No luck and little that they tried came off. Most of them tried. Some of the younger ones, like Tim, just didn't seem to know what to do. The problem has to be a lack of confidence. Much as I like Jimmy's spirit, this is one of those rare moments when I wish we could have the other Dunne back, a Sergeant Major / Leader of Men type. Even Clive Dunne would be an upgrade in leadership terms. Little known fact. Dunne, Clive not Jimmy or Richard, might have played the old fogey, but was actually one of the youngest cast members in Dad's Army.

Very little came off the team. Thought it was one of Tims better games . Mistakes catch up with you and they did last night . Leadership and bravery is needed for this team Sam is not the right captain
Unbeilable how we have plummeted !

Is there anything left to say? There were moments when the team were positive and trying to play on the front foot. But too often they lost 50:50 challenges they should have won, were flat footed when receiving, playing the ball backwards, missing tackles and completely lacking in confidence. I thought Dunne, Chair (in spite of the penalty miss) and Kakay tried their best and were mostly positive and energetic. I thought Iroegbunam, Laird, Dickie and Lowe were especially poor.

Playing Lowe and Martin up front was probably the right thing to try but they were never going to give us energy or mobility.

The other point to make is that Sunderland are a decent team and the last 2 goals came when we were pressing forward. But Sunderland are a good team and played with pace when breaking forward. They didn't deserve to win by 3 goals, but were much the better team.

What's the answer? No idea but the various formations Critchley has tried so far haven't worked. Maybe it is time to try 3 CBs. Although our play going forward isn't great the feebleness of the defence needs to be the priority. That and the psychology that Les told Clive the club are addressing.

I don't like to criticise Critchley but it's hard to argue that he's getting much right and he doesn't seem to be motivating the players. Maybe we just need that lucky, scrappy win. 😭

Although intensely frustrating I did at least feel the effort was there, we were the better side for first 25mins and came out of the second half and gave it a really good go. I’ve been really upset with some of the performances (Hull and Fleetwood to name two) this was clearly better although ultimately a results game.

Had the keeper not kept his foot out for the penalty could have been a very different result.
