateful for the job that was done to get us out of that mess, but I think there was more to it than Flynn pulling off a miracle.

Probably his best contribution was insisting on bringing Reeves with him. It was well known that he had an excellent eye for emerging players, and that was clearly the reason why Flynn wouldn't do the job without him. The quality of signings is what saved us that season, and for that we have Reeves to thank.

In the following season I remember Flynn making some very questionable tactical decisions. Anyone remember the lopsided formation that involved two strikers and one winger? We never had any ball-winners in the side and lacked any real spine.

I remember Kenny Jackett came in and had quite an easy time improving things. Hard to believe that putting KOL in midfield could cause such an improvement in the balance of the team.

In short, Flynn as a manager without Reeves's assistance would have been a disaster in my view.

That's it. I was pretty certain it was them.

I remember the sight of Dudley Lewis in that kit being pretty horrendous!

This reminds me of a game being called off half time at the Vetch back in the late eighties/early nineties for floodlight failure.

I think we were one nil down at the time. I remember the fanzine of the time had an illustration of Doug Sharpe pulling the plug with a big grin on his face.

Does anyone remember the game. Or the fanzine? I think it was Jackmail. There's a chance I have it in the attic. I'll have a look when it's not Saturday night!

Swansea v Cardiff - biggest club debate
at 22:07 14 Dec 2022

I'd say that the debate over who is the biggest club in South Wales is probably an extremely pointless one. A bit like two bald men fighting over a comb!

If we're to be fair and objective then Cardiff may have a slight advantage. They have a bigger stadium, a better history and a bigger fanbase. But the differences are so small that it's barely worth arguing over.

As for the stadium; it only really matters if they can fill it. Which they can't. Far from it. Cardiff are one of a few clubs who have a stadium that's embarrassingly big for their fanbase. Just like Wigan and MK Dons. If both clubs became Premier League regulars then the difference in income would be tiny compared to TV money etc. Outside the Prem it doesn't really matter. Cardiff currently have an average attendance that is roughly 1,500 better than ours. Barely enough to cover the extortionate interest rates that their owners are charging them for loans!

History doesn't mean much. It just proves how big a club used to be. Cardiff used to be a big club in the 20s and 50s. Blackpool had the first ever Ballon D'or winner in the 50s. Does that make them a big club now? Of course not! Bury won the FA Cup twice two decades before Cardiff did, yet I don't think anyone alive today has ever considered them to be in any way big.

As for things that matter, more arguments work in our favour.

Modern history is well and truly in our favour. I watched my first Swans game in 1981. I've seen the Swans play nine seasons in the top flight. I've seen us win a major trophy and I've seen us beat the best clubs in the country, and some in Europe, so many times I can barely remember who we've beat and who we haven't. Although I've seen us beat all of the best in this country!

A Cardiff fan my age will have seen two relegation seasons in the top flight and no major trophies.

Would I swap histories if I could?

Only if I preferred history books and grainy Pathe News footage over real life experience!

Very well said, Keith.

There's only one good Swans site nowadays, and you're doing a great job of running it.

It's quite amusing that the other sites only get any worthwhile activity when they're bad-mouthing this place. Envy and bitterness are terrible things!

Bristol City
at 13:58 2 Jun 2022

A city the size of Bristol, with a surrounding area that has no big clubs nearby, should be achieving so much more. It just goes to show that a big local population is no guarantee of success. It helps, but it certainly doesn't give a club any sort of worthwhile big club status.

There's another club not so far away whose fans probably need to understand that!

I'm well into my 40s, yet I'm still too young to have witnessed either of the Bristol clubs or Cardiff do anything that is any kind of display of big club status.

Some cities are just not very football orientated.

I remember the days when Cardiff fans and their owner were talking about the need for a 60,000 capacity stadium. And for it to be expandable!

Will Smith attacks host on stage
at 18:07 28 Mar 2022

I thought it was staged when I first saw it this morning. Mainly because only a couple of days ago I'd heard that the viewing figures for the Oscars had halved in recent years. Probably down to the woke nature of the event! It looked like it was staged to get people talking about it again.

Having seen the video and learned a bit more about Mrs Smith, it does look like he's a bit hen-pecked and could do with growing some balls! And his bitch slap was pretty pathetic!

More like G.I. Joan Collins!

I enjoyed reading that. Even if I was often sighing at the thought of what could be if we signed some wingers and went back to playing something like the Martinez/Rodgers/Laudrup way.

I remember a lot of posters on here back then saying something along the lines of 'the squad as a whole was stronger than the sum of its parts'. Which was absolutely true. We had a system that made almost all of the players better than they had been elsewhere.

I'd say we're the opposite now. We're heavily reliant on the likes of Paterson, Piroe and Obafemi to make something happen out of nothing. I don't think we score too many goals that are the result of the system working.

I remember reading Robin Friday's biography. I can't think of anyone who can come close to him as far as self-destructing is concerned!

Just had a quick look on his Wikipedia page. He once kicked Mark Lawrenson in the face during a game. He wasn't all bad then!

I'd love to see us play like we did under Martinez, Rodgers and Laudrup. Natural width is the big difference between those teams and what we've got now. Making the pitch as wide as possible to aide a passing game.

Nowadays we try to play through teams. It works nicely a lot of the time and often looks great. The big downside is that we tend to gift our opponents a goal or two a game.

I suppose it depends how much patience you have with that way of playing really.

I've supported the club for six years less than you, which means I've seen almost as much lower division football.

I definitely don't feel any sense of entitlement to be in the top two divisions, but, with all things considered, I think it's where we're set up to be. We have a squad of very good Championship players, and with the right manager we could definitely push on to be closer to the play-offs than we are now.

Criticism of the manager is always justified if fans think he's not doing as well as he could with what he's been given.

I don't think he is at the moment. Hope that changes.

If I posted more often on here I'd be known as a happy clapper. The type of fan who sees the positives more than the negatives. I loved the idea of someone like Martin taking over. Any type of passing football will do me.

I'm just not seeing it nowadays though. We're almost guaranteed to gift our opponents a goal every game. We're easy to defend against most of the time. We play a style of suicide football that (most of the time) only works against inferior opposition.

I really hope I'm wrong and someone bumps this thread in a few months time and makes me look like a right tit.

Can't see it though.

I suppose it depends on the level of public outrage.

There was a huge amount of it for the poor kid in Llanelli.

How much was there for the 31 year old pedestrian?

Bristol and Liverpool are two cities with similar populations. As far as football goes, Bristol has the advantage of not having any big clubs anywhere near it. Both two club cities.

So why do the Liverpool clubs do so much better?

No idea! All I know is that population is an advantage, but in no way a right to be bigger like Cardiff fans seem to think. You could probably point out that Liverpool is a football mad city. Bristol and Cardiff aren't.

Anyway, I'm happy for Cardiff fans to carry on believing they're huge. Can you imagine how boring it would be if our closest rivals were really sensible and modest? If they happily acknowledged that they were a small to medium sized club that only got out of the lower divisions because a guy with more money than sense made a huge mistake. And then an even richer guy made the same mistake only to plunge the club into even more dangerous debt!

It would be boring!

Nah, let them eat low quality. overpriced cake I say!

It was hilarious watching them debate whether the likes of Steve Bruce, Eddie Howe, Chris Wilder etc were good enough for them. It was like me trying to decide if it was worth letting Rachel Riley come over my house to give me a foot massage!

His site can be good fun to read for comedy reasons from time to time.

One thread that gave me a good chuckle was the one where he insisted that Cardiff are a MUCH BIGGER club than Middlesbrough!

It was pointed out to him that Boro have had over 60 top flight seasons. But apparently that's only because Boro have over-achieved and Cardiff have under-achieved!

I'd love to know what's in his medicine cabinet!

New Cardiff City stand in manager as deluded as the rest of them
at 22:38 27 Oct 2021

I understand that we can all be a bit biased when it comes to the 'big club' debate. Maybe I am without realising it.

But can anyone name a genuinely big club that has had just two top flight seasons in the last sixty years? Or even a decent sized club for that matter.

They're a small club that have been fortunate enough to have wealthy owners with more money than sense for the last two decades. Without that money they would have never got out of the lower divisions.

With Hammam doing his best to get his money back and Tan doing everything possible to limit his losses I'm expecting a lot of fun watching those chickens come home to roost!

Hardly any fires nowadays. Firefighter is the most overrated and overpaid job in the country.

I think you misunderstood the question.

How does getting down on one knee end racism?

It doesn't seem to be working so far.

How does taking the knee end racism?

I don't understand what these gestures do. Just like the pre-match handshake. What does that do for fair play? Has it done anything at all? Do players not foul, dive, exaggerate injuries and cheat in general because of this pointless gesture?

It does nothing but keep the virtue signallers happy.
