One of the things I did learn last night which I didn't know is that guide dogs have a set retirement age. He said his pooch is "coming to the end of her working life" so he needs another one. What happens to them then? Are they like greyhounds you can rescue?

Guide dogs are trained as puppies and spend most of their lives assisting.
They do a magnificent job and Iām sure they are all re-homed to spend their final years just doing fun dog things without any further responsibilities. They deserve it, bless em. |  | | |

They're retained as pets or rehomed, I believe. If the former, though, how would they definitely know they'd retired? If only from force of habit, wouldn't they be following their owner out to cross the road from time to time.

Back in the 60's Guide Dogs were talked about a lot and although I didn't learn too much at school I did learn about Guide Dogs and their training & how important they are to blind people. It was the 'in' thing back then.. | | | |

There's a Guide Dog centre in our neighbourhood and I see the handlers out training them every day. They're amazing dogs, and amazing people. I have no idea how they do it. They are patient and loyal and help their buddies across the road and around obstacles and they never get distracted while all the other dogs are gallivanting and careering around the park, having the time of their lives.
It's incredible training, and it takes incredible dogs for it to work. | |

Guide Dogs do not ALWAYS go to be rehomed. My sister is fortunate enough to have a guide dog (her second one). She kept her old one when he was retired and in fact after recent ill health her first dog has only just passed away. The guide dogs society fully funded all his treatment till he passed. |  | | |
