Cardiff City v Swansea City : Matchday Thread 22/23 UPDATED *
at 17:20 1 Apr 2023

Well, I'll be honest, I did not see that coming at 2-2...

Has there ever been a period in the history of the fixture where one team has so conclusively had the number of the other? 18-3 aggregate score in recent games now and of course the Doube Doube.

Cardiff players look like they've seen a ghost every time they play us, maybe it's the white shirts

Swansea City v Rotherham United : MATCHDAY Matchday Thread 2022/23
at 00:22 28 Feb 2023

Haven't posted in a while because to be honest I've just been so jaded by it all, but wanted to share a few observations...

Rotherham were absolutely awful but fully deserving of a point, and arguably should've nicked all 3. As soon as they flashed the stat that Rotherham haven't won a single point after going behind away from home all season you just knew they'd take something from the game- it's the Swansea way to help opposition teams/players break their ducks.

Whoever picked the game for Sky must be a sadist because I sincerely doubt any neutral sat through all 90+5 minutes of that.

Lati, god bless him, tries but should be nowhere near a championship team. In fact all three central defenders looked comically uncomfortable on the ball at times.

The team's confidence is completely shot. You just can't play the way RM tries to when that's the case. Doesn't work, end of story.

Swansea City must be one of the few teams to concede to a player sat on his backside six yards out. Comical defending all round, especially from Manning who perhaps understandably is planning his exit from the creeping sense of inevitable doom pervading the club. Good ball for our goal though.

Cooper tried but was uncharacteristically poor, looked like a boy playing against men, and should have been hooked.

Joey just looks past it to be honest. Sadly.

We are a significantly better team with Benda in goal, and once it was confirmed he was out for the season and we didn't sign proper competition for Fisher I knew we'd struggle for the remainder.

And yet, for all of the above, I just can't help but think things might (might) look quite a bit different if we didn't go down to 10 and subsequently capitulate at home to Birmingham. That and the Window debacle was the sucker punch that did for us, but even then it would still only have papered over obvious cracks.

I don't think there's a way forward from here under RM. In truth many of us have known this for some time, but he's had an uncanny ability to pull out a string of results when under pressure in the past to keep the faintest flicker of hope alive. Almost impossible to see how that happens now, especially with our fixture list.

I'm all for giving managers time, but unless we seriously invest in both players and coaching staff (set piece coach no.1 priority) this style won't work. We know that won't happen, so why waste everyone's time? I remember a few months ago one of the pundits on the Guardian Football Weekly Podcast called us a 'Poundshop Ajax'. At the time I was offended, but in hindsight he was spot on. You can't play Champagne football unless you are prepared to pay Champagne prices for the right players, which we evidently aren't. The squad is good enough for this level (if far from perfect), but not when they're directed to play like they are. That's not to say it's impossible to play passing football at this level on a budget- we've done it before- but this particular brand is asking too much of what is a limited squad.

Might it have worked out in different circumstances? Possibly. The board hasn't helped. But then I remember Martin went out and spent actual money on Andy Fisher and lose practically all sympathy for him. That has to have been his move, as was signing Darling. Whatever you think of Darling as a player, spending 1.5m on him and sitting him on the bench half the time isn't a good look.

All in all, it's just a bit depressing, especially as I'm not sure even sure sacking RM will actually achieve anything. We're going to limp over the finish line whether we do it with or without the Vegan Wenger. Confidence is shot to pieces, and sacking a manager who by all accounts is quite popular with the players probably isn't going to do wonders for that. And who comes in?

And yet, despite it all, I'll be at Kenilworth Road on Saturday. Mostly to tick it off the list, but I'll support the team and hope for a miracle.

Middlesbrough v Swansea City : Matchday Thread 22/23 UPDATED FRIDAY
at 15:50 27 Aug 2022

I've been patient with Martin, but this is starting to suck the life out of me now. It'd almost be comical if I didn't care so much. It's just so painfully predictable. We are comically bad at the basics.

In fact, it's almost better this way around, since you don't get your hopes up. If we had by some miracle managed to go a goal or 2 ahead today, you just know we would've found some way to bottle the game- just like I knew we were going to bottle Milwall, and Oxford, and Bournemouth, and Reading, and...

Great result, well done boys. Still questions to be asked but should kill the Martin out talk for a few days. Hope we can build on it.

If the swans did get relegated ?
at 23:44 6 Aug 2022

Absolutely not. There is some absolute dross in this division, and there is no excuse for not finishing above at least 3 of them.

If we were to be relegated I'd hope we were shot of him long before it happened, even flirting with it should see him gone. And I say that as someone who remains, in a broad sense, pro Martin.

Swansea City v Blackburn Rovers : Matchday Thread : SATURDAY !
at 17:09 6 Aug 2022

I couldn't watch the game and I certainly think Martin out talk is premature, but it's clear we don't have the players for the system. We play a system that relies heavily on wingbacks to create chances, and don't have any decent ones.

I'd normally say that Martin needs to acknowledge this and change the system, but what worries is me that we don't have the players for any other system either. The squad is practically devoid of any pacey, skillful players who run at defenders and can beat a man.

If Martin was serious about changing the system to 4 at the back this year, the first priority aside from strengthening at centre half should have been signing some proper wingers. We haven't (yet).

Oh to play 4-2-3-1 again...

Areas of Wales that follow the Swans
at 12:42 5 Aug 2022

Travelling an extra hour down the road to watch inferior football in a half empty stadium will have that effect on people.

Being from Pembroke, I've been trying to work out for years who the bloke is. I only know one Cardiff fan down here and his name certainly isn't Allan. Plenty of swans though, often see kids in Swans tops. Only Cardiff tops you see are people very obviously down on holiday...

Matt Grimes
at 13:06 25 Jul 2022

Matt Grimes is a technically very decent player held back by his one real, but rather large fault- for whatever reason, he cannot or will not use his right foot unless he absolutely has to. I've lost count of the amount of times I have seen our side to side momentum crippled by his lack of confidence to spray a 20 yard ball out the advancing rwb with his right foot.

I like him in our midfield but it's clear for all to see he slows some patterns of play down (side-to side for example). On the other hand, he can speed us up at times with his range of passing.

I know we all joke about his set pieces but they're not awful- all the time. The fact he's still on set pieces most of the time is more of an indictment of us as a team than anything else.

Walsh
at 16:09 5 Jul 2022

Ruptured his achilles vs Haverfordwest last week, which means he'll be out for sometime.

It also means we won't be able to get shot of him this window like we were obviously hoping too. I still think who ever sanctioned his signing should be given the sack for giving a three year deal to a notorious sick note who spent almost the entire previous season out injured. Having said that, maybe they've already left the club.

I don't want to see too harsh on the lad as he's undoubtedly a talented player, it's just a shame he's made of glass.

Gareth Bale is not signing for Cardiff
at 17:12 25 Jun 2022

Oooh dear I do hope you didn't put that money on.

It didn't exactly take Hercule Poirot to work out he was going to go to the MLS. I've been saying it for a good 12 months.

To be honest the most surprising thing about this whole saga in my view was that he actually sat down with Steve Morison and entertained the idea of Cardiff.

Wanted to play Scotland for several reasons, not least the fact that they're a very decent side. Didn't know how they'd react with about half of their players not having played competitively in months, but they dismantled an (admittedly poor) Scotland side that for me has a better midfield than we do.

Think it'll be a tough ask to win outright on Sunday but still hopeful. Pens anyone? Not sure my heart will take it...

It genuinely astonishes me how good our 'B' team is. Our motley collection of kids and lower league players has no business competing with Poland, even if it is in the Nations league.

A joy to watch how positive we've been. We might still lose tonight but it's got me feeling positive about Sunday...

Where do you really stand ?

You might want to tell Wrexham fans that they don't clash! Should they win this Sunday they'll be in the Play-off final on the 5th to get back to the football league.

If I were a Wrexham fan I'd certainly picking Wembley over our world cup play-off, so yes, club over country for me.

Personally, though, I love supporting Wales. Given me some of my favourite footballing experiences of recent years.

But like I said, if push ever did come to shove, It'd be Swans all day long for me.

Let’s all blame Andy Fisher
at 17:58 8 May 2022

I want to like him, and there are flashes of quality there (both in terms of goalkeeping and with the ball at his feet) but I just don't think he's a good enough goalkeeper for this level.

To me he looks shot of confidence all the time. He makes poor decisions and doesn't inspire confidence in those around him.

Forest last weekend summed him up really. Couple of good stops but arguably at fault for a couple of their goals and a few heart in mouth moments besides.

I can forgive a keeper making the odd mistake playing out from the back but you've got to do the basics well, which I'm not convinced he does.

Hamer did absolutely nothing to get dropped, really. He was actually in good form (keeping us in the game away at Huddersfield) when Fisher came in.

With us in the market for a new keeper in the summer I suspect he'll drop to the bench next season.

I'm quite happy for Naughton and Fisher just to knock it about between the pair of them for the rest of the match if Forest don't want to press. Forest are the ones who need to win?

We're dangerous but how they haven't scored at least 3 is beyond me. Fisher made some great saves but still scares me.

What did the challenge on wolf look like? Other end of the pitch but looked like he won the ball then followed through...

Players we don’t need next season
at 10:01 28 Apr 2022

I note that (like me for large chunks of the season) everyone appears to have forgotten that Liam Walsh is still a Swansea City player. Admittedly he's been out on loan at Hull for a few months, where yes, you've guessed it, he isn't playing either.

If we can find someone to take him, he needs to go this summer. Unfortunately, despite his undoubted talent, the lad is a crock.

I went to check his contract length with us, thinking that perhaps we'd just offered him a 1 year deal and he wouldn't be our player next year, and was absolutely astounded to read we'd given him a THREE year deal. For a player who was out injured for almost the entirety of last season and managed just 3 games.

Absolutely bonkers.

Yes, they're in serious trouble, probably alongside their 'real rivals' Brizzle City.

They are absolutely dire and only being held afloat by loan signings at the minute. When they're gone they're in big trouble unless they recruit shrewdly.

Frankly I consider it a stain on our season that they are anywhere near us in the table. They really are that bad.

Less than 600 tickets

Something must have changed in the last couple of hours. When I looked this morning the only section showing any availability under the 'show tickets together' filter was a part of the South Lower, a 2 and a 3. Now tickets have appeared in the West and I see NU2 is available for purchase too.
