Answers on a postcard to:- Mr R Cowling, Weston Homes Comedy Stadium, Colchester.
Apart from the embarrassing scoreline against mighty Oxford City, which has been covered by others on here, why were the ticket prices so high? No more than £10 should have been charged for a match like this. Why was the South stand closed again for the sake of saving a few extra quid on staff, when it's the only stand that ever makes a noise? When is this club ever going to have it's 'own' players instead of always being stuffed full of here-today-gone-tomorrow loanees all the time? And when are we going to have a proper manager instead of the clueless clown we have now? Pathetic!!

McGreal is just another in a long line of recent managers who, quite frankly is just not up to the job. The desperate deadline day fiasco of signing 5 players, all of them 'serial loanees' not really wanted by any other clubs, just highlights how out of his depth he is. I think it's just a matter of time before this club sinks into non-league obscurity, if not this season then next or the one after, probably never to return. Depressing times indeed. |

It's a pity we won the penalty shoot-out giving us an extra point and putting us in danger of progressing to the next round of this farcical competition. Hats off to the 527 hardy souls who did bother to turn up, but the majority of fans (of all clubs) have shown time and time again that they're simply not interested in this most tin pot of tin pot competitions. I would have thought the main focus of this tournament is to try and avoid picking up yet more injuries to our already depleted squad!
However, given that I suppose clubs have no choice whether to enter the competition or not, then the club should price the tickets sensibly. £5 seems a far more reasonable price to pay for this than £10 and Cowling should also make a personal apology to the fans who were told to remain sitting in the rain (see Noah's post) and the ridiculous woman who instigated it all should be given a severe reprimand |

Well I may have got the scoreline wrong but it was still a thumping nonetheless. A team without leadership who can't score and can't defend is only going one way - down! Why the hell were so many experienced senior players allowed to leave in the summer to be replaced by inexperienced and frankly second rate youngsters, to join the inexperienced second rate youngsters we already have! We finished last season on a high but the transfer dealings in the summer have been a disaster and leaves me wondering if the management, both in the dressing room and in the boardroom, have got a clue what they're doing! |

It was a woeful game and another poor performance from the U's. It's alarming to see how much this team has gone backwards since the end of last season and from the evidence of yesterday, it looks like we're in for another relegation struggle for which we've come so accustomed over recent seasons. Happy days! |

Don't forget we thrashed Stevenage 4-0 only 4 months ago and it just goes to show how much our expectations have dipped over the summer and after that awful display at Accrington last week, that we'd all be shocked and amazed if we achieved a similar scoreline today! |

I feel sorry for the 300+ who made the long trip up there (and those who tried but didn't make it!) to witness another sorry away performance from our 'heroes'. I only listened to it on the radio (switched it off in disgust when their 3rd goal went in) but from what I heard, we were lucky to only lose 3-1. The defence sounded a shambles yet again and we were little threat up front and I suppose Eastman will now be out till Christmas to add to our ridiculous injury list.
Villa will probably give us a spanking on Tuesday and I can only hope we can get it together sufficiently to get some sort of result against Stevenage next weekend, otherwise with an almost inevitable defeat at Luton the following weekend, we'll be propping up the table by the end of the month. Thank god Yeovil are in this league!
Final thought - why the hell did we let Chris Porter go??? |

Not particularly bothered about Bonne as such, I don't think he was good enough and has probably now found his true level at National League. What I'm more concerned about is how threadbare we now are in the striker department. I know Porter had his critics but we're going to miss his hold-up play a lot this season unless we can pull our fingers out and sign someone similar in the next couple of weeks. Guthrie will probably miss the start of the season and we won't see Dickenson this side of Christmas, at the earliest. By the way, who is this Kpekwa guy, is he a striker or yet another midfielder? |

There are 2 play-off spots up for grabs and the bottom line is we HAVE to beat Yeovil, anything less than a win means we won't finish in the top 7 anyway, whatever the other teams do. So we have to start on the assumption we're going to win which means we can forget about anything the clubs below us do because they won't be able to catch us anyway (unless Wycombe beat Cambridge by at least 6 clear goals, which ain't gonna happen!) Also I think it's a fairly safe bet that Blackpool will take one of the spots with an almost certain home win against Orient (gawd bless 'em!) and their vastly superior goal difference. That leaves only Carlisle, Stevenage and Cambridge that we realistically have to worry about. Carlisle will have to win their away match at Exeter to stay ahead of us, a draw won't be good enough. That looks like a tricky match for them. Likewise Stevenage will have to win their home match against Accrington to stay ahead of us. That looks achievable on paper but they've lost form in recent weeks, so fingers crossed. That leaves Cambridge who will have to win their away game at Wycombe, a possibility but it won't be easy for them. If they do, then we will have to beat Yeovil by one goal more than Cambridge beat Wycombe to finish above them. Again, this seems do-able for us.
So it's all a bit complicated and the chances of all these results going our way is pretty remote, but I'm sure we'd have all settled for such an exciting end to the season back in November when we were second bottom and staring the National League in the face!

I'm just waiting for some joker to come on here and start banging on about how we can still make the play-offs! 3 points from the last 8 away games says it all really. If it wasn't for our half decent home record, we'd be scratching around at the bottom with Orient and Newport (and what's the betting doomed Orient will complete the double over us at the end of the month!). We're going to end up mid-table at best and all-in-all it's been another very disappointing season. At no stage did we ever look convincing play-off candidates and I fear it will be more of the same next season if changes are not made. I still think the squad we have are good enough to challenge for promotion from this division but I'm not convinced that John McGreal is the man to lead them there. His cave-man tactics of lumping the ball up to a solitary striker (especially away from home) are just not producing results and it seems it's only him and his management team that can't seem to see this. Combine this with the fact that we still can't defend properly and you have a team that's going nowhere fast! |

Totally agree with the comments about McGreal's defensive tactics and that's why I'm disappointed that Porter seems to be getting a lot of unwarranted stick from some of the fans. The guy is obviously not Premier League quality or even Championship quality, but we are playing in League 2 and he's a perfectly adequate front man at this level. The problem is the fact that he always seems to be playing on his own up front and, as basically a target man, he needs someone up there to support him. The fan who had a go at him after the game on Saturday, should have directed his frustrations at McGreal instead. |

4-0 flattered us, it should have been 6 or 7. They were far superior to us in every department. Portsmouth are no world-beaters but we made them look like it yesterday and why the hell did McGreal play Porter on his own up front! The guy did his best but he's a target man and had no-one to nod the ball on to, the few times he did manage to win it in the air.
All this talk about making the play-offs is nonsense I'm afraid, I think we'll do well to finish top half with the crippling injury list we have. This season has been a bit of a wake-up call (if last season wasn't!), the fact is we're a very average League 2 team and, unless things change, I think we're in for a lengthy stay in this division. |

This is the news I hoped wouldn't come, but I said to the guy next to me last week when Guthrie went down, 'I bet that's the last we see of him this season!' With Slater also gone along with all the other long-term injuries we've got, I think our slim play-off hopes are well and truly f*cked now. Oh well, look on the bright side, at least we've got Macauley Bonne back again now.....errr..hooray! lol |

I think the current injury crisis will put paid to any outside chance we had of making the play-offs this season. In fact, with only 5 points gained from the last 6 matches, it looks like we may be starting one of our famous slumps again. Hopefully, we've got enough points on the board to avoid being sucked into the relegation battle again (remember we were second bottom in mid November!) but you can never tell with Col U! |

I think we've all got to face up to the fact that, unless something drastic happens - like Cowling stepping down, this club will be playing National League football next season. I attended the disgrace that was the Orient match (I left when the 3rd goal went in!) but I've frankly lost interest in watching yet another relegation struggle for the rest of the season. So unless Cowling goes, I won't be attending any more matches this season and I'm sure I won't be the only one taking this stance. Up the U's, but my limit has been reached |

After the utter and shameful shambles that passed for a "performance" against Orient, I think it's pretty obvious now that Col U are heading for the National League next season, and who is brave enough (or stupid enough!) to say that the slide down the leagues won't continue even then! A properly run club would now thank John McGreal for his services and show him the door, as the guy is obviously utterly out of his depth. But as we all know, this club is far from being properly run so this ain't gonna happen and, as someone earlier said, there's no point in getting rid of him because he will just be replaced by another Cowling "yes man" from within the ranks (and Humes is probably still effectively the manager behind the scenes anyway!). The only way this club is going to arrest the slide into non-league obscurity is if Cowling sells up and gets out and, as I can't see that happening any time soon, the future looks very dark indeed |

Orient have only lost 1 away match all season, it's their abysmal home record that has let them down and I can see no reason why we'll be only the second team to inflict an away defeat on them today. If we lose again today and other results go against us, we could be sitting in the bottom 2 come tonight. It's all turning out to be depressingly similar to last season and if it ends in relegation again, then I think it's going to take a long time before Col U will be gracing the Football League again, if ever! |
