Does anyone know if, should the teams be level after 90 minutes, the tie goes straight to penalties or would the teams play 30 minutes extra time?
Just trying to assess travel options.

Semi final draw on Monday. Hope we can avoid a long trip south. Another league game to rearrange…not that I am complaining!

Another home draw would be ideal, as you suggest a long trip down south will not help our fixture congestion and fatigue.

Dale are No4.... would prefer to avoid Aldershot (no3) and Woking (1) and plump for Home to Spennymoor (2)......Winner pockets £15k (looser £5k) so decent loot to add to the £7500 we well deserved from today. Alty get £2k.

Games played Sat 5th April.

Let's just keep going.

Mitchell and Rodney don’t play as a partnership! Rightly or wrongly, we haven’t played a front two all season. Bird’s presence allows both Rodney and Barlow to play off him. That’s one of the reasons why the latter was man of the match. They also changed formation and had an extra midfielder after the subs in the second half.

But yes, the later part of the game illustrated the point about needing a forward who occupies defenders and brings others into the game better than Mitchell.

Now, playing Mitchell in a two with Bird could be interesting. But that would require a change in how we set up.

We played a front 2 in the first half today and it very much paid off. Rodney and Bird linked up so well. Barlow too. In the second half we reverted back to our usual formation with Bird and then Mitchell isolated as a lone forward.

I thought Gordon had his best game for a while today. Some excellent defensive work and also joined in with play going forwards with some lovely through-balls.

The Altrincham commentary team sang Gordons praise literally all game, said he was ridiculously consistent all match

Listening to McNulty’s interview, looks like we have to accept Bird won’t be featuring for 90 minutes every week yet due to his match fitness. He also noted he was “feeling a little something” when he went off, so hopefully it’s not a real problem.

He looked like he reached for his groin a couple of times as he was going off so might have tweaked something there.

I think the main differences today were Barlow looked like a game changer and drove us forward all the time. Rightly MoM imo. Rodney playing off a front man looked a completely different player, he looked interested and alert and ran at the defenders, something we haven't seen for a while.

We played the usual formation but Rodney was able to get in and around Bird because he actually held it up. This meant everyone moved further up the pitch and the distances were reduced between players. Same with East and Gilmour. Formation wise it was the same throughout, something Alty’s manager noted in his interview. It is something McNulty will still have to be more flexible with.

Crazy game, football.
Booed off the pitch seven days ago, cheered to the rafters a week later.
But that game today had everything you could ask from your team.
Guts, determination, skill, commitment.
The right team selected, more or less the right subs.
Altrincham I thought played really well today. Going what I’ve seen recently I’d back them to beat either Oldham or Halifax if they encountered them in the playoffs.
Don’t forget they could have been two up in the first five minutes.
Linney himself could have had a hattrick today.
Much is made of Waller’s phenomenal save from Newby but equally crucial was the save midway through the first half when Linney was clean through with only the keeper to beat.
And Gordon was as good as ever today. His positioning is impeccable, it’s strange to think that he was temporarily without a club when Fylde released him a little over twelve months ago.
He’s not scared to mix it either as witnessed at the end of the game!
I just worry how many are starting to carry knocks. Beckwith and Gilmour both looked leggy towards the end (the latter was tireless today) and they are two players with no direct replacement in the squad.
Off the pitch, and this is not presumptuous in any way, Andy Duff needs to be planning ahead once the draw is known for the semifinals.
I did a little bit of consultancy work for Leeds RLFC when they were used to reaching cup finals and they had full contingency plans in place for implementation as soon as the final whistle had blown on a winning semifinal.
Souvenir merchandise provisionally ordered, ticket details and arrangements in place, hospitality packages in place, coaches booked, all to be announced on the same day.
I’m sure that the likes of Crown Oil, Castleton Timber and JW Lees not to mention the Ogden Trust could be tempted to entertain at Wembley. Executive coach travel, exclusive seats and hospitality for perhaps £400 per head? Milk every available commercial opportunity because this sort of occasion doesn’t happen regularly.
Today has rejuvenated the season, I just hope we don’t run out of steam.
The last couple of playoff places are still up for grabs and knows what may happen then?

On the tiredness issue which was apparent, a midfielder is required more than ever. At some point we should look at resting a defender too. It’s not something you’d normally do, but Ferguson and Kingdon shouldn’t only play because someone else gets injured for weeks.

Praying Bird is ok, but his display has shown McNulty that we need that type of forward for the long term. Not that it was ever a doubt, but the results literally prove it now.

Spot on. A proper team performance today, Barlow was fantastic and Bird also reminded me of COG. It's the inconsistency of performances that cause the frustration and we beat a very decent Altrincham team today by playing with some tempo and not playing walking football in our own half.

The commentary team also made the COG comparison. They hoped Bird would reach 50% of the level of him, which would be pretty good at this level. I am still not confident that we will make the playoffs, or if we did have the ability to go up, so this cup is really our season saver. Good comment about being prepared now in case we win the semi for a ramp up in money making opportunities, marketing etc. You assume it is being done !!

For me the biggest plus to come out of the game is that Alty know we are not push overs for the forth coming league fixtures. Equally, our boys should be confident of at least 3 points from the 2 fixtures if not more. All this assuming Bird is fit enough to play a major part.

YOU do not have the right to give someone else permission to tell me what I can and can't do.

McNultys post match interview worried me with nine weeks of the season left. He mentioned players collapsing on the pitch and how tired they were. He sounded like a man who didn't believe we can reach the play offs or beat Gateshead on Tuesday night. That's only my perception, others might listen and disagree.

He mentions the pitch and the upcoming fixtures and there's no positives to take from his comments. He also mentions his data analysis in a positive way and suggests everything is on track. We have picked up 4 points from the last available 18 in the league, thats relegation form, he doesnt mention that. I'd also suggest that Fitness shouldn't be a issue with so much of the season still left to play surely? It's not good when you hear your manager speaking like that and I'm now of the mind that we will drift away in the league but hopefully have a visit to Wembley as a consolation. How do the part time teams cope?

Didn't go yesterday as I had another event that I chose to attend instead but pleasantly surprised with the result and what sounds like the performance.

A tough run of league fixtures ahead of us now before we can look forward to a semi final!

Agreed.

I found the comments unnecessary..we all know what the fixture list/pitch issues etc are..Jim would be better to say nothing at all…sets the wrong tone for what’s to come

Basically turning his players into some kind of "victims of circumstance", typical of the way things are approached in recent times

It's a mentality that needs to change if Dale are to get back.into the EFL, which continues to beg the question of where it arises, despite yesterday's pleasing result

Agree, there's always a reason for why we can't compete or achieve. A excuse for not being able to do something. Both on and off the pitch...even banging a drum. Why all of a sudden are our players anymore knackered than players from clubs we are competing against? We have a very competitive squad and for all my misgivings about Simon Gauge I'm pretty sure he's made sure that McNulty has been backed. There is still over two months of the season left to play, more if we win our next trophy game..if the players are collapsing and tired now then God help us for the remainder of the season. Not many managers would give the players a ready made excuses to under perform but that's what McNulty does in his interview, he doesnt think they should be criticised for it. We're a professional football club and we live or die on football results, that should always be the priority for everybody, especially the manager.

I’m not so sure after seeing a couple of post match interviews with the Altrincham manager.
He says he’s very disappointed as they were fully aware that Rochdale play to a “rigid system which they seldom deviate from” and he prepped his team accordingly.
In particular he singled out that he had warned his defenders about the threat down the right from Gordon and TAR.
You can bet that he’ll be reinforcing that message before the league games.

It is to 'manage supporters' expectations' and take the pressure off the players. Manager interviews have to been seen for what they are. No manager who is constantly having a go at his players in pupil will last very long. The public and private personas of a manager could well be different and whilst Jim appears to be a 'players coach' I suspect he will have given some bollockings but these remain private.

We will never get anything different. Even after an awful performance, in public it will be pitch, tired, young squad, injuries, other team are really good etc behind closed doors there will be fewer excuses.

Whilst we might have said the forthcoming run of fixtures provides an ideal opportuntity. There is a potential Wembly appearance, key games in which players who might not have had much game time can show their worth and players can put in performances that earn new contracts and maybe even the club promotion. Let's embrace it, enjoy the ride and see where it takes us.

Good professional performance yesterday from the whole team. We must, must go again with the same intensity again against Gateshead. If there is a sniff of playing a competing game at Wembley that should be enough to motivate the players to find depths of stamina game in game out. The only player who seems to be underperforming against his usual standard is Beckwith, who to be fair has dance virtually every dance this season.

Nice to see some decent refereeing too, a great advantage played for a clear foul for us in midfield in the build up to the second goal I think it was, they get hammered too often but credit where its due a great decision to let play develop
