I'm trying to find out the first name of Wood, a player from the team of 1919-20 16:42 - Mar 28 with 998 viewshappyguy

Hi everyone,

I was wondering whether there is anybody out there who can help me.

I am trying to find out the first name of a player who played for Rochdale during the 1919-20 season, the first season that football resumed after World War 1.

He was a full back and he played the vast majority of matches that season when Rochdale were in the Central League.

One of these matches was an FA Cup First Round Proper tie against Arsenal, which ended in a 4-2 defeat, on January 10th 1920.

I would really appreciate if there is anyone out there who can help me. These days, information from this era is so easily accessible and everybody seems to know everything.

Thank you for your help.

I believe it was Edward, played 3 games in the FA Cup (incl. Arsenal) in season 1919-20.

Thanks very much for your reply BuckTheTrend. I really appreciate your help.

Could you please tell me the source of this information and if you know whether he had any middle names.

From a Dale history book:

Edward Wood 1919-20
Born: {Wigan JFM.1892}
Full back
Lge Apps/Gls 30/0 Total Apps/Gls 34/0
Carer: Hindley Central 4.11, Standish St. Wilfreds, Burscough Rangers, (army 6.15 to 6.19), Dale 9.19 [30/- CL], Arsenal trial 9.20, Wigan Borough 10.20

With Lingard, the only ones of the 1919 close season new signings to make a mark, he played regularly at left back before switching flanks later in the season. The following year, after a brief spell at Arsenal, he became one of the first two professionals signed by the newly formed Wigan Borough. When signing for Hindley Central back in 1911, he had been a coal hewer in a local pit, but he also missed three seasons in his early career through serious illness.

If you don't know why your posts keep getting downvoted, there's no hope for you.

Thank you very much for your help TVOS1907.

It makes sense to me that his name was Edward because he is mentioned in newspaper articles during this period as E.Wood and he has been referred to on Wikipedia as F.Wood - see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1919%E2%80%9320_Rochdale_A.F.C._season

From past experience, I've noticed that Edward is the most likely name in these circumstances because if you were called Edward during this period, it's highly plausible you were also known as Fred.

Once again, thanks very much for your amazing help. I really appreciate it!
